This DOES sound just like 2000 (or whenever it was) -- or maybe it was wishful thinking believing that anything had changed.

Maybe OS4 isn't the white knight that's going to come in and save Amiga, Inc. (after having been discarded in favor of AmigaDE) -- maybe it was just a "distraction".

I suppose it's possible that the reason "future versions of the Amiga operating system are not available for third party development or distribution" is because the rights have already been assigned to Hyperion.

That seems very unlikely, though. The site makes it very clear that Hyperion has the right to develop "AmigaOS 4.0" for the "AmigaOne & Cyberstorms" ONLY (what about the ACK accelerators?).

I'll TRY to keep a positive attitude, but "I've got a very bad feeling about this . . ."

@Wiffy

There is a big difference between allowing handguns and allowing gambling. Or are you saying having a gambling addiction is as bad as having an addiction to shooting people?

I'd compare it more to alcohol prohibition. The effects of alcohol addiction are self destruction, the need for money to fund a habit, and the probable loss of family and friends. These are very bad consequences, but I don't want to have to give up my friday evening pint of beer just because some other people can't moderate their behaviour.

The problem with handguns is they are designed to do one thing and one thing only; kill people. They're not for game hunting, or pest control, they are for killing people. They're not like knives; you can't use one to carve up a sunday roast. That, in itself, is a good reason to ban them.

@Wiffy

OK, so that post was posted before my edit... but i'll respond here too. The problem with handguns is not there relative badness compared to gambling, but the fact that they are devices designed for one purpose only; killing people.

The primary reason people gamble or drink is for recreation. The problems of addiction to these recreational activities is something which can be addressed by other means, such as reducing poverty, changing attitudes, etc.

@xeron

???

I believe the point was that both have "potentially" dangerous consequences, if used irresponsibly.

I don't gamble OR use guns, but I've "personally" seen the devastation that both can cause.

However, this is seriously "off-topic".

I hope that at least they will be open to suggestions and critics from the users. Instead of that big "casino-spam site" style image I would rather put the news items, as in the old site.
That's the first thing I would like to read everytime I visit the web page.

@xeron

Gambling is an activity designed for one purpose only, to suck money from the person to the casino.

If its down to degrees of self control ( and people use handguns for recreation apparently ) then why expect self control in one place and not another - thats politics. Hence nanny state, what is nannying to you is different to what is nannying to another - to another its a percieved necessity.

Anyhow, I dont believe in legalised handguns or illegal gambling.

I find the new site and the updated information HIGHLY ironic.

@Wiffy

Well.. this is seriously off-topic now, so i'll stop.

Suffice to say I think you make excellent and valid points, but I also think the points I have made are fair, too. I think there is no 'right' or 'wrong' answer to this sort of debate, but in my view I think it is fair to make handgun ownership illegal, but allow gambling (with strict regulations).

I should point out my bias here, though, I program fruit machines for a living

Yeah ... Anyway we can enjoy our A1 machines and OS4 but ...

Let's see, what comments Hyperion gives. If success of OS4 is enought, they will change their mind in Ainc, perhaps, maybe etc...

@treblesix

1.1 ? Where did you get that ?

Or do you mean 1.0.1. I have heard rumours that 1.1 is suppoed to be released in next summer

Anyway Firefox 1.0.1 works just fine here too. No problems with that site.

Here it works ok. Maybe some secturity settings are the problem since the images have an https address.

As I have suspected for a very long time, it is now clear to me that neither Amiga Inc nor their new website has any relevance whatsoever to Amigans anymore (so I don't care about its amateurish looks).

This also makes the upcoming IRC session with Garry Hare quite uninteresting. Of course I think it's nice of DaveyD to arrange this, and he had the best intention in doing so. But obviously it would be far more interesting for an Amigan to have Alan Redhouse or the leader of Hyperion (who is that BTW) at the keyboard for that session.

In fact, I can no longer think of a single interesting question to ask Mr Hare. I simply don't care about their rebadged TAO stuff for M$ Windows, not for a second!

Hi smithy, klesterjr, others,

I don't think there's a problem.

I think you have taken it out of context.

Quote:
Amiga, Inc. does not distribute or support AmigaOS 4.0. For information on product availability, support, local dealers or resellers, please contact AmigaOne Partners through either Hyperion VOF or Eyetech Ltd.

For information on licensing, adaptation or modification of any existing Amiga Operating System, please contact, technologylicensing@amiga.com

Please note, the development of future versions of the Amiga Operating System is not available for third party development or distribution.

Observe:
1. "Amiga, Inc. does not distribute or support AmigaOS 4.0."

If they don't, WHO DOES????

Hyperion Entertainment, obviously!

2. "please contact AmigaOne Partners through either Hyperion VOF or Eyetech Ltd."

It says "partners", which should be higher than "third party" status, right?

3. "For information on licensing, adaptation or modification of any existing Amiga Operating System, please contact, technologylicensing@amiga.com "

Contact Amiga Inc., then they contract Hyperion Entertainment to make a working copy of AOSx.x available for YOUR hardware.

I believe they are laying legal claim to AOS, in no uncertain terms, that it ONLY works on Amiga Inc. licensed hardware.

Hyperion Entertainment writes code, Amiga Inc. decides where it runs.

AmigaOne! AOS4.0! It HAS begun!

Not only images, but all subpages as well. What's the point in using encrypted transfer for a page like https://www.amiga.com/amigaos/ anyway?

Hi Wiffy

AOS4+.x isn't AmigaOne exclusive.

When I asked someone of the Friedens about this, I got the impression that you have to get a deal with Hyperion for the OS (Hyperion are the ones owning the OS) and Amiga Inc for the rights to use the "Amiga" trademark (Amiga Inc are the ones owning the trademark).
