New beta version released:
cshandley.co.uk/foldersync2/FolderSync2_090604_beta.lha
cshandley.co.uk/foldersync2/FolderSync2_090604_beta.zip
(old links removed)

OS4 version of FolderSync2 was corrupting the LastSync file when used with Windows FolderScan2, which prevented FTP synchronisations from working properly, and maybe other issues too. Surprisingly, this appears to be due to -O2 optimisation of GCC, so for the moment all the executables are UNoptimised. (Hopefully I can eventually find the bit of code that upsets GCC, and work-around it, so that optimisations can be re-enabled.)

P.S. A hint not in the manual: FolderScan2 & FolderSync2 work **much** faster on Windows (like 60 times faster or something stupid) if real-time virus protection is disabled while they scan directories. Please blame MinGW's POSIX implementation :(

New beta version released:
cshandley.co.uk/foldersync2/FolderSync2_090610_beta.lha
cshandley.co.uk/foldersync2/FolderSync2_090610_beta.zip
(old links removed)

Fixed a nasty bug which would corrupt the special LastSync & LastScan files if the user has any files whose name was just a single character. Also, optimisations have been re-enabled for non-Windows executables, since it appears I had been confused & simply forgotten to disable optimisations for the Windows executables (I still need to track-down why there is an optimisation problem with the Windows executable).

The previously mentioned problems were nothing to do with optimisations, but rather it seems that FolderSCAN2's Update mode was simply broken. Now fixed.

EDIT: Re-enabling Windows optimisations caused a problem I had forgotten about, so I have quickly uploaded a new version. Please re-download if you haven't already.

@all
So, has anyone been using FolderSync2 yet? Or tried & failed? It's nearly 2 months since I released the first beta (and 1 month since the last one which was pretty robust), and I could do with some feedback, otherwise I have to assume there is no point in making further public releases...

I should just say, FolderSync2 seems to be working *really* well for me now - it's happily updating 100s of MB (out of several GB in total) between my OS4.1 & my Windows PC via FTP Mount.

And where-as I used to like to carefully check the Proposed Changes of FolderSync*1* before letting it go ahead (in case of the occasional rare problem), I feel very confident that FolderSync2 always knows exactly what it is doing, even in complex situations, and so tend not to bother with more than a quick glance. If I've ever done anything stupid, so far FolderSync2 has noticed it & asked me!

@ChrisH

I commend your work on this application, it seems to be just the thing to keep two databases in sync.

My work on OS4 development requires me to back up regularly from my working partition to others. I don't have any need for two-way synchronisation except when reverting to older source trees for debugging. If I were using two machines for developing, then it would be just the ticket.

As it is, I get by with a simple script that does "copy all clone newer xxx/ yyy/".

You might find RoboCopy interesting.

@NutsAboutAmiga
I've been using RoboCopy for ages! It actually inspired me to add "retry on failure" to FolderSync2, for unreliable network connections. At one point I was using RoboCopy for a lot of stuff on Windows, but now I've mostly switched to FolderSync2...

I should point out however that RoboCopy only goes in a single direction (the equivalent of FolderSync2's backup mode), where-as FolderSync2 normally goes in both directions simultaneously. Microsoft's SyncToy is the only (Windows) program I've seen that is anything like FolderSync2.

I can be interested. Not because I'd find it useful for me (I never used similar applications in 20+ years on different OSes), but because Icaros users may find it a very nice addition. I will gladly add it to Icaros if you like. If it will commercial software, I can place a demo with limited functions. No problem at all.

Please do NOT distribute it (with Icaros or anywhere else), because it is still in beta testing. Wait for an Aminet/OS4Depot release, thanks.

@ChrisH

I'm interested. I use a similar PC program, FolderMatch, to keep 4 PC's in sync. When will it be available for download / purchase?

The beta version is *already* available for download, see post #48:
http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic_id=28457&forum=32&start=40&viewmode=flat&order=0#517584

IMHO this latest version probably doesn't need the "beta" tag, but I need to polish the documentation.

I kind of object having to post everything in two places, it just gets a nightmare trying for any replies. It's bad enough having to upload to Aminet + OS4Depot.

New beta version released:
http://cshandley.co.uk/foldersync2/FolderSync2_091206_beta.lha
http://cshandley.co.uk/foldersync2/FolderSync2_091206_beta.zip

Changes:
* Directory soft links no-longer causes an error. Note that FolderSync2 never creates soft/hard links, but instead creates real files/directories.
* MorphOS executables do not require IxEmul.

Hi, any updates for FolderSync2 available?
Would be nice if there was a download link on your website. I first went to os4depot, then aminet, your website and finally amigaworld. Luckyly this website has not been hijacked like amigans.net or I would not have found foldersync at all..

Thanks!

@ChrisH

FolderSync2 sunds like a great program, at the moment I either put stuff on a flash drive or email them to myself.

Having the ability to sync over a network would help in developing my software.

Hope you continue to develope
