Must be the first time in history (I mean these recent years) that the CPU can't max out the memory bus. Von Neumann's bottleneck has finally become wider than the bottle itself

What I understood when it was explained to me is that Interleaving memory bus just isn't as effective as doubling the rate. Bit same thing that Raid-0 isn't twice as fast as separate disk

So, now the next interesting question arrises: Will it actually run faster if the L2 cache is disabled? I mean that has now become an unecessary step in the way it seems :)

If it's really faster with L2 disabled then there is something really borked in setup since L2 latency should be MUCH lower.

I don't own this computer, but it will be nice to know what this computer default memory latency is. ie do they recommend CL5 memory module or can it handle lower latency memory module if one is inserted.

Dual channel here on my notebook does have a very small gain in performance.

@pavlor

Heh, I read most of it before I even realized :)

Regarding the topic though, probably the best test we have for the benefit of single vs. dual channel RAM is software rendered wazp3d. It really pushes a CPU and will also utilize whatever bandwidth is available for gfx. This is an area where amithlon is particularly strong as far as Amiga goes, 2nd only to AROS.

Also consider though that ppc hardware isn't powerful enough to really push dual channel memory bandwidth, so practical results there won't properly represent theoretical potential.

Laptop here is Dual Channel, used software to detect if computer is Dual Channel.

Memory performance went up significantly when moving from 4GB to 8GB (800Mhz) DDR2 So-Dimms, but at a cost "latency"

Latency affects Graphics Performance here as 8GB DDR2 So-DIMM kit normally has a latency of 6-6-6-xx. Another step-up in Memory Perfromance will be gained if latency can be improved.

5-5-5-xx timing is not a problem and Memory Modules has passed 4-4-4-xx timings.

It's the laptop BIOS that's preventing me from 4-4-4-xx timing, but I am posting here with 5-4-4-xx timing done via the SPD, hopefully I can find a fix.

5-5-5-xx I think is a world first for 8GB PC2-6400 So-Dimm.

NOTE: Heatsink is mandatory here for this 8GB DDR2 So-DIMM kit. ...(Private Custom Memory Modules)
