New shell to the wb menu would be great. |
Severin already pointed out that you can add a "new shell" command to the menus yourself. Why clutter the default menus with additions that one person wants when others would prefer to add it to another WB menu?? Personally, I have added a half dozen main menus and dozens of sub-menus to my Workbench (including a "new shell" command) using the WB ARexx port. I say leave the Workbench, Window and Icons menus alone and let users customize the WB menus with the WB ARexx port.

Michael add feature request to bugzilla to have "new shell" shorcut next to "execute command", so if devs will think its good enough idea, they will add it |
If you're going to do that for one person then please add another suggestion for me: Leave the Workbench menu alone unless it's an actual improvement in the system.
Just because someone is to lazi to read the WB docs and add a menu item themselves, is no reason to clutter my Workbench menu with items unrelated to Workbench._________________ X1000 with 2GB memory & OS4.1FE |

We were told by Hyp (ssolie) that there wouldn't be more updates to "4.1" after 4.1.3 already. That was in 2011, half a decade ago. Some believed, dome didn't. I for one didn't, for two reasons: 1) the state and the quality of the 4.1.3 was catastrophic and needed a knee jerk update for this reason alone, and 2) what has been promised for "4.2" is in reality impossible, at least without breaking the Amiga binary compatibility, and back then already the question "who will do it" had become an issue. Version 4.1.9 (which is what "AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition update 1" will be) may become released some day, but 4.2 is nothing but carrot dangling. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but if it won't involve black magic and breaking physical and logical laws, it has to be done "the MorphOS NG way" (breaking legacy compatibility), it will be a huge undertaking, and I still see how years has passed by without even minor updates comparable to one single minor MorphOS update is released to OS4, and no X5000 support, no Tabor support, no GFX cards or modern 3D support, etc. 4.2?! Yeah, right...

| Have any Final Edition users noticed you have some V54 OS components already ? Which means you have some parts of AmigaOS 4.2 already.

Thanks. The NewShell feature is just an observation from AROS and if I'm not mistaken also MorphOS'S Amibient. Clearly, there is a strong opinion of it's being or not, so we will see what happens.
Best regards, Kotler

| On AmigaOS 4.1FE, there is a "New Shell from here" available from the contextual menu.

What do you do in the Workbench menu so often that the Update software item is in the way? |
Backdrop and Execute command.
This is the current wb menu: - Update software... - Backdrop - Execute command - Open volume - Redraw all - Update all - Last message - About - Quit
Update software simply just not fit there for me. Or at least not in the first place. Give me one reason for why it is there beside the one that osx has it there.
@kas1e New shell to the wb menu would be great.
|
What are the - Redraw all - Update all
menus for? I do understand the "Update all" wich could be helpful if the "AutoUpdateWB" commodity is off, but "Redraw all", I can't remember having used that, ever, not even in AmigaOS 1.2 times.

Redraw all redraws the contents of all the WB windows. My WB3.0 manual helpfully tells me it may be used in the event of a disturbance to the Workbench . In reality though, I don't think I've ever used it and when my WB windows get corrupted I just scroll them a bit or close and re-open them. ResetWB does something very similar and is probably more reliable at fixing window corruption.
Update all does the same as Window=>Update but for all windows. Again, I don't think I've ever used it, although I use Window=>Update a lot. I don't see why you'd ever want to update all windows like that.
Personally I'd put Execute command at the top of the WB menu, ditch Update all and Redraw all, stick Update software just above About (or alternatively in Tools), replace Quit with Shutdown (which can ask: Quit WB, power off, reboot), and add a Preferences option which opens SYS:Prefs.

| It's very difficult to please amiga users, some will complain when no updates are in sight, others will complain when they are.
I for one will just be very happy with the updates. _________________

Hummm - I'd be at least very careful with such updating tools. Some time ago I thought it might be cool to have a tool automatically updating libraries etc. and so I gave Grunch a try.
It updated a lot of system files and could not find others. The fruitless attempts to update some things with broken URLs were so annoying that I decided to Refrain from Grunch again.
Initially I thought the updates it executed successfully had been good for my system, as everything still seemed to work flawlessly.
But a few weeks ago I wanted to give NetSurf for OS 3 a try. I could not get it running at all - the system crashed each time I tried to launch NetSurf.
Loads of logfiles and several weeks later I ended up doing a fresh re-install of OS 3.9 and the official BoingBags, as I found out that several of my libraries were newer versions than in OS 3.9 BBs I & II (thanks to 'Grunch'). Some of the updates must have been THAT incompatible that they made my system freeze upon attempting to start Netsurf.
Meanwhile I'm close to being able to start Netsurf. After clicking it's icon, the splashscreen appears with version number, I am asked to select the screenmode and the GUI comes up, but empty. So still some things to sort out - thanks to 'Grunch'...
So be careful with updating Tools! _________________ Ciao

Indeed. I tried Grunch myself, and ended up in the same situation.
Its a cool program, but you dont really know what it will do to the stability of your current setup. You could probably point to my own ignorance with regards to accepting everything it flags, but on Amiga, you are very much required to have a indepth knowledge about your setup, and what updates you can accept.
I do like the concept of Grunch tho. |
