Oh, that will be nice Amiga 500

The X500 PLUS is my latest design. A custom computer case with inbuilt keyboard very much inspired by the classic Commodore Amiga 500, in size and dimensions. Designed for the latest NG motherboards for Amiga OS; SAM440EP, 440Flex and 460EX by ACube, it should also be suitable for other mini-ITX and Flex ATX motherboards (Intel, Asus, Gigabyte, Zotac, Natami, fpga-arcade etc...). I'll try and test as many motherboards as possible and a list of suitable boards will be available. At the moment the case has been tested with the SAM440EP, SAM440 Flex ATX, SAM460EX (Flex-ATX) running AmigaOS 4.1and an EPIA-M mini-ITX running Linux and Windows. The X500 PLUS has been designed with expansion in mind allowing the user to install up to three 2.5" hard or solid state drives, DVD-RW/Blu-ray drive, but more importantly space for the user to modify/play with. The X500 PLUS presents two expansion slots. It's ideal for mini-ITX boards. For Flex-ATX boards a bit of ingenuity to use two cards might be required but it can be done.
Graphics cards tested (card length and thickness limit applies)
ATI Radeon 9200, 9250 PCI
ATI Radeon 4650 PCI-Express
NVidia based Asus 7500LE PCI-Express
Network Card:
3COM 10/100 PCI
Tenda Gigabit PCI
SATA controller:
Digitus 2 Sata controller RAID 0/1 PCI
Sound Card:
Sound Blaster Live! PCI
Users are welcome to let me know about more suitable cards/boards.
Thank you.

@vox and 1Mouse

Sorry about the lack of updates, a few things got in the way and I have also been busy on the latest version of the Minimig case.

Regarding the X500.

I am working on reducing it in size. I know I said it was inspired by my first Amiga (the Amiga 500 Plus) and at the moment it's only slightly smaller (in height, depth and width) but I am trying to make it as compact as possible.

Also trying to make it look less like a Russian tank. There are limits to how much I can bend aluminium.

The case is best used with mini-itx boards but flex boards such as the SAM440 flex 800MHz and the SAM460 1.15GHz also fit, the only drawback at the moment is the use of extra slots as I am planning to use just one expansion slot as on mini itx boards.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't try installing more than one card, it can be done but it's tricky.

I have concentrated mainly on one slot, as expanding with a faster graphics card is important to me (I am a shameless gamer!)

I have also been contacted by people who are interested in using the case with x86 hardware, people who want to run Windows, Linux, AROS etc...

The case accepts mini-itx and flexATX boards so no problem there.

The thing to look out for is while with an energy efficient board like the SAM an 80-90W PSU is enough with x86 you need a lot more power.

At the moment I am testing the X500 with:

SAM440ep, Flex, 460 and OS4.1 (Radeon 7000, 9200, 9250, 4650)

and

x86 mini-itx with 16GB DDR3 memory
ATI 1GB PCI Express x16 graphics card (onboard graphics suck!)
Windows 7, Ubuntu

Games tested:

Quake 1, 2 and 3
Half Life 2, Episode 1 and 2
Doom 3
Quake 4
WOW
FarCry
Crysis
Duke Nukem Forever

I have also had to stop as I ran out of money, so I have been selling bit and bobs on ebay

Hopefully soon...or the usual two weeks/when it's done!

@TheDaddy

Thanks for the progress and status update!

Nice idea, way better then some other designs

P.S.
Russian tanks used to be monsterous, but did the job quite well,
they didn`t put much in look. Off course for case its important

No problem.

I will take pictures when it's near completion, both with SAM running OS4.1 and the x86 board with Windows 7 running games such as Duke Nukem Forever or any of the above.

@Shufflepuck

Yes a new version of the Minimig case, as a few people have been asking for one more batch.

The X500 should follow, I just need to see how well it can handle this set up as the SAMs seem to be covered:

x86 mini-itx with 16GB DDR3 memory
ATI 1GB PCI Express x16 graphics card
Windows 7, Ubuntu

and the following games (they all seem to work well under Win7 at the moment)

Doom 3
Quake 4
Quake 1, 2 and 3
Half Life 2, Episode 1 and 2
WOW
Crysis
FarCry
Bioshock
Duke Nukem Forever

A computer with inbuilt keyboard that can handle the above games should be quite a treat or shall I say threat?

It looks more like a BBC Micro than an Amiga 500 to me.

It doesn't matter, I am not making a replica.

The Amiga 500 is the inspiration, I like to think about the X500 as the spiritual successor of the Amiga 500, case wise.

I have just realised that you said BBC Micro...

Really?

You should have gone to Specsavers or whatever your local optician is

@TheDaddy

OK, " X500 PLUS project"
Sorry can`t change the thread name now,

Nice it will be there for ALL formsize x86 boards as well as PPC ones.

Looking forward to see pics and consider it a possible case.

OK, great!

But not before I have verbally abused you and danwood. (it's a joke!)

PS: >>Nice it will be there for ALL formsize x86 boards as well as PPC ones

If you want to assemble a pc (x86) for running Windows, Linux or AROS (as long as the motherboard you choose is supported) then you can do that, I believe the iMica board is a mini-itx board so you could put it in and run Icaros.

You might even want to install an Amiga/C64/Atari etc... emulator so you can have the complete experience!

I'll replace my gaming (Win7) pc with it and have one for OS4, but that is just me
