In my opinion it's pretty sad if this book won't get published just because of the action of a single anonymous asshole .

I've already signed the petiition even though I doubt it will have any effect on the author's decision.

@salass00

I'd almost forgotten about this.

True, he sounded very resolute. However, that was in 2008. There are almost 300 signatures on that petition now.

AndreasM, any news?

Hans

Any chance the author would sell the book, not in the way he had at oen time planned, but to sell out completely to a new owner who could then publish it? Perhaps a bounty or something could raise the runds and then open it, or...

@billt

It's unlikely that he'd sell outright. He insisted that it had to be printed using an offset printing press, and not on laser printers. The problem is that this is only possible if a certain volume can be reached, and he felt that a pirate copy of the old book via bittorrent killed the market. Personally, I think that the extra information in the new book would be more than worth getting.

I see no problem with "the torrent issue", cos those who wanted to buy it would have bought it anyway (goddamit it would be a gem if printed), the case of the Amiga printed magazines shows that the statement is true cos magazines are being bought by the most dedicated fans, despite the fact that sooner or later the stuff is available online for free.

@Darth_X

BIG OT:
sorry Darth_X but I have some kind of a sociological hmm perversion I mean the words have a huge *meaning* to me, I like to nitpick about, to look for some hidden *meanings* and so on:
you didn't write "Things I want to USE/ To PLAY WITH", instead you've written "Things I want to BUY" -this says a lot about our consumer mentality that each of us has: the need to collect or to possess, which is the foremost need, not always conscious. If we satisfy the need of possession, we then play with the tool we have but it's not always the case, sometimes the process of satisfying the need of possession is the goal itself and as I said before: it's not always conscious.
btw. don't take it personal, it's more general observation

I couldn't agree more. Instead of searching for the torrent, I have bought the German version of AGB and read it with pleasure few years ago. I would definitely buy the extended English version once available.

Just FYI, I stopped chasing Ralph about the Amiga Guru Book a couple of years ago, it became increasingly clear from his e-mails that he wasn't interested in finding a publishing solution after the torrent was released. It wasn't about the money for him, it was about a feeling of disrespect, that someone would rip off their work.

Perhaps now that the dust has settled he may reconsider. However, I'll leave it up to someone else to ask him.

Good observation. hehe!

When I say "buy" here, I mean that I want to buy an Amiga Guru book to read and learn more about the Amiga.

Maybe 4 years later things have changed...

Today we can print on demand so it can be done even for low demand.

@elwood

I wrote to him in november - offering to buy the rights for publishing it. He was not interested.

@bitman

Then again, the book is pretty old by now - how much of it still applies for modern AOS, MOS or AROS?

@CodeSmith

The latest AmigaOS 4.x SDK now has pretty much all the information you need to write a filesystem or handler in the form of the dos.dospackets.doc autodoc (I consulted this a lot while porting and converting filesysbox to the new vector port system).

In addition to this it also has a very useful CLI program called FSVPTool which will generate a commented skeleton filesystem source code that can be used as a basis for your filesystem (I used this for my vector port rewrite of XADFileSystem).

@whose

The dospackets documentation is already in the version 53.24 SDK available from hyperion-entertainment.biz and is also available here.

The FSVPTool was also supposed to be made available with the 53.24 SDK but seems to have been left out by mistake.

IMR both Ralphes knew each others well and together they defined the TD64 enhancements, (IMR Babel worked for GVP and Schmidt for P5). Some decisions around PowerUP (use of ELF) where made out between Frank Mariak, Fred Fish and both Ralphes.

Maybe the new Guru Book would have been more about MorphOS than AmigaOS4.
