There are several free (as in freedom), cross-plattform paint programs inspired by DPaint or Brilliance, like GrafX2. Updating these means reaching a bigger audience and thus getting help from other developers. |
GrafX2 is great but doesn't allow animation.

Most people still remember DPaint if they once owned an Amiga. Neither PPaint or Brilliance garner that mind share I'm afraid. DPaint is fun and I'm not sure PPaint's animation features work the same way or include the Light Table, 'Move' function, Scrolling Backgrounds, etc. Correct me if I'm wrong. Where are all the PPaint animations on YouTube if it's as fun to use for animating as DPaint? Last edited by BigD on 07-Dec-2017 at 11:58 PM.

Well, I don´t know how much FPU code is Tower57 using, but nearly pure FPU SPE native benchmarks under Linux (eg. lame) show only 80 % of SAM460 FPU performance.
If Daniel posted lame benchmark under current FPU emulation I would be far more assured about Tabor performance. |

Which is why I said in my post that maybe it doesn't have the features. I'm not sure of the relevance of what people remember - I guess the name might attract people, but if the software is suitable and available people will use it regardless of the name. And I stand by what I said, it would likely be far less work to add those features to PPaint than to port the entirety of DPaint away from its hardware dependencies. Besides, animation is only one aspect of these paint programs that you happen to have a focus on. Standard pixel manipulation without animation is also a big area, and one in which PPaint has long left DPaint standing, between its filters, palette handling, support for multiple formats, ARexx port, RTG support... IIRC around the time of PPaint 6 I tried it, and I don't think I've loaded up DPaint V since.Last edited by Daedalus on 08-Dec-2017 at 09:13 AM.

Really? Where are those benchmark results? Link please.

DPaint has some really nice palette manipulation features. When I ripped GFX from Ishar 2 AGA which uses unusual palette system not suited for common ripping programs, DPaint helped to understand, how this all works (sections per 16 - I think - colours for selected aspects of the game) and was the best tool for needed global/local palette changes (copy/pasty to the right place).
That being said, I use PPaint pretty much for anything else. |

Thanks. That posts does indeed show lame working slower on the P1022 than Sam460ex.... but, the P1022 came out on top in the MPlayer one...

Sure, higher integer speed and probably also better memory speed = faster MPlayer benchmark score.
Nobody disputes strong points of P1022, most of us only question FPU performance. Tower57 certainly is not that kind of benchmark that would put FPU discussion on hold. |

| What the Tower 57 benchmarks do show is that under typical usage scenarios, the FPU is not an issue even under emulation. There are not enough FPU instructions hitting the emulation code to bog the system down unless you run applications specifically designed to rely on the FPU.
If you consider the fully usable (if not great performing) FPU emulation, some programs being re-compiled to run natively on SPE, and the typical usage scenario for an entry-level system, it just isn't a deal breaker. Of course the e500mc core would have been preferable, but if you buy the A1222 specifically to encode audio/video or do 3D rendering, you're looking at the wrong system in the first place. |

What about current 3D games? The younger of us would like to play some 20 years old games with at least acceptable framerate... |

| Ok, getting back on topic - A1222 - where is it already? It was supposed to be released, or at least shown in some capacity, back in October of 2017.

It has been demoed but currently the audio and NIC drivers are not ready. Thomas Frieden is currently working on improving the FPU emulation but it wasn't implied that it was as important a factor for holding back release as the drivers. |

I wish that was possible to read. FB sticks this f'ing great SIGN IN HERE thing right over the top of what you are trying to read (and darkens the rest of the display). I can't even make the damn FB requester go away because it's not all on screen.

Nice!
I wonder about performance of classic non-SPE 3D games (like Quake 3). |
