Yes, but what are you gonna use as the driver API, OpenGL doesn't define one, does it? |
That's the point. No, it doesn't, therefore, you're free to do whatever you need to.
The plan is to have an opengl.library. It defines the native mode interface (think WGL, GLX, etc), and the usual OpenGL entries. The driver implementation provides all the OpenGL entries. This means that yes, in essence, every hardware driver is a full OpenGL implementation. This allows the driver to do as little as neccessary in software while relying on it's hardware features.
If you define a driver interface, you'll end up not being able to cope with everything. For example, Warp3D is unsuited for T&L, simply because from day 1, it's been using screen coordinates... At that time, it was OK since no hardware even had T&L.
If you look at what for example Mesa currently does, you'll see that it doesn't have a ridgid defined "driver interface" any more. It's more or less a large OpenGL "template": You can provide some functions, and it will be a full OpenGL, but OTOH, you can also elect to do things different and just use parts of Mesa if your hardware does allow some shortcuts.
In the old days, Mesa had a "low-level driver interface", and Warp3D was meant to be mapped to that. But things have changed. Efficiency is diminished if you push everything through an abstract driver interface. Maximum efficiency means keeping the ways from the application to the hardware as short as possible...

Well, my favorite was "Yeah, we know that sex is a bad substitute for Star Trek"... this one was so fitting in this context, I could laugh even though the dead animal on your food was still staring at me with it's cold, empty and lifeless eyes.

But sex IS a bad substitute for Star Trek. Mind you, Star Trek shouldn't be had as a substitute for sex either, but that wasn't the point. _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). This was on the evening before the show... after putting up everything in the exhibition hall, we were standing outside the venue and we decided to get something to eat... Someone asked "where to ?", and that's when Ole-Egil said that (of course, replace "frigging" with the, uh, other word).
(If somebody doesn't get it yet, it was in Sweden )
And there's Ole-Egil, still wondering why the call him "Old-Evil" _________________ Thomas, the kernel guy

Ah, the same way as it's done on Windows, isn't it? Well, you should be able to keep big big parts of the driver for the Radeon family, I guess but wouldn't you need to do a totally different implementation for other cards? Not that it matters, apart from the fact that it takes time, but time is money. _________________

It's called ICD there, installable client driver. I just wanted to avoid that word since it means I'll be accused of transforming AmigaOS into Windows next _________________ Thomas, the kernel guy

Mark 'bigfoot' Olsen has released five screenshots showing his Quake III port for MorphOS. Picture 1 Picture 2 Picture 3 Picture 4 Picture 5 Picture 6
These screenshots were released after ~5 hours working on the sources.
The 2 videos released earlier were not fake but they weren't of the official Q3 but of a Q3 compatible engine that even connects to Q3 servers. _________________
