It IS interesting to consider the same idea using a T1, though.
PCB, T1, RAM, HDMI, µSD, nothing else. That's still parts for about 60 USD, but that's actually not bad. Comes in under a hundred with VAT and profit, would it sell if it ran OS4? _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). What was that in reference to? It doesn't seem to answer any question I had. _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). you are on another thread discussing a new possible PPC board. Perhaps the example of Raspberry including this minimalistic hardware give a hint what a cheap PPC hardware should offer. |

Should it, though. Is "less than the SoC has to offer" really a smart choice? After all, since it has PCIe/SATA/whatnot, it's hard not to think it would be better to put those things on the board.
I imagine most Amigans would like SATA and PCIe in CURRENT_YEAR, because REASONS. _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Raspberry is already used for unexpected projects as a cheap programmable solution so I would not rule it out that it makes sense. Also price sales even if (when everything you need for a full desktop system is added) you are in a similar range as a better solution.
my two cents... you are too much thinking in terms of current PPC NG crowd. If you want something for that market price might be not that important, if you want to win users outside you must offer something that is competitive pricewise and it is not difficult to guess that the more simple something is the cheaper you can offer it. The original 10,000 copies are pretty much sold out. Another print run is being prepped, I believe. |
As far as those of us in USA, PieMag #40 is currently being shipped via surface transportation and should be in the US in 3 weeks.

The Raspberry Pi is made possible courtesy of the mobile devices market with its SoCs containing an ARM CPU plus a decent GPU (and audio codec). By contrast, the only PowerPC SoC with a proper GPU that I know of is the LimeBook's MPC5121e and it's rather dated OpenGL 1.x era PowerVR MBZ Lite GPU. Lack of an SoC with integrated GPU instantly increases the size and cost of any board.
That said, I do like the idea of a minimalist motherboard. A-EON's announced A1222 is a step in that direction.

Even more noteworthy is this one: Quote:
If you’re looking for cables to go with your free Zero, head over to the newly revamped Swag Store, where we’re offering a bundle comprising a mini-HDMI and a micro-USB adapter for just £4
|
So adapters to turn the shite form factor into a useable product ALSO costs more than the motherboard. £4 is about $6
|
Very true, that alone is rather ironic.

Create a project and show the project to A-Eon and Acube.

Because it has absolutely nothing on it whatsoever except an edge connector, Id love to see the Pi Zero Module sell for this price.
Then for similar price, have a verity of boards with USB host, Ethernet, power, audio, video etc
Welcome back to Slot One and mother boards?
How much for a baseboard with a single Module slot, and a PCI express host chip with slots, and a 12 volt power port?
Who would like to see Pi with Aros, but using the Open Source L4 Microkernal? Lets see how well something that boots in under a Meg, gets going on 512. If it cant boot under a Meg, strip out all the deep graphics and audio etc and see where else things are bloating up?

OK, the PiZero would have to have a fair bit added to equal the Pi2
The Pi2, though, is reasonably fast enough to use as a linux desktop for basics such as browsing, word processing, etc. running Raspbian. The user experience isn't bad at all.
If you run AROS on top of Raspbian (ie phoenixconsole's AEROS), the Amiga experience really isn't too bad. If more Amiga programs were ported over to run on ARM it would be a really nice Amiga implementation.
Of course, there is an ongoing effort to run AROS natively on the Pi as well _________________ Fred Booth ======================================== A500, A600, A1200 c/w Mediator and 030 AmigaOne and OS4.1 Mac LCII, G4 Powermac running OSX + Amigakit and MorphOS 3.0 Dell Mini 10 Netbook running IcAros and AmigaForever+Amikit+AmigaSys 2006 Macb |

Whaaat a set of cables (Amicable? Boingcable??) nearly twice as expensive as the computer. That a shameless rip off! But true belivers are lunatic anyway and will pay every price, those clueless sheep. For the same ammount you can pay nearly 1/10 of the registration fee for a single average MorphOS machine or get twice the world peace if installing AROS and save a dozen kittens !!!
Probably like that Will repost once a $5 OS4 device hits the market _________________ My programs: via.bckrs.de MorphOS user since V0.4 (2001) |

a few yars back I thought about pretty simple PPC based on the 5125. http://via.i-networx.de/eframe/eframe.htm
Low end - low price. And IMHO as long as it stays below 100 ($|EUR) it's not a purchase most ppl have to justify but rather pay from their running living-budget.

No Ethernet port, only 512 Megabytes of RAM and just a SD Card Reader? No thanks. _________________ "When the Amiga came out, everyone [at Apple] was scared as hell." (J.L. Gassée, former CEO of Apple France and chief of devs of Mac II-fx, interviewed by Amazing Computing, Nov 1996). |
