Well I started working on my own Scanner project last yet.

I made a deal with GuruMeditation where I should make a Scanner 'system' in 1 month.

I put a great deal of hours into it, but sadly I underestimated the size of the project plus I ran into problems, so we agreed to drop the deal.. mostly becoarse I could not give a timeline.

This was what I ended up desiting doing after working on it.

1) There need to be an API so 3th part programs could access any Scanners drivers with ease. I desited to make an Device (devices are good at send/reciving data). This MainDeivce would be my Scanner stack.

The stack has no build in drivers for Scanners so it needed to Load drivers as needed.

I made some API functions where you could scan for available scanners, so you could select the one use needed or use the 'Default'.

2) I own 3 diffrent scanners by now and none one of them follows the offcial usb standand they are vendor specific. So The scanner drivers support is going to be a major job, but I only needed to make one to start with.

3) The 'stack' would be rather useless without atleast one small program too view something. Something very simple would do for a start.

4) and finaly a small prefs program too add/remove and set default scanner.

Now why I'm I talking about scanners? well the job is very simalr it may even be possible join scanners and webcam into one project.

I have about 4-5 diffrent usb WebCams by now and only one of them follows the usb standard, so cams driver is hard too.

its a rather big job that will take time.

But nothing is impossible.

Ok, so I can plug in my Logitech camera and it will magically work ?

Standards are not product of magic (perhaps mass storage standard sounds like magic to you). if your webcam supports UVC standard it will work. The general rule is that if the webcam works with XP-SP3/Vista/7 without specific drivers it will work. But since you are so curious you can plug it in your Deneb... you can buy cheap UVC webcams on dealextreme if it doesn't work.

@RWO

i'm working on scanner system for morphos since a year. I've created scanner frontend SCANdal (quite good :D , written in mui) which is used by many people (which is amazing - it's my first big project). I've also ported betascan system from 68k to morphos (with a geit's help) and nearly done aros port (with a help of deadwood), but i don't have time to finish it. SCANdal itself has os4 support also (should be revised).

Maybe we should think together about joining ours projects ?
my system uses standard amiga #?.devices and Like standard betascan drivers which can use lowlevel communication devices (like scsi.device or symbios.device in morphos). drivers for usb scanners uses direct poseidon calls. I have 14 scanners and ported umax, epson, epson2, gt68xx drivers from SANE to betascan. i have two jobs now and i have very little time for amiga programming, updating SCANdal from time to time and working on plustek driver.

Features:
- Support variuos scanners via Betascan/SANE drivers
- Saving JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PDF, IFF DEEP files, saving DPI information
- Loading images via reggae
- Printing with Turboprint drivers
- Nice context-dependent mouse pointers
- Sketch plugins support, Crop, FlipX, FlipY
- Polish and English docs; German, Polish, English and Russian Locales
- Suports Gamma, Brightness, Source, Contrast, Negative, Preview Mode

I was just wondering what happened to you... =)

I hope you'll find the time to complete your project: modern scanner support is something I really miss in AROS (even more than printing), but don't worry too much about time: since we still lack of a proper image handling application, scanning is not so urgent. But we have a OCR and a word processor, so...

@rwo and @rzookol

It could be verry for all community to have scandal for ALL platforms.

Also verry great to see Rwo and Rzookol working together to make Scandal for all the amigas platforms.

I think a bounty could be open for this project and if rwo and rzookol could work together, I could put a good ammount of money on this project

The explanation is also true for a webcam driver. I could kill to have sabreMSN working with a webcam

@thread

Something like Dynamic Web TWAIN would be cool.

http://www.dynamsoft.com/Products/WebTWAIN_Features.aspx

First we need a TWAIN driver.

TWAIN 1.9 specs
http://www.twain.org/docs/Spec1_9_197.pdf

If we can stream video by a datatype system it would make adding scan/webcam easier.

Another option is to add the codec for MSN video files to ffmpeg or mplayer.

MSN video recorder documents
http://ml20rc.msnfanatic.com/devel.html

or

libmimic
http://packages.gentoo.org/package/media-libs/libmimic

edit:

Just have a look at this : AMC - Amiga Media Center

@paolone

Scandal has some image processing abilities. It has support for Sketch (from morphos 2.0) plugins and select tool for applying them.

http://brain.umcs.lublin.pl/~rzookol/pics/scandal13.png
http://brain.umcs.lublin.pl/~rzookol/pics/scandal20.jpg

plugins are morphos proprietary but some of them can be easily reimplemented.

@Mrodfr

i'm going to Croatia for one week tommorow. When I return i'll prepare SDK package with existing scanner drivers and setup project on sf.net. Me drivers use plain ANSI C + amiga api (OS4 SANE port uses pthread for multithreaded backends which helps porting but i'm thinking about doing it in more elegant form)

ps. i don't know about os4 but some scanners doen't like poseidon :), they doesn't work or the speed is 1 b/s.

@Leo
How can you have software if there is no driver?? You need to first actually support the hardware before you think about making software.
And afaik loads of webcam do work with "generic" drivers.

Again i wonder why you are here?? You hate everything about classic amigaos, you hate everything about OS4.x related hardware, you hate aros and you most likely hate MOS as well. What is the point in staying on this site just to bitch about everything?
But i guess you will avoid that question like always...

@Crumb: my point was that there's no magic indeed. And that talking about a "standard" with WebCams is like talking about standard with USB Modems or Gfx Cards: there's no true standard. Every device (or vendor) comes with a specific driver needed to take advantage of it.

Of course, it should be possible to support the very few devices following the specifications... But I wouldn't call that a standard. Custom webcams *are* standard, and that's the problem.

You are wrong... You cant compare it to a GFX card or even USB modem. Nearly all those needs a specified driver for that certain model of gfx card or modem. This is not true at all with webcams, as alot of them work just fine without some special driver.

I have used plenty of webcams without having to install some specific driver even if the webcam was newer than OS.
