If Yellow Dog could take this server and scale it down by:
- running only 1 CPU (2 cores) (with the option to upgrade later) - removing the expensive SAS and using low-cost SATA This may be a good starting point for a high-end Amiga OS box.
My guess is this will bring the price down to about $1500.
I would hope that given enough encouragement Yellow Dog could give Hyperion a loaner machine for porting. It is in Yellow Dog's best interest after all.

OK, I already have an x86 quad-core sitting on my desk at work, but imagine if it wasn't running Vista. |
Nothing prevents you from instaling a fast OS on that maschine. There are more choices for x86 out there than vista.
About the topic: I don't like the G5 too much. To hot & not the best MHz/computation ratio. There are other ppc out there, which are much, much more interesting._________________ My programs: via.bckrs.de MorphOS user since V0.4 (2001) |

Putting the actual motherboard in a new case with cheaper hardware would take the end price way down. Just think what the HUGE custom case costs!

No, you wouldn't. You'd be putting all your effort into getting some return out of the work you've already done on OS4 for SAM, etc.
The last thing you'd want to do right now is start another long term project with no financial return in the short to medium term.
However, that said, I'd surely love one of these, plus all the OS4 Exec sources...

Not too long ago, there was a thread saying that os4 was succesfully ran on ps3. Was it using only one of the prcessors, or was using more?. Maybe a os4 rework for multicore is already done but not published.

And sooo silent! This is the Amiga way, no doubt. |
The Amiga way is to have superior hardware and software. Making the OS as efficient as possible is crucial but there is no reason restricting it to hardware that is unexpandable and limited by 2001 standards (512MB is killing me). |

It's not a custom case as such, and it's probably cheaper than some of the other E-ATX cases on the market. |

No it does not run on PS3, and I have not see a thread like that. Rouge has been given a PS3 in hopes that he might port OS4 too it, but thats about it.
there are some evidence of development going in the direction of smp in exec.
Semaphore is in exec, Seamphores most be used by all programs or else all sort of things can happen and will happen with shared memory.

The claim that OS4 had been ported to or run on a PS3 is nonsense.

I prefer a micro solution. Then if the precessore and powerful is fine. But physically I prefer solutions such as laptops. perhaps as ibook 12 ", but with powerpc G4 1.5 GHz _________________ my A1="Os4", Sam ="OS4.1" Now Amiga 1200! |

Wow! Must have on of those!
Let's ask Rogue to port OS 4.1 to it! I bet that this box - provided it's fully supported by AmigaOS - would have the potential to revive our platform... I love those specs - I'm going nuts imagining this could be the NextGen hardware for AmigaOS...
How far is AmigaOS away from supporting multiple processor cores?

Well, given the speed of new HW appearing for Amiga since 2000, I'm afraid I won't live long enough to see the 2.5gHz happen... _________________ Ciao

Hmmmm - isn't that a matter of taste? Other people reject designs like of the A500, A600 or A1200 as "looking like toys". Or they want to be able to haevily expand their machines to meet their needs. Or...

I certainly would, as I could afford it - especially, as it has 10 times the power for just the double money of the sam and seems to be more expandable.

Yeah - I seem to remember having read from BillMcEwing that he wanted "to do right what M$ did right".
And I remember that my thoughts exactly were "Is he now going to milk the Amiga community as M$ milks their customewrs?"..._________________ Ciao

Didn't Hyperion always say that porting OS4 to annother CPU was just a one-month-task, or did I get something wrong here?

I have a weak remembrance that he was rather offended, when I mis-spelled his name exactly this way accidently (after always having mis-read it) some years ago..._________________ Ciao
