| I made a list of some of the possible hardware which may come for OS4 in the near future (e.g. next 6 months) with some very rough estimated prices based on currently available pricing information. The idea is to see which class of hardware people would actually buy, considering their prices. |

| Voted for 2 systems.
As i want a 800mhz+ for normal desktop use, and a lowend fast booting board for a possible HTPC system setup.

the efika hasnt even been remotely suggested that it will ever run os4. now the others are far from certain, sure, and i know never say never, but isnt it stretching it a bit? _________________

That prices are incredible high. I would prefer a PSX3.
I can't see the need of making our own hardware if our hardware doesn't provide any advantage.
BTW, I don't see dual 970MP machines in the list.
Why avoid using 970MP/FX/GX cpus?
To quote the link I post above: "A 970GX 1.6 GHz is tagged with a very decent $137.50 while a MPC7448 1.6 GHz comes in for a hardly comprehensible $348.20 - the same price as a Dual-Core 2.5 GHz 970MP."
IMHO there's no sense in using a G4 when G5s are *much cheaper*
IBM Northbridges are well tested.
IMHO the only practical cpus would be:
-5200/400Mhz
-MPC8641
-970FX
I would rule out old G3s and old G4s. And of course I would never try to use an L2 cache-less cpu as desktop (or try to sell it as a desktop machine for 500Euros), regardless of the clock frequency.
FYI: pegasos2 with a G4/1Ghz costs 415euros without VAT. Last edited by Crumb on 30-Oct-2006 at 11:42 AM.

Genesi mentioned that they contacted Amiga Inc. about licensing, and ACK's PV-TL also uses the PPC405, so that very low-end should be included in the poll. The point of the poll is to be a guide to the hardware companies so they can see which class of hardware would be the most successful.
@poweramiga2002
OS4 has no multi-CPU support and is not likely to have it in the near future due to the restrictions of the AmigaOS design and also there has been no such hardware project announced, therefore it makes no sense to include it in the poll.

OK but I can only include hardware in the poll which has a reasonable chance of making it to OS4. Also I have reached the maximum number of options in the poll :/

That would still be considerably more with OS4, RAM, Gfxcard and VAT included. But it's a discontinued product (no longer manufactured AFAIK) so it's no wonder you can pick up the remaining stock very cheap now. |

Then I hope you voted for G4-class hardware, which is what Panda is. |

I would buy something in the ballpark of PPC440/667 Mhz for a maximum of 300 EUR with OS4. That would still be a price which I could "justify" only for the fun of it and that would still make sense for the geek/retro/bedroom-coder/GP2X-crowd.
Efika/Powervixxen LT *might* be an alternative, but I don't get my hopes up (probably no MOS/OS4 on Efika; Adam's last statements regarding PV LT not extremely encouraging either & only let-downs so far).
The longer it takes, the less I am willing to spend a fortune for the insanity of running OS4 on slow custom hardware. OS4/PPC already was a tiny niche "market", but with these prices and delays, we are on the best way to kill it completely. |

| I wil never buy any new AOS4.0 hardware... I will use my microAone until it breaks. And I will not buy any new amiga custom hardware after that.
I would buy a AOS made for standard x86 platform though. Last edited by zmurf on 30-Oct-2006 at 12:27 PM. Last edited by zmurf on 30-Oct-2006 at 12:24 PM.

| I want an Amiga that will compete with my other computers. So that being said they should try to make a G5 Amiga or cross over to the dark side. _________________ Operating Systems: AROS (hosted through Linux) Ubuntu 7.10 Palm 3.5.3 Computers: Cymru |

I selected PPC440@800-1000 and G4 1.0-1.2Ghz because currently I already have a A1XEG4@800 and I don't see myself returning to something slower. But in fact any hardware that could run OS4 would be OK. I may also have selected a slower one but only if conditionned in a laptop form...
Of course I will buy only one of those, and depending on my financial state and on the availability I may also upgrade my XE CPU module to something better (but only if it really has some obvious impact on the usage : i.e. reduced compilation time). _________________ AOS 4.1 : I dream it, Hyperion did it ! Now dreaming AOS 4.2... Thank you to all devs involved for this great job ! |

As a collector of Amiga computer's naturally I had to vote for all possible models you listed.
To be honest though my first choice would be the highest spec model that was available (irrespective of cost).

Genesi mention a lot of things i was really talking about the boards that have been mentioned by people from amiga inc, and hyperion. the pvLT is a addon board anyway so is quite different from the efika.
no problem with the power ratings of the boards in the list, just dont want to get peoples hopes up._________________

| @COBRA I would initialy buy any of the first 4 options. Price comes before performance. (Nothing to run on OS4 that needs the speed yet so)
But as i alreday have OS4 hw (BPPC) waitng for OS4 to be released i will without doub't buy that first i think. |

i agree, although personally i feel whatever is the cheapest will get my vote, as all of the above can do what is needed sw wise at the moment on os4. oviously devs will need the fastest available, but end users just want stuff that works for a cheap price!
its cart before the horse time i feel, as cheapness can only come with mass orders, and i mean 10,000 at least._________________
