@freaks

Hyperion probably has plans for a much better FS than FFS (not that hard given how old FFS is), but considering the amount of other stuff they want to add to OS4 and the very limited number of people they have working on it, I think it's safe to say that for the foreseeable future SFS is going to be the "unofficial official" filesystem for OS4.

SFS takes care of all the partitions also on my A1
I personally don't need 64-bit files, but many thanks fly to joerg and all involved anyway

Please,

If you'll ever get the new SFS, you won't be able to boot from it anymore, as Joerg said that a new version would be incompatible with the old one. Hence the SLB wouldn't work anymore.

As a workaround you could always have the old SFS on your bootpartition and the new on all the others.

Many thanks to the 4 donators! An initial version of SFS with large file support is now available on the SFS homepage. There are probably still bugs left in the large file support, but developers can now start adding support for files > 4 GB to their applications and test them with this SFS version.

@joerg

eh, cool, thanks

Stating from your webpage "it doesn't support SFS1.x partitions"
Hmm, will SFS2.x ever be the "official" successor of SFS1.x, with
backwards-compatibility?

BTW: I dunno what i'm doing wrong, but all of your tools cannot find my device
"sii0680ide.device"?

@all

Uhh 64bit file size is not needed to burn DVD's
I burnt a DVD on my AmigaOne the other day no problem.
I burn DVDs on win 98se no problem.
The only downside of the system is you can't store DVD ISO on you HD why you would want to do that is beyond me.

DVD movies are not one big file.

BTW with XP pro if your DVD movie file is bigger than 2 gig.
NERO showtime, Win Media player ten, ATI DVD player will skip over then end of the file.

In my opinion a port of something like ReiserFS to OS4 would be quite useful. Perhaps this is something that Hyperion should support officially. It would be a shame to write yet-another-file-system from scratch when there are some really nice open-source examples out there already.

Similar idea to how they have implemented the new memory management model - didn't reinvent the wheel, just adapted a great implementation idea.

Having said that, I will be making a donation to the SFS authors as well.
(The site appears to be down right now??) sfs.a1k.org?

Has anyone thought of using partitioned files. That is where a file is broken up into several files, but act as one file. Would that be feasable. In addition, they can help file performance as well, because you only need to go the the partition with the data you need. We have Midrange computers at work that only have a limit of 2 Gbyte. So I think 4 Gb should be enough. However, adding the ability for partitioned files would be a means to stretch out the bounderies if needed.

True you can burn DVDs using on-the-fly image creation. But if you wanted to burn say a DVD from a Linux distro, you'd still be stuck as you couldn't store the image on your computer. Likewise, if you want to create a DVD ISO for distribution over the internet, your still stuck.

Sounds like those media players don't support >2Gig files. While most DVDs aren't going to go past this limit. Media files are only going to get bigger (particularly when we start wacthing HDTV resolution media files) so assuming no-one is going to create larger files is only going to cause trouble.

@Hans

I agree, I dunno if I need a file system capable of supporting files that big, the fact it didn't I found slightly embrassing, in a we're not as good as NTFS!

Remember the good old days of Windows 8.3 files, when we had... sorry, drifting off to the past then!

@Edit-Chick

Just the same... chunks of max. 2GB. Most authoring software works this way, if the FS is not capable handling larger files. No big magic done for this...
