I've got a 3Com 589 PCMCIA LAN card that I have been using fine in AmigaOS 3.1 - 3.9 and would like to report that it works fine on AmigaOS 4.0 Classic (Amiga 1200).

All that was needed was to copy over the 3c589.device to DEVS:Networks, and select it using the New Connection wizzard under SYS:Internet.

There was no need to use pccard.library

Reason why I've posted this is that someone else may have the same card as me and would like to use it,and also that it is NOT on the ACube compatability page - which I think it should now be listed on there as working :) - Can someone inform ACube of this ?

This post was done on OS4 via IBrowse using the 3C589.device :)

Cheers,

James.

@colossusuk

Mine's the AmigaKit NETPCM00X one - apparently the NetPCM003 ones do work according to the compatibility list. I've had to order a MKIII.

Hmm, that's... weird... Which version of 3c589.device are you using?

I've tried to use 3c589.device many times with OS4 Classic without success, and a quick look at the 3c589.device v1.4 sources tell me that 3c589.device should fail to open if pccard.library can't be found.

Tried it again, with v1.3 of 3c589.device. Without pccard.library it just refused to open, and with pccard.library OS4 froze. Maybe I should try blacklisting it...

There's a 1.4 out too, perhaps that one works better?

@AmiDog

Right, got back on my Amiga again and did a 'version 3c589.device'.

It reported that I am using version 1.4 - I'm pretty sure this is same version on Aminet?

Anyhow - make sure that you perform a manual configuration, and when you select the 3c589.device file do NOT click on the 'Test device Configuration' button - just select it then click on OK. It should now work fine.

Make sure you do not use the pccard.library as when I tried it, OS4 crashed!

Without pccard.library the card is working fine, maybe theres some kind of pccard.library emulation or PPC native library that it uses instead?

Cheers,

James.

Had huge probs with this. Tried the 1.4 from Aminet, crashed as soon as device was chosen. Then, could not delete it! Lock-up occurred, needed reboot. Tried moving to trashcan, nothing. Then memory leak! Goes all the way down to negative figures! Needed re-installation of WB.

A1200T, PPC 175, 3Com 3CCE589ET on PCMCIA, IDEfix 97 with 3.5" HD and DVD-RW, not much else really.

@lurkist

Only difference with mine is that I have a 240 PPC and a 3CCE589EC card. Everything else is the same as yours inc IDE-FIX

Maybe let OS4 bootup, plug the network card in and then run thru the wizzard?

Just a suggestion really; all I know is that I havent had any problems - maybe your card is slightly different to mine?

Did as you said, and I get:

"AddNetInterface: Could not add interface 3c589 (I/O-error)"

and

"Could not open 3c589.device unit 0"

@fryguy

I tried v1.4 first, but figured I should try the older v1.3 too, but it crashes as well.

Forgot to say, I have the hardware PCMCIA fix installed as well (pretty important thing to miss!) although I can't see this being the issue as it has worked for years on my 3.9 setup (although, different accelerator).

Oki. Hopefully the author (or someone else) can make a fixed OS4 version.

@AmiDog

Fair enough, I dont have any PCMCIA fixes on both my A1200's, I have to turn them on, insert card and then reset them for them to work.

Lets hope the author or some other developer can update the sources to work with OS4.

Maybe I'm just lucky lol.
