Hi,

Could someone tell me the power requirements of the SAM and how much power is needed when SAM is fully loaded please?

SAM board
PCI card (graphics or other)
1 DVD-RW
1 or 2 SATA 3.5" hard disks?

Total consumption?

I need to know for my SAM case I am working on.

Anyone with a SAM?

Thinking about it...it would really help to have one...

Thank you.

@TheDaddy

Without actually measuring the power consumption, I couldn't say what mine uses. I have a slot loading Panasonic DVD rewriter drive, a Hitachi 2.5" HD and the Sam board all running from a 120W PicoPSU with no problems.

Here, I have tested with a 5''1/4 DVD RW and a 500Go hard disk with a 90W Pico PSU.
The hard disk takes one or 2 seconds more to initialize itself, but it seems to work (no PCI card at the same time).

See you later ;)

@TheDaddy

You will probably never go above 80W whatever you install..
Graphics cards being the only power hog here..
So having a good PSU with +100W will secure there won't be any problems
currently or in the future.
Also note that while PSU's get older they will give less power so buying
a slightly bigger than calculated is not such a bad idea. Maybe 140-150W!?

@TheDaddy

Are you going to make another a little bit bigger case for Sam-flex too ? Or are you making it big enough to fit them both models ? Could you make room enough for two 3.5" HD's ?

@all
So it's picoPSU and a power adapter which are used with these ITX mobos. (I had forgotten that.)

Good questions...

>>Are you going to make another a little bit bigger case for Sam-flex too ? Or are you making it big enough to fit them both models ? Could you make room enough for two 3.5" HD's ?

I will need both boards first, I need to find a way to put my hands on them.
Two HDs is possible.

May I ask what would your preferred case style be? Just to have an idea.

Tower/desktop

or

Wedge style (Amiga 500 etc...)

Thank you

I have always wanted an A1000 style desktop case.
The Commodore128 was similar, and I wouldn't mind putting my A1 in one either.

With the Sam something larger enough fit all the components in, but smaller enough to put my tft monitor on.

Come to AmiWest and take your own measurements and photos. I am sure that both boards will likely be shown there. I will have my EFIKA there as well, if you are interested in making a case design for it too.

It would be a good opportunity to show your Minimig case design to some and perhaps get a couple, or more sales.

Edit: As for which shape I prefer, that would be 36D-24-34, Red above and below, white in the middle and legs that go on forever!

The Sam website lists 10.2W at the low end with 25W playing Quake.

Anandtech recently had an article about power supplies. I believe that article listed out video card and component power draw. It may be useful for you. When you figure out the power usage you want to stay around 80% of the power supply rating. This should give you enough room for infrequent higher draw and be in the zone where the supply itself is most efficent.

I always liked that too, maybe the SAM case is going to look like that...no promises though

'Luckily' both motherboards are designed to meet standards. SAM seems to meet MiniITX where SAM FLEX meets ATX-FLEX. Also, PCI seems to be a rather well documented standard as well, where it is pretty safe to assume that the old still, full-size PCI is not something to reckon with anymore (enabling less high, less deep designs).

So, basically, you'll have to get a feature list of what you're wanting to be able to deliver.
That is, make a short list of the number of 5.25" devices (and state the number you want to be accessible from the outside), 3.5" devices (internal / external).

On top of that, you'll have to think about the PSU: Do you want an internal one (adds more heat into the case) or an external version. And while we're in dream-mode, should the case be suitable for in-car mounting?

There are loads of ways to answer all questions. The Mikronik Infinitiv, for example, was, arguably, not the most handsome case on the market but the great thing about it was that it was expandable. So, a base design could be a slim case small enough to house the SAM in a way that it would fit into a car-stereo ISO opening (would probably mean that a 4x40 Watt amplifier should be present as well). For those who want a little more (SAM Flex) the base case could be adopted to house the FLEX mainboard. And for the power hungry, it then could be extended to house arrays of harddisks (4x SATA harddisks for example, as that seems to be possible with SAM) and a couple of DVD-drives.

So, you really need to put down a number of requirements. Get them approved with potential buyers and go for it! Note that there is a little positive point on the SAM / SAM FLEX / Natami products being that they seem to follow those ATX/ITX standards meaning that the cases could appeal to other people as well (the kind that want to house their VIA Epia systems for example.

Bert.

what do you mean with wedge case?
i wouldn't mind an a1200 style case, something like the phantasy case.
that would be truely unique and feel very amiga. i bet you'd get a lot of sales, as such a case is nowhere to be found.

edit: if that ain't possible, i like the clean cube style. as small as possible.

Is a small "pizzabox" shaped case out of the question? I'm not sure if this is viable option, but I'd love to see small box with correct bolts/holes that one could put behind VESA-mountable LCD-screen like a backpack.

Tower/desktop or Wedge style (Amiga 500 etc...)

You can't use any PCI cards in A500 style case ! I prefer as small and shiny cases as possible like your Minimig case or that Nexus Psile case for example. (But PCI cards must fit inside.) No tower cases. Cube yes.
