Hi Everyone Else,

Making the foundation SW that everything else works on has GOT to be the HARDEST SW to make.*

They've done a monumental task here against insurmountable obstacles, and people like MS should be embarrassed right back to kindergarten programming level!!!!!!

That's all I have to say. (Maybe.)

(micro)AmigaOne! AOS4.0! Making the impossible possible!

Is it stable? Oh yeah, very stable here. Do I get corrupt files? No never. Is it fast? Well, I guess it's fast on a LAN but on the net it's slow as hell!

That's the problem. Linux Debian on my A1 G4 XE transfers files as fast as it should but the current driver doesn't or does get anywhere close! They *got* to solve this. I'd like to know that it works here and everywhere before the final.

Hi hotrod,

So, it works, but is slow. Good, I was wondering what exactly was the nature of the problem.

On pre-release 1, if I use AWeb it's very slow, however, if I use IBrowse FIRST, THEN I use AWeb, it usually is 2 to 4 times faster (that's a guesstimate), BUT it IS faster. I don't understand that at all.

Whether I start dnetc rc5 or not, doesn't affect the speed of the browsers, just dnetc slows down, it's very, very cool. I don't have the Altivec working, G4 @ 800 MHz, and get ~3,050,000 keys a second, and my windrossxp(ire) does, with no programs working, 3.15 to 3.25 million keys a second!!!! (P4, not celeron, 2.26 GHz, 400 MHz FSB, 1 GB ram!)

I have a 5 Mbit connection, what's the fastest that anyone's gotten going?

@DoodooHead

Totally agree with DoodooHead. But remember Microsoft Longhorn is out next year, as is the Playstation 3, Revolution and probably a new Apple Mac. Amiga is a very small fish in an ocean of big name marketing and machines that combine software and hardware. I think Eyetech are an amazing and innovative company and if they were able to make an Amiga computer in conjunction with Hyperion with hardware/software released at the same time, it would stand a chance. As it stands there is no marketing and no machine in the pipeline, except from some unknown Trokia?! Eyetech's A1 designs work, so if finance is a problem, why don't Amiga Inc buy the designs so that production can start again? Finally, the original Amiga dream came about when a couple of dentists invested in the fledgling computer industry. Where is this investment today? Unless investors with money have faith in this platform, this is going nowhere. We have the A1 designs and a mostly finished OS. Lets cut the red tape and run with it!

Exactly. And they're waiting patiently for Petunia, a CDDB-able CD player, fuller Warp3D drivers, etc.

PlayCD has the ability to use CDDB since PlayCD 50.3 (31.12.2002)

For me all I have to do is add 'USECDDB' to the icon info for playCD for me to have album name and track info displayed.

Never had to enter any other options

also a nice note to remember in workbench when you insert a CD

Supported qualifiers (press when inserting the CD):

- : Disables data track on mixed audio+data CDs,
mounts ISO 9660 instead of HFS/HFS+ on hybrid CDs.
- : Disables audio tracks on mixed audio+data CDs.

for more PlayCD options here is an excerpt from the readme
remember these can also be added to the icon info for playcd not just from shell
Starting the program
--------------------
When the program is launched, it will attempt to configure itself. This
involves figuring out which device driver and which device unit to use
for audio playback. This information is usually stored in the program's
icon, but it can also provided on the command line. The names of the
command line options and the tool types are the same. The following
options are supported:

DOSDEV

If there already is a filing system mounted on the CD-ROM drive
to use for audio playback, the easiest way to tell PlayCD which
device it should use is to provide that filing system's name.
PlayCD will try to figure out which device and unit that
filing system is bound to and use the resulting information.

Example: PlayCD CD0:
PlayCD dosdev CD2:

Note that this type of configuration may not work with all
CD-ROM filing systems.

DEVICE

Use this option to provide the name of the device driver the
CD-ROM drive to use for playback responds to.

Example: PlayCD device=scsi.device

Default for this option is "scsi.device".

UNIT

This option works in conjunction with the "DEVICE" parameter.
Both the device name and the unit number specified define the
interface the PlayCD program should use to address the CD-ROM
drive.

Example: PlayCD unit=5

Default for this option is "2".

SKIP

The PlayCD user interface sports a slider which controls and
displays the current play index. Attached to this slider are
two buttons which perform "fast forward" and "rewind"
functionality. Pressign any of these two buttons will cause
playback to skip a few seconds. The "SKIP" option is for
configuring the number of seconds to skip.

Example: PlayCD skip=2

Default for this option is "1", i.e. clicking on the buttons
will skip one second each.

PEEKTIME

PlayCD queries the CD-ROM drive in regular intervals to find
out whether the CD was changed or how far playback has progressed.
The length of these intervals is configured with the "PEEKTIME"
option. The peek time is specified in microseconds, i.e. one
millionth part of a second.

Example: PlayCD peektime=500000

Default for this option is "200000", i.e. one fifth of a second.

PUBSCREEN

PlayCD can be made to open its display on a named public screen.
If the named screen does not exist, it will fall back to opening
its display on the default public screen, such as the Workbench
screen.

Example: PlayCD pubscreen=my.public.screen

There is no default for this option. Default behaviour for
PlayCD is to open its display on the default public screen
which in most cases will be the Workbench screen.

BUFMEMTYPE

PlayCD depends upon the controller hardware the CD-ROM drive is
attached to to deliver its commands properly. This may sometimes
require that the command data structures are passed in a
particular type of memory which the controller hardware has
easy access to. In most cases you will not need to change this
option, but if the CD-ROM drive is correctly configured, does
support the SCSI-2 command set and still does not react to
PlayCD's commands, then it might be necessary to specify a
different buffer memory type.

Example: PlayCD bufmemtype=2
PlayCD bufmemtype=512

Default for this option is "0", which specifies no particular
type of memory to use for interacting with the controller
hardware.

USECDDB

PlayCD can query the CDDB Internet database for each disc that
is inserted into the player. This option is disabled by default.
If you want to use it, make sure that you have an Amiga TCP/IP
stack installed which is compatible with the AmiTCP V4 API. The
TCP/IP stack must be properly configured, up and running, and
there must be a connection to the Internet. If there is no
information for a disc in the local data cache, PlayCD will
query the CDDB Internet database and store the data it finds in
a local cache for later reference.

Example: PlayCD usecddb

URL

Which Internet resource should be accessed to obtain CDDB data
for the currently present disc. By default, this is

http://freedb.org:80/~cddb/cddb.cgi

The "http://" header is optional and will be ignored if found.
The port number, as given above, is optional, too and will
be assumed to be 80 if is missing.

Example: PlayCD url=http://freedb.org:80/~cddb/cddb.cgi

PROXY

If a proxy server is your only connection to the Internet,
you need to provide its name and port number here. For example,
it could look this this:

http://your.proxy:8080

Note that the port number must be given; there is no common
standard for http proxy servers which denotes the port number
to use by default.

If you do not provide the URL to use for the proxy server, then
a direct connection to the Internet is assumed.

Example: PlayCD proxy=http://your.proxy:8080

USER

The CDDB protocol requires that you specify a user name and a
host name, even for inquiries. This must be given in the
following form:

user@host

Example: PlayCD user=foo@bar.com

CACHEDIR

Disc information obtained from the CDDB database will be
stored in local files in order to speed up accesses. Unless
you specify a certain directory to use for storing the
cached database entries in, "PROGDIR:CDDB-Cache" will be
used. Careful, if the given directory does not yet exist
it will be created for you.

Example: PlayCD cachedir=S:CDDB

The user interface
------------------
If properly configured, PlayCD will open a window which contains the
following controls (left to right):

Track display

Here you will find information about the current audio track
and the playback status. The first line displays the track
information, the second line indicates how much time has passed
with regard to length of the current track and the entire CD.

Track position (below the track display)

This slider displays the current track position. It can also be
used to change the current track position.

Keyboard equivalent: [Shift]+[Cursor left] and
[Shift]+[Cursor right] keys

Track selection

This is a set of 32 buttons, each one corresponding to one of
the tracks of the audio CD. Click a button to make the
corresponding audio track the "current track". If playback
is currently in progress, playback will proceed with the
selected track.

Keyboard equivalent: Any number entered, e.g. entering the
two digits "1" and "2" in quick succession
will pick track "12".

Volume

This is a vertical slider whose current setting corresponds to
the sound playback volume. At the top position, playback
volume is loudest.

Keyboard equivalent: + and - keys

Eject (below the Track position slider)

Press this button to eject/load the CD in the drive. For
technical reasons, you may need to press this button more
than once to load a CD.

Keyboard equivalent: [F1] and [Backspace] keys

Stop

Press this button to stop playback.

Keyboard equivalent: [F2] and [Cursor up] keys.

Pause

Press this button to suspend/resume playback.

Keyboard equivalent: [F3] and [Space] keys

Previous track

Press this button to skip back to the beginning of
the previous track.

Keyboard equivalent: [F4] and [Cursor left] keys

Play

Press this button to begin playback.

Keyboard equivalent: [F5] and [Cursor down] keys

Next track

Press this button to skip forward to the beginning of
the next track.

Keyboard equivalent: [F6] and [Cursor right] keys

Shuffle

Press this button to set up a play list which contains
all CD titles in random order. Playback will step through
this list, playing each title once. To return to the
regular play list which plays each title in the order the
tracks were recorded in, press the "Stop" button.

Keyboard equivalent: [F7] key

Playback mode

This button selects a playback mode; it can be one of the
following:

Continue

This is the default playback mode. If you pick a track
to play, it will be played along with all tracks to
follow it until the last track on the CD is played.
Clicking one of the track buttons in the track selection
table will make the respective track the "current
track".

Program

In this mode every track number entered or clicked on
will cause a new entry to be added to the play list. To
play back the list, click the "Play" button.

Track

In this mode playback will be restricted to the currently
selected track. This means, for example, that if a track
has been played to the end, playback will stop instead
of proceeding to the next track.

Keyboard equivalent: [F8] key

Repeat

This switch controls whether playback will stop when the end of
the play list has been reached or whether playback will restart
with the first list entry.

Keyboard equivalent: [F9] key

Message list (below the Eject button)

This is where helpful progress reports and error messages
are displayed. For example, if you picked a track by entering
its number, you will see a notice confirming your input.

Stopping the program
--------------------
Once the PlayCD program is running, you can stop it by clicking on
the window close gadget or by one of the keyboard equivalents
[Esc] or [Ctrl]+\.

@kgrach
Any thoughts as to why PlayCD always returns the following error message when
it attempts to find a CD Playlist in CDDB:

Could not process HTTP header (object is not of required type)??

I have all of the settings that you mentioned in the ToolTypes, but this
is what PlayCD always returns. This is why I wrote DiskDataBasePPC
(available from OS4Depoet.net BTW).

My internet connection is being done via RoadShow & obviously works, since I'm
typing this from my AmigaOne PowerPC. :?

Last time I checked, Hyperion wasn't a hardware company.

Yea, but if you guys were it would ROCK! Not to say that Eytech did all that bad for a pre-producton board.

Would you like Santa to bring you a soldering iron and a book about computer electronics for Christmas?

Oh well, I guess if we can believe in flying reindeer and a fat man that comes down your chimney then we can believe just about anything!

@kgrach

This has been up in another thread where it was confirmed by Olsen that the version
which is currently out for prerelease owners contains a bug. Which makes CDDB not
possible and gives the error message stychokiller mentioned.

@Rogue
You said that a public statement about hardware situation and possible/existing cooperation agreements with hardware manufacturers "would not make any difference."

I disagree that it won't make a difference.

@EntilZha/Ethilza/Thomas
Quote:
As I said, Hyperion does not make announcements for other companies... such cooperations are normally made public in a joint press release.

In that ACK thread, Adam said that he has been "co-operation with Hyperion for quite some time" and "will be handling the OS4 port as Hyperion is busy enough with other aspects of OS4."

Why couldn't you say something similar? Ok, no need for an announcement if there is no hardware (Elbox? Troika?) and no new agreements.

Btw, is Troika also in the OS4 team (unlike Elbox)?

I am grateful to have the information Kurt. Thanks for posting it.
It does bring a question to mind concerning tooltypes in general though.
It is easy to understand when a tooltype (for any program) is commented out ().
But when there IS a tooltype for a program but it is NOT listed in the icon, is
zero or "NOT" the default that is used?
In other words, does a non listed tooltype = commented out/nil in every case?
(Obviously I refer to tooltypes which are only true/false in nature)

Best Wishes,
#6

That's why we have SnoopDOS

If you put everything off you'll see what the program tries to start.

Using Roadshow in OS4 through a Netgear router set-up with NAT/firewall (seems to be working fine)

Tooltypes as below:

DOSDEV=CD1
(DEVICE=scsi.device)
(UNIT=2)
(SKIP=???)
(PEEKTIME=333333)
(PUBSCREEN=)
(BUFMEMTYPE=1)
USECDDB
URL=http://freedb.freedb.org/~cddb/cddb.cgi
(PROXY=)
USER=mark@somehting.net
CACHEDIR=Data:cddb

I've also fiddled with the username so the host part appears as the hostname my ISP assigns.

Also the version of PlayCD appears to be 50.5 (31/12/2002) as given int he icon information.

[edit] oops that'll teach me not to read the complete thread [/edit]

Heh...It seems that I must to reply to myself...heh
A whole bunch of answers but still there is no
concrete one.. The mighty guys from Hyperion
did a few answers but not on my question.
Any chances for at least a small, thin answer
from Hyperion... a spark in the dark.. ;)

All the best...

Same applies to me (see post #130). Sometimes they spend more time on answering to trolls, being easily offended... Selective perception? Maybe...

@polka.

All I wont is direct answers on direct questions sent to them (Hyperion) months ago!
Some of them are maybe outdated, some of them are answerd, but most of them is still valid ...
Why people ask that questions anyway ?
As I can see they have time now...
Is it so hard...?
