@matte74

The question is not stupid, but it shows that you haven't been reading any of the other threads about exactly that question.

The answer is "No, because the Peg uses different chips from those in an A1".

I'm not bringing anything. The only thing I meant is that this "when it's done" thing has just been proven wrong by the recent delay of OS4 *because of hardware not being ready". So maybe it's time to change this. What about something more serious and respectfull of the users ?

Just to carry on from ssolie's advice:

You may find, if you perform an Upgrade over an UPD3 installation, that some of your favourite settings might be lost (things like AmiDock layouts, GUI settings, etc). The installer that Rogue is working on is all about trying to preserve those settings and make sure (at the same time) that all executables are upgraded. It's difficult and time-consuming, and even amongst beta-testers, there are those with highly-customised systems that show up new problems whenever a test ISO ("Release Candidate") is released to beta-testers.

To save hassles later, back up your whole system, make a fresh install on a clean partition and be prepared to copy all your customised settings to the new system one by one.

That should keep everyone going for a week or so

Okay. We need a new emoticon that now says - 'When it's done and hardware is available'.

Like what? There's no hardware. I don't see how we users can be paid any more 'respect'.

@Rogue

Hi, thanks for the minor status update.. always appreciated.

I was wondering, there was an issue with our OpenGL in the last update that prevented some software from being ported. I cant remember what because I'm not a 3d guy, but I think you may remember. Has this issue been solved for update4?

Also, has SDL seen much of a speed up? as I understand it there was room for optimisation.. I get 38-45ish fps on my favourite MAME games, but if its possible to get another 5-10 without upgrading, that would be cool. :)

And lastly, is the new memory system going to be in update4?

I dont want sound like an ass kisser, but Eyetech and the OS4 team has give me the kick ass Amiga I always wanted. This is the A4000 I could never afford in the 90's. :)

The update is coming along, I will release the second release candidate to the testers today. If all goes well it should be out somewhere next week. If issues pop up, it will be delayed a bit. This is hard to predict.

Thanks Rogue! That was just what I wanted to hear.

@thread
Looking at Rogues comment, where he said update or re-install, and no prior updates required, that means the 'update' very likely replaces everything that is an aggregate of all prior updates. That also means lots of room for errors, and much testing- a fresh install is far easier to make 'just work' than upgrading people with different video cards, slight hardware/CPU differences, AND different update levels even.

That not means accounting for different platforms to install on, but in some cases, testers likely had to re-install to differen update levels and then test the 'upgrade' option...not fun, AND time consuming!

To that end I'd extremely very highly recommend installing upd4 brand new on a brand new formatted partition. Back that up and then reinstall all your software on top of that. Now is the time to back things up and prep. for update 4 while you are waiting.

Yeah, that's probably not a bad idea at all.

So, do you have that blank volume sitting there waiting for update 4 yet? And don't give me any of that "When it's done" either.

Why yes, as a matter of fact, I do! Umm, does that mean I get it sooner?

You were asked nicely, now less so- take it to a different thread. An OS4 update has zero to do with the Peg or alternative hardware, and there are more appropriate threads for this. If you feel the ruge to start yet another, then do so, but that's enough in this thread.

@Rogue and all

Good morning, everybody I asked somewhere here if it would be wiser
for me to just do a Full Install of Update 4 over Update 3, without
having to format my OS4 partition and setting everything up again?

As i have latest SFS, AHI, drivers, libraries, a fully customized MUI,
BeOS/Zeta-styled Zami, i don't want to risk spending a lot of time
setting everything up again. Therefore i wonder if i just could do
a Full Install of Update 4 over Update 3, and everything will be updated
anyway, and then i can do small settings, right? What do you think?

No need to re-format my OS4-partition or what?

@tonyw

You might be right about this advice, so i'll do that It can be
stretching however, but still safe, as a backup will normally be
done, which i have...

So what i'll do is to do a fresh install by formatting the OS4 partition
and installing a clean Update 4, and copy over the settings from the backed
up Update 3, no problem

@Helgis

Yes, that's OK, but after you make the backup of the UPD3 installation, make it bootable and boot into it to make sure it's all OK. You don't want to find out later that the backup was interrupted and is incomplete !

@Rogue: what kind of motivation do you see ? The fact that I have (had) some interest in MorphOS prevents me from having an open talk here ? Hopefully, not every users of each platform are die-hard fans/defenders of the platform... Most of them are, for sure, but not every.

Again, this post has nothing at all to do with MorphOS/Peg/Whatever. There is *nothing more* to see than what I said: the "when it's done" thing is bad and I don't find it respectfull of users. Period.

Before you ask, what I find more honest is what you said later: "Alright, here you have it: "It's delayed"."

Fair, honest.

Leo.

@Leo

The use of the term "when its done" was coined ages ago and has become a joke phrase to use when people start asking for the release date etc.

We all know the reason for the delay and the decision for the current A1 users to receive another update in the meantime is a good gesture.

No-one but you seems to take offense to the use of it, although abviously things have changed since its original reason for use, I think your nit picking and all I can suggest to you is get over it and move on.

Thats the end of it, your arguing for nothing.
