Anyway I guess you can disable the driver with "floppy.blacklist=yes". |
That's good to know if we need it. I can see an advanced options page come up. |
As far a I know the kernel does not actively probe for a floppy controller (even if it could look for a floppy controller node in the device tree). I had to explicitly include the floppy module in the initramfs for my 2.6.32 kernel to get the driver loaded (I use a "modules" file now to limit the number of modules in the initramfs to keep it small). Thus simply removing it from the initramfs should also do the trick.

Just another patch. |
But a patch for the A1 U-Boot firmware.

I think it may depend on the order of the PCI devices, as the uhci_hcd driver is loaded a long time before the kernel even knows about your card reader. |
THat's a good point. That could be it! |
I'll check again what happens on my A1XE with these drivers. I'll just have to get it running again first (I completely forgot that I used some parts of it to recover my x86 machine ).

I currently have the uhci_hcd driver blacklisted |
Is that for your SE? |
Yes. Unfortunately EHCI doesn't work well with mass storage devices on this machine, too. I still need to test OHCI.

Thanks! It was the most complex installation I ever did. |
And I was so close. |
Well, I had the idea to use a statically linked version of cdebootstrap to install the system. I found a version for Lenny on archive.debian.org and thus had to try it out!

I plan to test a whole install again, but wish you could tell it to procede with "unclean" target and skip the base install. Then I could see if all goes well. |
What do you mean with "unclean" target?

It is hard to work around this. I wonder if ub2lb works the same as SLB. Then a special debug UB2LB coud be created. |
I guess I should try out an older version of the slb_v2. IIRC I have version 1.19 installed at the moment. Which version do you use on your A1?
Quote:
Then I can rebuild the installer with that version for the next release. Hopefully a full one! |
Interestingly the kernel runs a lot more stable on the A1SE (but with PIO mode for IDE and SATA controllers naturally) than on my A1XE. Even direct rendering with the software rasterizer is usable (hardware acceleration also seems to work, but is a little bit unstable)._________________ A1SE: G3@600MHz, 2GB, 1GBit network card A1XE: G4@933MHz, 2GB, refitted AC'97 codec microA1: G3@800MHz, 1GB

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I am trying to get my Desktop Magic program for OS4 completed and have been focusing in that for the past couple of weeks. Here is the situation....just so we are all on the same page.....
With your help and UBOOT setting suggestions, I have been able to access the SATA portion of my VIA multicard (the one that is USB2+SATA+RAID/PATA) when it is plugged into the PCI slot of my micro A1. The RAID part of it still doesn't seem to work, and USB2 still locks up...perhaps we'll get to that later. When I took out the multicard and put in my SIL0680 controller in the single PCI slot of my micro, and took out the SATA UBOOT hacks (necessary when I remove the multicard by the way, or funny things happen), I set up Lenny to boot from my SIL card which has a 160G drive (with my root Lenny partition on it). I have my 80 Gig drive connected to the micros internal IDE bus. My startup parameters for Lenny have NODMA set. But I am unable to see or access the hard drive connected to the internal IDE port of the micro when I boot from the SIL0680 card into Lenny.
You asked for lsmod, and for my dmesg output.
Here is lsmod:

In my dmesg output, you will notice that the codecs for mixer do not seem to work. I installed mixer using apt-get install a long time ago, and it has never worked. However, something it did (I think) caused my sound to work in Lenny because before that sound didn't work at all. Now if I run Rock Dodgers, for example, I hear the sounds from the game. Should I go ahead and uninstall mixer?

At this point, if you have any spare space, you could try to install Squeeze using my beta installer linked to in this thread.
Though it looks like I will need to update the IDE setup as IDE DMA can be disabled but SATA is not covered. |

I did a test. I booted the CD and turned DMA off for all controllers. It worked fine.
But, I think this may be a hardware problem rather than software. I've seen this on my system when my RAM went bad. Have you ever tested it using memtester in a boot shell?
If you can, test another Linux install or kernel. With bad RAM OS4 will happily go along but Linux will get stuck or panic. Check your RAM stick(s) and perhaps reseat them.
Another thing I found is that hooking up a serial terminal and watching the output can get it past and booting. Seems strange but it has worked.
Apart from that cheack against these MD5Sums. The ISO should be ~49MB.

Okay.... What kernel versions are they using?
And perhaps a copy of your bootargs will help.
You could also test booting the install image off you HDD. You can copy the boot/boot.img (IIRC) onto your /boot volume and create a new menu entry to boot it off HDD.
Another thing, how much memory do you have? And what VGA card? |

RAID functionality is usually a software thing on cheap controllers like this and thus will never work (x86 only). PATA naturally is a driver problem, which can be solved later on by an upgrade to a newer kernel version. USB2.0 is another topic: I still puzzle how I can debug this...

Okay. I guess you're using disk labels now so that you can easily move the harddisk(s) around!?

Arrgh! I forgot that the driver for the onboard IDE controller is compiled into the kernel image. So the lsmod output looks okay.

Wait, wait, wait! You set ide=reverse and hde/f=noprobe, thus the primary IDE channel of the onboard IDE controller is never probed for an IDE device. Can you remove the hde/f=noprobe options from the kernel command line and try again?

In my dmesg output, you will notice that the codecs for mixer do not seem to work. |
That's okay, because these messages come from the sound driver for the VIA southbridge, which simply cannot find any AC'97 sound codec. But lsmod output shows that the driver for the uA1's extra sound chip is loaded (snd_cmipci).

I don't think you need it, so you can uninstall it. Just make sure that ALSA is configured to use the snd-cmipci sound driver (which it probably does now). If not, you can run alsaconf to fix this._________________ A1SE: G3@600MHz, 2GB, 1GBit network card A1XE: G4@933MHz, 2GB, refitted AC'97 codec microA1: G3@800MHz, 1GB

hmm, i don't think the problem is the ram...i've 3 linux installation without any problems.. i will try to find a serial cable.. |
That would be helpful!
@Hypex
Would it be possible to add a Debug option to the installer, which adds "debug initcall_debug" options to the kernel command line? That would make it easier to debug lockups like this over a serial cable.

Oh can you send me the initramfs modules for 2.6.32? Thanks.
BTW, can these be extracted from a 2.6.32 boot initramfs?

But what about rescure mode? Surely they would have included a base system check? Seems logical to me. Suppose they would need to extract persomal info entered and then unpack packages but pretend to install them and instead do a file or MD5 check.

Okay I'll somehow squeeze that onto the menu GUI.

Yes, easily. I can just add it to my Debug menu item.

USB2.0 is another topic: I still puzzle how I can debug this. |
Yes, on this PATA/SATA/USB2 combo card you have helped me get the SATA working, USB2 "should" be working but does not, and there is still hope for the PATA portion. Any thoughts you have on the PATA stuff ... let me know. We still do not know if anyone anywhere on this planet has gotten USB2 to work without problems on a micro A1. I have asked on the Hyperion forums and gotten no reply from anyone who has had success. This suggest to me that perhaps the problems encountered by the regular USB I/O are maybe magnified by the USB2 high speed I/O and need special code to work. wish I was a USB expert - I'd dive into this more. Right now its still smoke and mirrors to me.

DOH! That's likely it! I'll check it out when I can pull my son off the Amiga - it is his favorite computer. Smart boy.

Primary I believe. It is connected through a cable to the 3.5" IDE port on the motherboard (not the 2.5" laptop drive port).
I'll try uninstalling mixer and see what happens.
I'll let you know about removing the IDE noprobes.....

Okay, I took out the noprobes and of course my hde drive is there. I did the following: dd if=/dev/hda2 of=/dev/hde10 and waited about 2 hours, and sure enough, it finished copying my 9.7 Gig hda2 drive to my 11.4 Gig hde10 drive. I had to reboot to get it to show all the data, but I rebooted and mounted hde10 and everything is there. So, I wonder why the dd command failed when I tried it using the SATA drive? I did try it just as shown above..without the bs=4096, and it still locked up after 20 minutes or so. I can't imagine that the SATA driver has some sort of 4 Gig size limitation or anything like that?
Anyway, now I am ready to try to download Hypex's latest linux and try it out...I'll let you know how that goes.

Sure, but you can also extract it from the kernel package. I'll post the list of modules later.

True. At the moment it looks like any bigger data transfer over the PCI bus somehow brings down the northbridge. I planned to play a little bit with the PCI config of the onboard USB 1.1 controllers, just to see, if that makes a difference.

I seriously doubt they implemented any automatic check or recovery of the base system. I only know the recovery mode as a way to manually fix the system, if it was screwed up somehow (for example the bootloader was overwritten by a Windows installation).

Only the upgrade to Debian Squeeze and to a newer kernel. A backport of the newer driver version simply doesn't make sense.

It is surely some PCI transfer problem. But it's hard to debug, if you cannot take a direct look at the PCI bus with something like a logic analyzer. And then the question is, if there is a workaround at all.

I can only advice you to use disk labels, as it makes your live a lot easier, if you have to swap disks around.
Maybe a wiki entry for all these tips and tricks would be a good idea.

Good question! The SATA driver surely has no limitation. It could also be a DMA problem. Did we actually try out PIO mode for the SATA controller?

Okay....started the install of Debian Squeeze using your installer and PPC CD-1.
My setup is as follows: micro A1 512M RAM, sii0680 controller with 160G primary hard drive (seen as hda), DVD/rw slave drive. Internally connected 80 gig IDE drive - connected to micro A1 motherboard as master - seen as hde.
I inserted your installer CD, booted and hit enter to select "boot from siiCD". It booted from your CD - wonderful job! I left all defaults - dma on, etc. The install went well - started up, loaded the kernel...everything good. Was asked to swap the CD, put in the PPC CD-1 - it read it and started the hard drive setup. I selected hde10 - a 11.4 Gig partition for squeeze. Note - this previously had a backup of my Lenny install on it. I did not format it - perhaps I should have? I set it as root, bootable etc. The installer continued and completed the base install! Hurray! It then asked for a mirror - I pointed it to the USA debian mirror - it began installing software packages - great! It first downloaded 1097 files, took about an hour and a half, and then went through 54% on the install.
It locked up at "Preparing Gnome-disk-utility". It simply stayed there, no disk activity, and never came back. I had to do a hard reset (waited several minutes first).
I then tried to use the Rescue Squeezer to continue the install. I booted up (this time with nodma set true) and set hde10 as my root, and tried to tell it to install packages. It came back with a red screen o' death and said "Select and Install Software fails".
How do i proceed? i DO NOT want to download any more files - I have completely used up this months bandwidth limit on my wireless service. All files SHOULD be on my hard drive - it downloaded them all successfully after all.
Where do I go from here?
Thanks! This installer looks great by the way. You have done an excellent job.
