|
That's good I do realize there are other producers as I listed the 2 main producers. Sony wants 6 million PS3s by March. Being about 1 million shipped they need to make about 1 million per month. Sharp would be about 1/10th of Sony's need. It didn't say how fast or how far production could be expanded. I think for the next 6 months we'll see lots of PS3s but few stand-alone and few PC burners. I bet by Christmas next year prices drop. Unlikely into DVD burner range but significantly down afterall there's lots of room to go down there.
Blu-Ray for the PC isn't attractive currently as a storage medium due the high prices. 1 year may well make a difference. |

Won't be a problem. It's time to dump FMV for good and HD-DVD has no storage issues with regards to movies.

FMV does need to go. But, how else will I go to the bathroom in a middle of the game not that dastertly pause button.
Resistance Fall of Man (there's some decimals in there) 2GB Audio (600MB is English) 6GB Game 7GB FMV 2GB Padding
This game could easily fit on a single DVD by scrapping the FMV. One may argue that having all 3 regions on 1 disc is cheaper. But really is it? A Dual Layer DVD is $2 so 3, one for each region, is $6. 1 Single Layer Blu-Ray is $20. You could easily make 1 box and include all 3 if you were to lazy to include just that 1 region. But, there'd be no disc swapping needed. NOTE: Yes I know bulk orders for Blu-Ray don't cost $20 each and are cheaper. But, media is still more then 3x the cost of a DVD.
These first generation games typically do not have the compactness of tight coding nor compressed to levels that later generation are. Sony's games need Blu-Ray claim is more so to hide their want to have the PS3 be the blu-ray trojan horse plan.
I agree FFXII was pretty but still my vote FMV should go the way of automobile T-Tops. |

It looks like Sony has now sold at least 750,000 PS3s worldwide., they are selling them as fast as they can ship. Sony still targets 2 Million units shipped for 2006, it will be interesting to see and if they come close, that would be quite a performance! |

Of course they're selling every machine they can ship. This is the launch window.
Remember that Sony's "sold" number is usually actually "shipped from factory" and not "into retail" or "sold to consumers".
As for quite a performance... Wii has sold 2 million already and been on the market for a shorter period of tme. What would be so spectacular about it exactly? |

Yes, Nintendo is also showing good performance in general, also with regard to the Nintendo DS and Gameboy Advance and Sony also with regard to the PSP and PS2. Why I think shipping 2 million PS3s would be such an amazing performance by year's end? There's less than 2 weeks left and the PS3 is a lot more complex than the Wii or XBox 360 are and this would mean 2+ million Blu-ray drives on the market for 2006 already! Yay now you can play 2D open source games with a Wiimote. There are drivers out for OS X and Windows too btw. |

Yeah.. everything you can already run on the computers you already have. That's linux for you. What else is new? Seriously... Linux is just linux regardless of what hardware it runs on. It's more practical to run it on x86 because of binaries and in some cases hardware acceleration. |

That must be the most confusing and non-tutorial-esque tutorial I've ever seen.
Unless I'm missing something it's basically just saying "convert video using this tool, transfer it and play it" - but it does so in a very confusing way.

Or UAE!
But Linux is Linux if you can run it on one platform you can run it on others. Now I'm a bit confused if your goal was the love of Super Nintendo or MAME that that person would spend $600 on a PS3 to do it. There are used systems which are much lower cost, some even free, which will run those things equally as well. In fact I have a 800Mhz PIII system which I need to get rid of that no one will buy obviously due to it's slowness yet if you want MAME it works wonderfully. |

the PS3 is a lot more complex than the Wii or XBox 360 | You know it is as far as the Cell has 235 Million transistors and the 360s CPU has 165 Million. It's actually quite amazing how similar those 2 systems perform though the 360 having 30% less transistors. |

Also interesting:
Sony Patents Motion Tracking Controller http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=5353
We will likely see a Wii emulator at some point (I just hope this takes long enough to be fully functional until the Wii outsold the GC), like there are GameCube emulators already. IMO the PS3 is powerful enough.
@ BrianK
But you haven't seen the PS3's true potential yet, just like Populous or games before that did not show off the Amiga's true potential, this despite the Amiga was already on the market for many years. Last edited by MikeB on 18-Dec-2006 at 07:24 PM.

Yeah that'll be interesting not only the question is did the Wii come first is involved. But, Microsoft shipped a motion tracking controller for the PC years ago. The patent office may award it to them but surely if Sony tried to enforce it they'd lose as they simply aren't the first.
Quote: We haven't seen the full use of any console yet. Take the 360 the developers for Oblivion, PGR3, and GoW all said they can do things differently and better the next time aroun. I do agree the PS3 has lots of potential. |

Yeah, it's really kind of funny how they can't seem to get any ideas of their own these days isn't it? They're becoming the Windows of consoles. "Oh, look... we gotta have that too". |

Good news, VF5 in time for European launch!

Complementing the North American release of the latest in this long-running fighting franchise, SEGA Europe has confirmed that Virtua Fighter 5 will be a launch title for the PS3 in Europe."

Which would be fine if they'd done it on the smart things, like, Oh, I dunno, force feedback? The controller may prove to be interesting...it WILL be interesting to compare it to the Wii's, certainly, and to see what may come of it's use in games.
If no one develops a decent steering wheel for PS3 _with_ force feedback, however, I'll have to find a different way to play Gran Turismo..
