@jorit

Look on the bright side Evert.
At least -this- month no one is referring to you as "Mr. Carlton" (yet).

So it took two months to move to a new CMS (which is 'apache'). ?

TWO MONTHS for a website consisting of just a few pages, viewed by (frankly) just a few people.

Forget the dynamicism I could've cached the pages to static HTML and stuck them on a webserver in 10 minutes.

two MONTHS?

If that's a genuine statement then.... well... I'm gobsmacked

@wegster

IIRC, the CMS used before was Mambo or Joomla. I'd be (slightly) curious to know what they are using now. I guess an effort was made to make the pages Amiga-browser compatible, judging from the small CSS file and lots of HTML tags in the pages.

Perhaps there's a big push to get OS4 *really* finished, in time for Xmas as they have stated? There have apparently been massively improving certain subsystems, like memory, and I have heard that these had already resulted in big speed improvements...

Totally unsubstantiated speculation: Perhaps they're working on an Xgl-like make-over for Intuition? We already have screen-dragging, which is a 2D equivalent of that 3D-cube desktop thing.

I really don't go looking to stir things up, but the site's URLs suggest Mambo is being used. I thought that was the CMS before the site's downtime (or was it Joomla, the Mambo fork?). I guess jorit can set me straight on this. Or not -- we're really dealing with trivia here.

@ChrisH

Well that would be cool. I use the Xorg-air, very simiar to Xgl, and Compiz on my laptop and it is very funky.

But given it's still not mainstream and has been developed by Novell and co. for years then perhaps it's a bit much to expect from Intuition!

Probably booze-related. I could have sworn I *didn't* reply to this thread last night and yet I see my comments - and I can put that down to outrageous alcohol comsumption ;)

Yes, probably unlike to appear before OS4.1 at the earliest, if ever. For a start they'd need to finish their OpenGL replacement for Warp3D, so that they had a long-lasting foundation upon which to do funky things with window using 3D hardware.

This was merely wishful thinking, simply because I only just got SLED 10 (SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop) installed (thanks Linux Format!), and was amazed at how much of a difference Xgl effects made to the feel of the desktop. I'm now fairly well practiced at installing NVidia drivers from the console, since none of the Linux distros actually like my PCIe GeForce 6800 . Oh, and I used Gnome for the first time too, and it's soooo much better than KDE that it's ridiculous. If only WINE was more mature, I would happily dump Windows entirely.

@ChrisH

i've opted to use VMWare-Server to run Windows virtualised under LInux for those windows apps that don't have suitable alternatives under Linux.

VMWare-Server is not quite as good as VMware-workstation in terms of graphics speed but it has the advantage of being free! Regardless it's much more usable that Qemu. The linux crowd generally moan about it not being open-source but that doesn't really bother me.

As a result no more dual booting - windows regulated to a "mere" 4gb hard file for use in emergencies

Edit: added link
