The question was not about DOpus but OS4 pre#4. So is full 64bit support included for all kinds of applications? Does it work in general or do apps have to be changed for benefitting by it? DOpus was just an example for any filemanager, replace the word by any other filemanager's name you want which might not have hard-coded limitations. |

In a listview. Column widths can be resized in realtime.
Load up Unarc, pop an archive in & change the size of the filename column to see this in action (It seems to have a high priority though. Doing this stops AmigaAmp playing).

>* Support large files.. Has anyone tested this yet?
I tryed to download a big file using FTP, result:
Original file (On a Windows XP machine):
-rw-r--r-- 1 ftp ftp 4699999744 Feb 07 00:50 backup2.tib
On my A1 the file is:
backup2.tib 4294967244 ----rw-d Aujourd'hui 12:55:30
The transfert stop there... this is my secon attemp, the first one was made with AmiFTP and same result.
Bye!
PS: Forgot to tell you that with Update 3 the transfert ended with a DH3: Disk Full Error which was not true.

I tryed to download a big file using FTP, result: | To which file system? None of the AmigaOS4 file systems (FFS2, CrossDOSFileSystem and ram-handler) supports files > 4 GB - 2 bytes. Did you write your own one? If yes you did something wrong |

| @wegster I guess my favorite toy right now is running WB in 1024x768 then cranking up Bars&Pipes in 800x600, going back and starting Dopus in 1024x768 and just flipping and shoving things around and watching the resolutions change. Zaowee. |

Hi,
I'm using SmartFileSystem 1.252...
I thought that "Support large files." was for file bigger than 4Gb, so the limit in fact is exactly where my download stop?
Thank you.

The "Support large files." is in dos.library only. It doesn't help (much) that dos.library supports 64-bit file i/o if the underlying filesystem doesn't, and neither FFS nor SFS does this as far as I know...
The fact that dos.library now has support for packets for reading/writing to files larger than 4GB is a good thing, though, in that it makes it now possible to write a filesystem that supports this... Last edited by salass00 on 11-Feb-2006 at 08:28 PM.

Using the classic dos.library API to seek in a file you were limited to 2GB because the seek offset is a signed 32-bit integer. With the new DOS functions applications can use 64-bit values so the upper limit is no longer caused by the interfaces to applications, but by the filesystem. You also get an improvement with SFS, because files up to 4GB will correctly work now, whereas with the old API you have problems accessing files above 2GB. I have already added support to DvPlayer and I can now correctly play bigger 2-4GB movies on an SFS partition and seek into them without problems, if the upper file size limit in the filesystem is increased then it'll work with even bigger files. The upcoming update of DvPlayer will be 64-bit. |

Adding support for files > 4 GB to the current AmigaOS4 file systems doesn't make much sense: - The address space of AmigaOS is limited to 2 GB, a ram-handler which supports files > 4 GB doesn't make any sense - AFAIK FAT (CrossDOSFileSystem) doesn't support files > 4 GB. - FFS would have to be changed to support files > 4 GB, but as it's hardly usable for files > 4 MB using it for files > 4 GB would be a pain
I don't know if there are any 3rd party m68k AmigaOS file systems which support files > 4 GB, but using an emulated m68k file system would be too slow anyway. AFAIK SFS is the only AmigaOS4 PPC native file system currently (except for the AmigaOS4 ones of course), but since there seems to be next to no interest in it anymore I only do bugfixes and small improvements which don't require changing it's structures, but no changes which make it incompatible to the current SFS. Adding support for files > 4 GB would be very easy, and for files which are not "too large" (up to 20 or 50 GB maybe) it should even be fast enough, but that would require new, incompatible SFS structures.

You can't test long file support until a 64bit filesystem is created. DOS now has the features to support long file names, but without a filesystem, you still can't create > 2 (or sometimes 4) Gb files. _________________ Playstation Network ID: xeron6 |

Yep, I'm aware of this, but it's worth pointing out explictly. We have no largefile capable filesystem yet.

No >4GB yet.. but it's also worth mentioning that SFS handles upto 4GB files and FFS will not (max 2GB files).

| If Amiga is to do a comback into the multimedia market a large file filesystem is a must really.

I beg to differ. I updated the code to handle files larger than 2GBytes. Not that it does much good, owing to the fact that the file system data structures FFS uses are not really up to the task: the large the files, the slower it becomes to access the data. It just does not scale particularly well with such large files. |

Thanks, that cleared it up. So we want SFS2 that can handle bigger files for the next few years |

As long as "we" is only 2 AmigaOS4 users there wont be a 64 bit SFS2 from me. If there would have been more donations for SFS I would have created a 64 bit SFS2 already which could be used now for files > 4 GB, until there is a better 64 bit file system for AmigaOS4. Currently I'm only doing bugfixes and small improvements which don't need any incompatible changes to the SFS structures, but I wont add any new features to SFS. |

I have a feeling that "we" is quite a few more than 2 AmigaOS4 users. I know I use it on all my partitions as its faster and I got sick of having to revalidate my FFS partitions every time something crashed while IBrowse, Samba or something else were writing to disk. However, I've never seen the donate to support SFS button (until now).
@all If you use SFS and want large-file support, you can let Joerg know by showing your appreciation of SFS here. It's important that programmers know that their work is being used. Otherwise they will lose motivation to continue improving their programs.
