 | | I have been using MSN Messenger chat protocol for years, and I have to admit, I find SabreMSN really great. Unfortunately, it seems that in the early months of 2013 Microsoft will ditch Messenger and force everyone to use Skype. Not that I don't like Skype, but I prefer something which is *JUST* for chat. First of all, which are the 'other' more common chat protocols out there?
The ones I can think of are:

Yahoo (which I personally don't know anyone that uses it, but seems to be pretty popular)
Facebook (wether some like it or not, this has totally taken over anything)
Google Chat (pretty good but not as popular as FB)
or Jabber (which lets you connect with pretty much anything with one account)

If I had to vote, or pledge for a Kickstarter, I would choose Jabber due to the fact that it can support many protocols, followed closely by Facebook (not sure FB works through Jabber, probably not).

Having said that, the problem as usual is who will write such a program :) Maybe SabrMSN's author could update the program to include more protocols? Just my twopence anyway

 | | Update:
I have done some research and found out that Facebook now supports Jabber as well, meaning that "all we need" is a Jabber compliant IM program, and we will be able to use pretty much any chat protocol we want :)

Now, someone shut up and take my money (for the bounty of course) :P

 Update 2:

Found this, not sure what it does, and if it works:

 http://os4depot.net/share/development/library/misc/libjabber.lha
Add Jabber support to your messenger app.

 Update 3:

 Found this too:

 http://jabberwocky.amigaworld.de/
 Don't know if it works.

Are you telling me that you don't know about IRC? It is a protocol which has been the standard for internet chat since the late 80's.

Well yes of course I know about IRC, I am on it right now :) - but through MSN Messenger, Gtalk, etc. I can chat with friends who do not use IRC (and most don't, I'd say none of real life friends do).

Edit: When I'm using my Sam, you can find me on #AmigaWorld of course ;)

Yes I am annoyed that MSN is getting the death nell in 2013, Jabber is no real answer for me and IRC for me like you I don't use it nor do I have friends that use it.

Unfortunately I have to use facebook chat from here on it is dreadful.

But is there a way to use FB chat without having to resort to having the site open?

Yes I hate having the website open but I don't if there is a way to not use the chat without the website, would be good though

 | | I'd love a native Facebook chat client, the website is so unreliable on OS4/MOS.
Or a proper Pidgin port which works with FB and the rest just fine.

An effort was started back in 2009, but never really progressed to useable state

 http://os4depot.net/?function=showfile&file=network/chat/pidgin.lha

Be great if someone got the sources and finished it

The APIs are open so anyone can code a client iirc, don't think anyone has so far on our platforms though.

Where did you hear this? Every source I've read suggests the servers will be migrated into Skype.

I read that in (serious) tech magazine (czech) but the discussion under the article suggest the information is false and you were right at the beginning. I am really sorry.

As a non user of IRC my choice would be to get webcam support and Skype.

At the moment when on my laptop MSN is open from boot and on my Sam440 SabreMSN is open from boot, will be sorry to see MSN go.

 | | I use Pidgin via AmiCygnix since months and I had never the slightest problem with it. At least it can handle many IM protocols.
I used Jabberwocky before for my ICQ account, but Pidgin does it better and easier.

jabberwocky can be used for any XMPP-compliant service. i use it for facebook chat, google talk, and jabber. i showed folks how to do this at amiwest this year. piece of cake.

I tried to use Jabberwocky but didn't get anywhere :(

Care to give us a step-by-step on how to setup FB chat on it :)

Also, does it support being signed in several services at one time?

 Thanks!

Read about XMPP transports. The server I use doesn't seem to have any though.

sure thing. it's amazingly easy. first you need to know your facebook ID. for example mine is 'eldee.stephens' (without the single quotes, of course). once you know that:

 1. launch jabberwocky
 2. if the login window doesn't appear on launch, select 'account' from the jabberwocky menu

 3. your jabber ID will be user@chat.facebook.com where user is your user ID
 4. your password is your normal facebook password
 5. to save this for next time, click the popup gadget next to the ID field

 6. click the 'add' button
 7. click the 'close' button
 8. click the 'connect' button

you're done. you can also click the 'save as default account' button if you want. i have jabberwocky configured to auto-connect when i launch the program, but you can configure as you like. there is amigaguide documentation included with jabberwocky, and it makes sense to review it. you can always pull it up using the 'help' key on your amigaone keyboard.

unfortunately jabberwocky can only connect to one server at a time. so if you set it up with separate facebook and google talk accounts, for example, you'll only get one or the other. the best way to use jabberwocky is in conjunction with a public jabber server with transports to your favorite services, like ICQ, AIM, gtalk, facebook, yahoo, etc. you can find a list of them using google.

i also recommend the rather poor icons included with jabberwocky with replacements from martin 'mason' merz, which can be found at os4depot, among other places. have fun, and let us know if you have any questions.
