As I am very close in obtaining a job with the UN, I'll probably need a place to stay for 6 months in New York. Is there anyone that can point me to some good websites where I can find appartments that are for rent for 6 months?

Or perhaps you have a spare room? I am very good with Amigas.

Perhaps another option would be an affordable "extended stay", something like an hotel room with small kitchen, preferably with a good public transport connection to the UN.

The price range I have in mind is around $2000/month. I am not familiar with the prices in NY, but I guess Manhattan is out of the question.

Depending where you are talking on Manhattan you might be able to find 2 bedroom to share for that. Quite a few people there sublet their living room you very likely can find a 1 bedroom to share where you get the living room.

Coming out of temporary retirement to help you out:

You could probably get by with a place in Queens or Long Island even and take the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to the city. It's not a very long commute. I'm certain that apartments are much cheaper in these areas than in the city. Try these sites:

http://longisland.craigslist.org/
http://newyork.craigslist.org/

Good luck!

@cell

Thanks for the links. That was really what I was looking for.

@BrianK

Hmmm, images of SWF are coming up. Although the roles would be switched.
But it is something to consider.

@jkirk

I know, life isn't fair. But this is only a 6 month contract, so I don't have time to wait and I would prefer a fully furnished place. And of course the pay does include those things. On the other hand, now you know where a lot of the UN money is going.

@jiyong

I have just another question.

I have a Motorola RAZR, unlocked. And this one should work just fine in the US.
What would you recommend me to buy when I want a prepaid sim-only package?

Which providers do you recommend?

Seriously, NYC apartments are ridiculously expensive and...very small...

You might be better off renting in northern New Jersey and just taking NJ Transit into the city.

@dauber

But where 's the fun in that?

If I would know for sure I would live a couple of years in the US, I might consider New Jersey or Long Island, but for now I am only certain for 6 months.

Any thoughts on the SIM cards?
