Hi,
I downloaded the file in question and copied it to ram: I used the CGX_VMEM setting and both window play and full screen for playback. I used the usual sdl for audio. The file is DIVX5x MPEG-4 codec with PCM audio and played back almost perfectly in both window and full screen. The only flaw - video ended slightly before audio. Use of "framedrop" in the "extras" menu did not affect that slight flaw. I then copied the file to a disk partition and repeated my tests. The file played back just as well from disk as from ram: I saw -no- size corruption take place in either case. I do not deny that this happened to you, however. What were your settings? Did you use Shell or GUI for playback? Do you have an A1 SE?

@mwoof
Hi,
I downloaded the file in question and copied it to ram: -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
So did I. Here's the results I got with different settings.
mplayer -vo cgx_vmem -ao sdl -fs cavestomp.avi Gave me scratchy audio & the video was cut short after 10s.
mplayer -vo cgx_vmem -ao ahi_dev -fs cavestomp.avi Gave me clean audio & the video played for 16s, audio started before & ended after the video.
Strange as the angels.avi on the OS3.9 CD would not play audio with the -ao ahi_dev option, only with the sdl option.

Just tested this again with your setting for audio -ao ahi_dev. Confirmed. Runs about 15-16s, video ends before audio.
Strangeness confirmed also, as sdl has been the most effective setting for audio playback on the Micro A1-C, anyway.
IMO this is a codec in question at the moment. There was one other report on this codec, I believe. Perhaps it was in the original "news" article.
My initial concern, of course, regarded the report of disk trashing with this file. I did not have that, fortunately. Nor did you. Praise the ramdisk for that little safety cushion in testing.

Did you notice the audio quality difference between the 2 audio settings? sdl=scratchy, ahi_dev=clean
Also your FLC video played ok, but the FLI played a black screen. No audio in either. Last edited by sundown on 29-Jul-2005 at 03:24 AM.

My little set of cheapo speakers has prevented me from discussing overall audio quality on playback. There -is- a difference though. I trust you on your analysis. Isn't that backwards from what we experienced before using sdl vs ahi?

Quote:
Hi, Are you playing the three sizes of "Cars" in a "window" or in "full screen"?
In "full screen" the program would select a low resolution screen for playback of your "small" cars video. That, in itself, would produce more artifacting. If (again assuming you are playing full screen) you look at your P96 settings and press "test" for 320x240 32bit, is the screen centered? If not, then you may not have set a screen for 320x240. Go to edit and use the arrow keys to center the screen. When it is reasonably well centered, exit and save. Reboot. Try playing the "small" cars video and it should be centered. If these instructions are not clear, let me know please.
If, however, you have a shift in "window" mode, please let the thread know.

It does the same thing whether I play it in full screen or a window. It's not the window itself that's moving, just some of the stuff inside it. For example, the Disney logo at the beginning moves to the left but the background doesn't. During the rest of the movie some parts of the image move to the left but others don't.
It played fine on the previous mplayer (pre-release 3)
I tried changing the P96 settings like you suggested. Same results.

Yes, backwards, it looks like avi files come in different forms.

Thank you for the detailed response. Sorry if I steered you wrong with the hint about P96, but if you hadn't set up a centered screen for 320x240 it could appear that a shift in the screen contents -had- taken place. As far as the whole video moving, please give me a little info. I have another player to test with, but I am on serial dialup. How big are these "car" files in MB?

Regarding the MPEG4 file:I have my windows on screen for verbose output from both angels.avi and the MPEG4 file in question. The difference I see:Angels.avi depth: 16 frequency: 22050 and bits: 16 MPEG4 file depth: 24 frequency: 11025 and bits: 8 Both report audio as PCM. Horizontal and vertical resolution are slightly different, but I do not see that as a factor in playback for either of these.
Regarding the FLI file:Try again please. This file does not start immediately, and these samples are quite short, so don't blink. There is -no- audio in the file, so do not expect any. Please revert to sdl for audio, just to imitate my settings. Framedrop is -not- necessary. FLI is "low" stress file format.

Hi again,
Thanks for the updated link. I downloaded the file "cars-teaser_m240.mov". Please let me know if that is the correct one.

Hmm. I tried again with that file and it had no problem! But with another file it still increases the size. Oddly enough, that one becomes "only" 50 MB and then... plays...
I tested both files with the GUI and the shell. I do have an SE, so could it be another one of its faults?
Another interesting thing is that I got the opposite results than Sundown! In fact, I got NO picture with ahi_dev! _________________ And may the AmigaGuide you!

Hi,
Thank you for your reply. After reading your original post, I PMd a friend with an SE. I thought I remembered that was your model of A1. Hopefully he will run a test on this file and give us the results. Let's wait on that before we look at this issue any further. Curious though, Is there any mathematical relationship you see between the "real" file sizes and the sizes that are showing? Is it showing the same number in the shell (OS) as with a disk utility? Do you have UBoot(March)? Update3? DMA? Latest AHI 6.2c from OS4depot? Sorry for all the questions.

Hi, I have both the latest UBoot and AHI device. I still use update 2 though, due to problems with a1ide.device and PIO mode...
Hmm. Maybe I should try this on update 3.
By the way, here's the link to the second file (warning - violence!):

Sorry. I forgot a question. Fixed or unfixed SE. Just for comparison with my friend, in case of a different test result. IMO this is not an issue with update3 as such, but I cannot prove this yet. @thread The issue of audio and network is a separate issue. But... For the purpose of testing MPlayer, would everyone be so kind as to do all testing while OFF the network. I would like to remove at least one possible cause of problems from the equation. Thanks.
If, however, anyone produces an entirely different result when playing the -same- file with MPlayer on and off the network with identical settings and testing procedure then please notify the thread.

Unfixed SE.
[EDIT] My setup is now visible as signature! Apparently I had not configured my profile correctly - AWeb didn't detect the changes, so I booted Linux and used Mozilla. Last edited by mwoof on 29-Jul-2005 at 05:42 PM.

| Hi all,
Anyone knows how to play a vcd using mplayer? I tried:
mplayer -fs -cdrom-device sii0680ide.device:2 vcd://1
but it says:
File vcd://1 not found!
whereas this successfully plays a DVD:
mplayer -fs -dvd-device sii0680ide.device:2 dvd://1
Any help is appreciated.
Thanx, Firbodi
