This is the logic behind it. Amiga Inc. have no intention of producing anything, not in a million years. It being incapacity and ineptitude or it being laziness. So what is the quickest thing to make (survive) a couple of bucks? License the name. Along come CUSA who, from my point of view, think on the same lines of Amiga Inc.

And CUSA supportes also feed AmigaInc by licence fees.

Yes, CUSA has actualy made only the C64x case (rest of components are 3rd party) and cannot compare to any software or hardware developer, even small as in Amiga community world, in levels of innovation R&D etc. They just purchased the licence, obtained quantity of x86 hw and pushed as much as they could to mass marketing. In comparison to cars, Fiat 500 new Mini or any new retro model at least has a new car with shell retro look and same new: this is like someone elses car with licenced name sold for much more bucks.

COS has good look and everything already avail - that could be a CUSA motto.
Its free just because of Mint licence and more PR for company.

Some even call it COS V in rememberance to Workbench V abuse, while as cornerstone to some new OS it could be 0.1. in efforts (modding, compiling 3rd party components).

Very nice review And thats all about it. Now we can go round and round with screenshots, nice replacement for Ubuntu that gives a look that CUSA is doing something. Look as usual. Nice strategy of moneymaking, sad there is no limit to Commodore and Amiga name abuse. In reality that could be CommodoreUSA modded Linux distro - or Linux Mint CommodoreUSA edition, just like there should be CommodoreUSA C64x and CommodoreUSA Amiga 1000. But lets exploit retro to the fullest with as little effort as possible!
Money Ah dem God!

P.S. Now really, why giving them any attention at Amiga forums?
That is exactly what they want you to. So will do my best "not to oposse them".
By now, you know them well.

@NutsAboutAmiga

I like linux, and use it a lot, and I love Amiga, and use that a lot.
I also use MacOSX and Windows 7.
MorphOS
Aros
HaikuOS
AmigaOS 4

I love them all, and I actualy thinks that COS is a god linux distro, yes its Linux Mint at its core, and that is great.
Just take it for wat it is, a god linux mint distro.

@metalmac

the problem for me is that they use "Amiga" for their products (that have nothing to do with amiga, for me personal it is a abuse of the name). We should ignore it and stop the threads because there is no real connection. We have no "New Mac..." or "New PC..." threads either and I see no connection between the scene and this company.

"Workbench" is a trademark of Cloanto. That explains why they do not use the name anymore.

Moneymaking is not a bad idea. If the companies/groups that now form the market would concentrate on that instead of the personal fightings and emotions it would mean a big improvement for all of us, because they would propably more open for cooperation.

Why are the two most commented on/ popular threads here CUSA ones and not threads that are actually about the Amiga...

PS: found some new smilies, hope you like em...

@Franko

Commented on and "views" are 2 different things of course.
Plus the start date of one of the threads you refer to was "June, 2011".

If you examine "free for all" views, you'll see threads that have many times the views of CUSA and AmiWest threads combined.
But you have to remember that it's often just a handful of people participating and/or posting and NOT "unique" views.

In short you can manufacture statistics to prove most any point. Heh.

you're right at the beginning, CUSA speak about Amiga Workbench 5 but they changed the name and they present it now more as a C64/Amiga inspired linux distro. So that means they figure out it was not fair to do that with still developped AmigaOS4.
Give them at least this credit, they are not so evil

Ahem... I've said it before but you obviously missed it, so here is THE answer once again...

Cloanto own the Trademark "Workbench"...

http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=4005:3j2ebd.2.14

So that leaves us with the following...

A) CUSA did not apply to Cloanto to negotiate the use of the Trademark "Workbench"

B) CUSA did apply to Cloanto but failed to negotiate the use of the Trademark "Workbench"

C) CUSA were not willing to pay for the use of the Trademark "Workbench"

I seriously doubt they just changed their mind out of respect to the real Amiga community...

But that's just the long established tradition in Amigaland...

Still find it odd why on an Amiga site talking about non Amiga stuff is so "popular"...

They don't hide the fact. They re-evaluated the use of many things based on potential legal implications...something a startup does NOT need to be dealing with.

Interesting to note that the argument/discussion about which game console is/was best had over 200,000 views. So...perhaps this supports the idea that a lot of Amigans are gamers. If so, in lieu of having new games to discuss, they discuss other gaming platforms.

Bit late for that after the 18 months or so of being told by Leo we'd "better get used to it" and "like it"...

I don't believe they re-considered anything, you can believe that if you want to but I believe the truth lies more in the realms of, they couldn't obtain permission from Cloanto or they weren't willing to pay for it...

I like them both, but I'm one of those heretics that liked the Amiga, Atari ST, and Apple II GS back in the 80s. I guess I just like computers

One exception: I really don't like Windows at all. I feel sorry for people who think it's their only viable choice.

@bison

Well Amiga for me is also about AmigaDOS (TRIPOS), Arexx scripts its not just about how it looks.

I get the feeling about Linux distributions are not intended to upgraded, its more like have to uninstall every thing and installer over the old one, or else you stuck in .so hell, there are no clear separation between system and application, you can't reinstall the system, whit out reinstalling the applications, and every time you try to set some ting up you end up doing it from sh/bash shell whit crappy text based editor based on some thing from the 1950's, don't get me wrong Linux does many thing rally rally well, and its not horrible, its just no AmigaOS.

Of course some Linux distributions are easier to upgrade then others.

Please please use Commodore Amiga CUSA forum for this kind of support, since they don`t provide mail or phone technical assistance. But its funny and sad if sound doesn`t work with machines it has been tested on.

Thank you very much.

@NutsAboutAmiga

I'm not really sure what you're on about, but I upgrade my Linux systems with Synaptic. Occasionally I will install something using apt-get -- if I happen to know the package name -- but a text editor is never required, unless something goes terribly wrong. The only time this has happened to me is with Debian unstable, which sort of goes with the territory. Ubuntu and Mint have not been any trouble.

It sounds like maybe you haven't used Linux for a while.
