well I still have problems with the audio output on my uA1-c the left speaker crackles all the time. just out of curosity would buying a soundblaster card fix this problem?? what audio cards are people running that work 100%. (PCI model)

or would connecting to the onboard audio out pins and use the front earphone socket work
if the latter can someone send me a link to an image of the motherboard with pin descriptions

other wise everything is working better since update 4

thanks

I never liked the sound off the rear connectors so I use the line-out from the front connector. My case has a mic-in that I re-wired to the line-in & a second that was already wired for line-out. Grab the micro pdf handbook. Page 12 shows the sound port location & page 14, the pin-out.

There must be something wrong with your hardware. I have a µA1-C which
is connected with the rear connectors and I have no crackles in either speaker.
Not since the latest driver update fron DaveAE anyway.
Check that you have the latest AHI and CMI8738 driver installed. And also the correct
settings in AHI prefs.

The sound quality which Sundown refers to I have no clue about though, as I have
never tested the front connectors. But it would be simple, just pluging in the cable
to the front But it would be really strange if it would be the case.

@Samwel

The rear connectors are for a 5:1 sound system. I'm using a powered speaker set with a single stereo jack. When I first got the micro, I tried the rear connections, but the audio sounded "dirty", no crackling, but not clean. The audio seems cleaner using the front connector. The rear connectors are hardwired & the front connectors are wired to the sound header port so they are different outputs. If you have L & R front speakers, L & R rear speakers, & a subwoofer, then you use the rear outputs. If you only have L & R front speakers & a subwoofer, then the front output is best.

@aldur

I have exactly the same problem, crackling in left speaker. This is with either front or rear jack, on my microA1. I did NOT have this problem before update 4, so it is unlikely to be purely a hardware problem. The crackling sounds very much like the crackling I used to have on bootup when I started mixer manually, i.e. the sound of something being unitialized. Why only the left speaker, I do not know.

I may try out the update 3 audio drivers just to verify that my recollection is correct, or I may not get around to it. I noticed that audio problems are mentioned in "The Big Thread of Update 4 Issues," but no solution was posted there.

Hope this helps, at least a little!

@thread

Those of you having "crackling sound" problem:
Do you get "crackling" when running -only- your audio player?
Or, are you getting this while running other programs simultaneously with your
audio player of choice? If so, what programs are you running?

Before getting to the bottom of this problem by searching for bugs we should all
compare versions of the installed drivers.

CMI8738 driver: v5.12 (for µA1-C)
AHI package v6.2 (don't remember the exact ahi.device version)
Mixer v1.17

After this has been checked users must see to it that Mixer is run at start up.
Preferably in WBStartup.
Also that AHI prefs is set up correctly. Volumes should be set to 0dB, not above.

Agreed (even if Davy and I have posted this n^nth times.
ok. For the Micro A1-C -only-:

cmi8738.audio version 5.12 in SYS:devs/AHI
ahi.device version 6.6 in SYS:devs
device.audio version 6.2 in SYS:devs/AHI
cmi8738 (no version #) in SYS:devs/AudioModes
device (no version #) in SYS:devs/AudioModes

mixer version 1.17 in SYS:WBStartup (although Davy has posted it is not needed
and he does not use it. And I posted that it is useful if you are using PlayCD)
My active tooltypes for mixer:
CX_PRIORITY=2
CX_POPUP=NO
CX_POPKEY=alt f8
My sliders when running mixer:
1-top
2-top
3-bottom
4-bottom
5-bottom
6-bottom
7-top
cycle gadget set to "cmi8738"

Most recent discussion on mixer March 22-30, 2006 here.

Yes. Quote from Davy:
Quote:
First of all, if you put any slider above 0dB, you can get distortion, it's as simple as that.

AHIprefs:
Music Unit:CMI8738:HIFI 16 bit stereo ++
Frequency:44100 Hz
Volume:+0.0 db
Line out:Output (NOT Digital Out)

Unit#0:Duplicate of settings in Music Unit
Channels:32

Please add or correct me on the above.

Ok, if it's always there, even if you're not playing it's not related to AHI settings, although you should really use version 5.12 anyway.
I wonder if it happens when you don't run Mixer during start-up and do a cold boot, since then, the driver hasn't initialized or powered up the chip.

I've uploaded cmi driver 5.16 to OS4depot by the way. It mutes FM output, perhaps it helps. It also works with mono modes.

@DaveAE

My version number, and in fact my entire installation is identical to that of Number 6. Same version numbers, settings, micro-A1, everything.

Also, my experience is like Aldur's: the crackling is always present, even when nothing but the plain OS is running. Previous to update 4, I heard similar crackling briefly during bootup, but it was cut off when my user-startup script got to the line
mixer SETLEVELS
which I presume triggered the initialization of the sound chip. After update 4, I get crackling during bootup and it is not shut off by invoking mixer.

I have noticed two further things:

1: when I use AHI prefs to select Music Unit, the crackling volume goes way down (but not completely off), and if I play a test sound, I can hear the sound at a normal level, with weak crackling in the background. If I select Unit 0, the crackling volume is much louder, but the test sound volume is the same, so the crackling is now louder than the test sound. This is with the same settings in both Music Unit and Unit 0. If I save the settings with Music Unit selected, the crackling remains quiet until I try to use any other program that involves sound (mixer, any sound player). These bring the crackling back up to full volume (probably by using Unit 0).

2: on the rear audio connector, but not on the front one, moving the External Line In slider in mixer increases the volume of the crackling, and somewhat changes its quality, when when the slider gets near the top. For the first 80% of the way, there is no change, but when the slider gets into the top 20% or so, the volume of the crackling gets noticably louder very fast, so that when the slider reaches the top, the crackling is more than twice as loud as normal. Again, this has NO effect with the front audio connectors.

I will try the newer CMI driver and report any changes. I hope this information is helpful to you.

Replying to myself: I just tried CMI8738.audio version 5.16. This works just great -- all problems solved, no crackling at all.

Thank you very much!

I'm wondering if this is part of the irq problem. In case you missed it, read this post #184 http://tinyurl.com/rcctc by stedy.

Are these two part of a package on OS4 Depot? I found them in the appropriate drawers on the back-up CD I made of my old AmigaOS 4.0 pre-release update #3 system, just before I installed update #4. I'm sure I downloaded them once before long after I installed update #3.

I am using a A1 XE G4 overclocked to 800 Voodoo3
The sound is perfect in everything, but DVPlayer and MPlayer. The movies are a little stilted and there is crackling. I would think that there is a drain on the CPU by these programs and that is the crackle? I don't have a lot running in the background. My workbench is a tiled small .jpg
I have all the latest versions installed including ahidevice 6.7

Any suggestions?
