@fatman2021

1) I believe Amiga Forever 6.0 has the ability to run a small Linux kernel and start the emulator directly.
While not exactly what you want you could just add Forever to the Startup group and it'll be started at server boot time. I think you may need to click one to get the Amiga up.

2) Why not use one of the various Amiga MSDos emulators?

As BrianK said, please buy amiga forever 6 on CD ROM I'm going to buy my copy as soon as I can get it in the UK, It boots a small Linux distro, similar to Knoppix so it will support popular hardware!

It also comes with alot of extra software !

@fatman2021

For winnt,2k and xp:
start regedit, find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and change shell=explorer.exe to shell=( insert path and filename of UAE executable here)

For 95 to ME:
Find system.ini, open in editor and replace explorer.exe with winuae

I give no guarantee that this will work, your on your own if it doesn't.

@peggus

I can confirm that this idea works, but you need to know how to revert back again, which might not be so obvious.

On NT based systems (NT, 2K, XP) hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the task manager, click "New Task" and either type "regedit" to bring back the registry editor, or "explorer.exe" to bring back Windows.

In fact I have created an extra reg entry for Amiga Forever, (AmigaShell) so all I have to do is rename shell to Winshell, and rename AmigaShell to Shell, and to revert, just rename the entries again, that way you can quickly change options. Of course it goes without saying, if you aew not comfortable editing the registry DONT !

It's damn awful that I know all this windows crap, but . . .

On any WinNT type, be it NT,2000, or XP, don't use regedit.

Use Regedt32

In some cases, normal 16-bit Regedit might damage your 32-bit Windows Registry, at least according to our pal's at MS.

Damn glad that you don't need a special text editor to edit the startup sequences on Workbench 3, vs the wb2 startups. :)

While you can bang away at the registry, you might want to look at the following sites and the sites to which they have links. The top two are portal sites, the third is more of a file repository, and the last two are direct links to 'shell' managers.

http://www.desktopian.org/
http://shellfront.org/
http://shellcity.net/
http://www.dx13.co.uk/programs/index.html
http://sourceforge.net/projects/snf/

Be warned though, the alternative Win32 shell scene is, for lack of a better word, fickle. You might come across sites and projects that have been inactive for a year or more.

Sorry, can't be too much help on this... I've wondered though if it might not be possible to get a VNC server/client running between the host OS and the hosted AmigaOS to give the appearance of running Windows apps in the UAE environment... Kind of the way the Siamese system did (or was supposed to). [-Edit-] Perhaps by assigning the IP of the server to 127.0.0.1 and the client to 127.0.0.2? I honestly hove no idea if this would work. I've just wondered. [-Edit-]

In the mean time, your best bet is to run UAE in a window and switch back and forth between Windows and UAE... You might find using an alternate shell a means of softening such a blow... As I take it you're pretty fed up with the Windows environment... Of the shells out there, I can recommend (in no particular order) BB4Win, GeoShell, sharpE, and LiteStep.

Another warning. Alternative Windows shells are not always the easiest things to manage. For example, the last time I checked LiteStep had two or three competing theme 'standards' and three or four different 'distributions'.

[Edit]
Forgot to add this link.

http://www.virtualplastic.net/html/art_amiga.html

This site demonstrates just how "fickle" the alternate shell scene is. Many of links on this site are broken. But there are some real gems hidden here...

@BeyonderX

Problem is, there are things you can do in regedit you can't do in regedt32... Can't think of them off hand (I doubt they have any bearing on this thread), but there are certain key differences.

I have always used regedit. All the MSDN instructions I have seen that involve registry editing use regedit. Got me worried now!

@All,

Pardon my ignorance but is Amiga Forever a Amiga emulator, or is it a rebundled WinUAE? If it is, which is better?

That Workbench Nostalgia; history of the AmigaOS GUI: Index website is pretty cool. Interesting to see the beta's and read the insider comments.

@Intuitioned

Greg hosts quite a bit of neat stuff. He also hosts the AmigaOS 3.5 & 3.9 FAQs and "Unofficial" support for the GVP 060 accelerators. If you found his site interesting, then you might want to take a look at these (if you haven't already).

Amiga Forever contains both UAE and Fellow... but the thing is, it is all the other stuff like licensed roms etc that makes it such a great offer.
