Good for Sony. It's about time they had a market compelling solution. I'm interested if it'll stay this way. I believe we saw people not buying PS3s for a couple of months and then jumping in when the rumored price cut did occur.

Sony's lead here, again nice, but not place saving. Next Gen consoles are rumored to ship in 2012. If the lead we saw in Sept is the best Sony can do they are unlikely to catch up with the 360, to say nothing of the Wii, prior to the next-gen launch.

Capcom is porting it's last gen Framework (the one used for RE5) to Wii...

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/27/rumor-capcom-adapting-next-gen-mt-framework-for-wii/

Well more a rumor than anything, but it's not the only one site talking about it.

Netflix To Stream Video Via Sony Playstation 3 Consoles

Though a bit strange that one needs a NetFlix Blu-Ray for this feature on the PS3. Not only the 360 but HTPCs and many Blu-Ray players don't need a disc to do this it's built in. Late 2010 Netflix sees an embedded solution for the PS3. Netflix believes it's service will come in a future console update. One has to wonder on why so long?

This ability has been on the 360 for a while; though as a Gold Membership option only. Microsoft has responded by announcing include for Silver Members.

Overall I see this as an example of competition is good. The PS3 users were jealous of the cool kids that could play NetFlix. They gain that ability. The PS3 gave it for free. As a result the 'charge' relating to the Gold membership on the 360 is being dropped. Each company making their product more competitive.

Yeah for the Wii -- certainly one could use this as a streaming device. It's always nice to see the little guy get features of it's less popular older brothers.

@Thread
Sony recently announced another loss for their video game division, $654 Million. Sony's CFO states they should reach profitability some point in the next term. (yeah how many times have we heard this.) Losses for Sony on the PS3 are nearing $5 Billion. Really with those numbers why would a company want to be in the videogame industry?

The UK had no price cut. Nintendo hate the UK and hence I hate them back. I consider it an attack on Nintendo everytime I play 'The Great Giana Sisters' or the Hudson (2nd Party Nintendo loving developer) Bomber Killer - 'Blitz Bombers'!

Plus the 6502 used in the NES was a second source version by Ricoh, a partial system-on-a-chip, that lacked a binary-coded decimal mode but added 22 memory-mapped registers for sound generation, joypad reading, and sprite list DMA. Called 2A03 in NTSC consoles and 2A07 in PAL consoles (the difference being the memory divider ratio and a lookup table for audio sample rates), this processor was produced exclusively for Nintendo.- the cunning Japs! No money for MOS and Chuck Peddle

Myamoto talks about WiiMotionPlus in next Zelda

http://www.wiitalia.it/2009/11/03/miyamoto-parla-del-wii-motionplus-in-zelda-wii/

The site is in Italian but it tells something like:

Quote:
We are right now developing the MotionPlus controls in order to have the player feeling like wielding a real sword.

As soon as I find a link to an English version of this News I'll post it there.

EDIT:

Here you have the link with the English translation:

On one hand the consoles are the end-user's property once they buy them. If they want to alter them then no one can stop them. So this seems a bit unfair. On the other hand an altered console could give players an unfair gaming advantage. I wouldn't want to play against someone who is or can cheat the game. Microsoft owns the online rules so if an unadulterated console is a rule then it's a rule.

Interesting that this Christmas we're seeing more press against the Wii.

Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii powered by IBM, AMD/ATI(for X360/Wii) and NVIDIA(PS3).

It's official now: Cell is a dead end.
IBM discontinues further development of the Cell.

It clearly says hybrids are the future - not that it is a complete dead end!

But the development of a Cell successor is abandooned. I'd say that qualifies pretty much as a dead end for Cell. Or do you rate Cell after abandoning an actual successor as vivid?
I think we may see OpenCL taking over where the SPE once was thought to score: to do the actual heavy computing. Whether OpenCL uses some gfx chip or SPE units is of no big importance though. So maybe there will be more chips that coem with soem SE units, maybe not. I'd say the particular hardware becomes more and more irrelevant (a coder doesn't has to care anymore if the bulk of the computatio gets executed by a particular harware unit (like the SPEs) or any other available chip as long as it has OpenCL support.

But in the context of Amiga et al. I wouldn't try to follow the Cell path. Too much effort for a *very* uncertain future.
