So let's say we have SAM and OS 4.0, what have we got that is OS4 native or adapted, available, competitive and equal to or better than other Operating Systems (OS X, Windows XP/Vista, Linux) applications?

What's their status, work in progress, complete, abandoned?

Fill in the spaces and add other categories if you like.

2D Graphics?

3D Modelling?

Internet Browser?

Email program?

Word Processor?

Games? (ported and OS4 specific)

Audio/Sound?

Printing?

TV Card?

DVD-CD burning software?

Emulation?

Programming?

Internet Security?

Networking/Server?

Scanner software?

Webcam software?

IRC?

@TheDaddy

I'll have a go:

2D Graphics?
- Nothing native, but ImageFX works fine.

3D Modelling?
- Nothing native. Real3D was going to be ported, but we haven't heard anything

Internet Browser?
- Aweb is native, but dated
- Ibrowse 2.4 works, but is dated
- Ibrowse 3.0 in the works
- The bounty for a Sputnik port has been reached, now it's up to Sputnik's author
- Firefox compiles for Cygnix, but doesn't startup (by afxgroup)
- afxgroup is also porting some SDL-based browser whose name I can't remember

Email program?
- Nothing native AFAIK, there's SimpleMail and YAM

Word Processor?
- Desler is working on Cinnamon writer, a very basic alpha was released months ago

Games? (ported and OS4 specific)
- A whole load of ports by Spotup. I'm not going to list them; look them up yourself
- AmiJeweled, not native, but Amiga OS specific, and fun

Audio/Sound?
- HDRec?
- Horny for midi
- Tunenet
- Can't remember the rest

Printing?
- Not much at the moment, we have some drivers for older printers. Any printer supporting postscript should work

TV Card?
- Spirantho is working on AmiTV, but really needs a new SDK

DVD-CD burning software?
- FryingPan (haven't seen any updates for a while)
- AmiDVD

Emulation?
- EUAE
- A Basilisk2 port is in the works
- some others I can't remember

Programming?
- gcc
- Ranger, scout and snoopy for diagnostics
- The GrimReaper provides pretty extensive debugging information and being able to dump the debug log to disk even after a system crash, is a great tool
- Jamie Kreuger is still working on his Advanced Visual Developer (AVD) suite and its free version, FreeAVD
- There is a half done Torque game engine port somewhere, but we really need MESA (hardware accelerated) before this is likely to be finished

Internet Security?

Networking/Server?
- We have Apache, but no MySQL daemon
- PFTP client, but no native FTP server at the moment

Now for some extras:
Presentation Software
- Hollywood

Movie playback
- DvPlayer
- MPlayer

Video Editing
- Nothing at the moment. I'm going to be working on this one, but it's going to take a long while.
- We don't even have a firewire stack, so if a developer is looking for a good projects, this is one worth considering. USB 2.0, would also be helpful

Spreadsheet
- Ignition, not sure what state it's in

Anything else?

Hans

It's less desperate than I thought! Brilliant!

>>Audio/Sound?
- HDRec?
- Horny for midi
- Tunenet
- Can't remember the rest

Anything like Octamed or Fruity Loops (I have used this on the pc and it's very good)?

>>Emulation?
- EUAE
- A Basilisk2 port is in the works

PS1/PS2, N64, C64, Spectrum other classic machines?

>>Internet Security?

Antivirus/Firewalls?

>>Movie playback
- DvPlayer
- MPlayer

Are these able to play pretty much anything like for example Mediaplayer or Realplayer?

Thank you!

@TheDaddy

The most interesting fact about Amiga users is that they are constantly
demanding the Amiga should be better than everything else they know.

The "better than MacOSX" department is somewhere else, please ask there.
Did somebody try to sell you OS4? No? So why are you asking? Which answers
do you expect?

OS4 is not better or worse, its different. E.g. its
"Internet Security" applications cant be compared with those of other OSes,
it has none of them and it doesnt need any of them yet because no malware
programmer seems to be interested yet to attack OS4. Dont tell me you didnt
know that with that number of posts you made here already, so again, what
is the goal of your question?

Spreadsheet?
TurboCalc V5: works flawlessly (for the part of the functionality that I use).

Wordprocessor?
WordWorth V7.01: works near flawless. Some (minor) issues exist.

Come on, IMHO this was nothing serious. To me it looked like a "proof of concept"
and as soon as the author was asked about using an Amiga GUI or an Amiga font
engine he stated that would destroy the portability, be too much work etc, took
his Mac laptop and was not seen again.

So it basically was some "runs everywhere" word processor approach in PRE-alpha
state. Then it makes IMHO much more sense to use AbiWord on Cygnix which probably
has some more features which may even work (never tried it, sorry).

I never said that.

I think you have drunk too much coffee today...and I ask whenever and wherever I like. Without having to ask your permission thank you very much!
Also I am asking because I CAN! Because I want to know the status of Amiga software, what's with you? The answers I have been given by other more helpful people than YOU are excellent! I didn't know that all that software either worked or needed finishing off. I am not expecting any particular answers, have some camomile!

>>OS4 is not better or worse, its different. E.g. its

The minute OS4 becomes more popular you WILL definately see the appearance of malware, spyware, virus so I was interested in knowing if there is a program in the works!

>>Dont tell me you didnt

is the goal of your question?

You are right there, I didn't know! The number of posts means nothing. I don't have OS4 and I needed a summary of the applications I can run on the "forthcoming" machines.

I should have ignored this post!

Those look gorgeous!

I can't believe that a stupid legality is stopping us from enjoying all that on a SAM+OS4.0!

Thanks!

DiscreetFX is working on a deal to bring professional 3D animation and modeling to Amiga OS 4.0. The deal is almost complete and we will announce it when the deal is done.

There's a native port for Milkytracker and heivelytracker on os4depot.
EDIT: Someone else already mentioned these.

IIRC AmiDog's playstation emulator works. I'm not really into emulation, so I can't tell you much.

I don't know about realvideo, but the unreleased version of DvPlayer can play WMVs. MPlayer can handle quicktime as well.

I was in a hurry when I wrote that. It was indeed a proof of concept, and only handled very basic RTF files. Hence the very basic alpha. IIRC, he didn't want to use a native GUI because he was going away for a while, and hence, could only develop on his Mac laptop. Last time I asked him about it he said that he was still working on it, but that he probably wouldn't release an update at the end of summer (see here). I wouldn't dismiss Cinnamon writer just yet; don't expect it to be usable any time soon though.
