a member of apollo team has posted a video of aros running on vampire expanded amiga.
maybe not that much to see but the degree of responsivity and the 68k cpu recognition is probably what was intended to be demonstrated.
https://youtu.be/V83Az5BrTow
config, apparently: V500 in an A2000 + ZorroII PicassoIV (1024x768/16).

@wawa

GFX redraw is still slow, but at least it looks useable.

Not great feat, there isn´t much more (semi) regular AROS68k users on AW.

im not sure, but i expect kals improvements to gfx system to be profitable for all paltforms even if less visible on faster ones, as x86 or x64.

@wawa

I have been away since 1995. I am not very well educated on AROS, but I like what I see. I do think the Vampire is a game changer, that is why I have a 500 and a 2000 in the home office now.

I am guessing AROS will have an emulator to play the old games, is this right? I like the old games...

@SaludaLabs no need for any emulation. Most games don't use much from the operating system and Aros68k is binary compatible with Amiga OS3.1 anyway. The Apollo Core of the Vampire has a CPU that implements all the (integer) instructions of all the Motorola 680x0 so any games that use instructions from the 68020 that are not included in the 68040 or 68060 will still boot from floppy on a Vampire. However some games have issues with any faster processor, WHDLoad has fixes for those and the Vampire also has a setting to improve compatibility. In the future the Vampire is also likely to allow AGA only games to be played on the OCS and ECS Amigas.

@SaludaLabs

How shall I explain it...

Aros is compiled for different hardware like AMD64 or ARM

there you would be right

if compiled for 68k it is from view of software like 3.1 with similar or identical API

Software does not need to be compiled for Aros, just that the libraries are compiled from Aros sources and not the original ones. When Aros was ported to 68k Toni Wilen did a great job to develop kickstart replacements that are now part of Aros. For a long time Aros 68k lived there only used by few people then Vampire/Apollo became reality and Aros offers many advantages there. At the moment limitations (f.e. in certain graphic areas) and bugs are removed then Aros will run on Vampire. It has many advantages compared to 3.1 and still only low hardware requirements, like AHI, USB-Support (Poseidon), Themeing, Network stack and much more

aros68k is binary compatible with a range of amiga operating systems, kickstarts or workbenches, whatever you would call them from1.x to 3.x. the compatibility may not be perfect or complete in just every area, but this is the goal.

so from software point of view you simply run amiga software on aros. its interchangeable. same for libraries, mui classes, device drivers, things like that.

for instance you can use your amiga usb hardware with the device driver delivered by your vendor. i have not tested it personally yet, but ive been told that it works by someone who tested it.

also warpup has been reported to work (at least in uae). you can see it here in post #44:

@wawa

Better for the n00bs and the recently comebacks remember that aros IS binary compatible ONLY in the 68k version, else is just source code compatible

im noob myself and im stressing the aspect you mention alrady too much. usually many people think aros is some kind of lnux or so..

whatever..

we (or rather toni) have got another very basic and annoying bug straight, that prevented aros to run on many amiga models off ide. just tested . hope it gets confirmed and commited tomorrow.

good work today. sleep well, guys.

@SaludaLabs

version in amigaforever is old

current is in nightly:
http://aros.sourceforge.net/de/nightly1.php

you must take bootiso and setup winuae. I do not know how much experience you have there

I developed a distribution based on Aros 68k (Aros Vision):
http://www.aros-platform.de/

it includes lots of software and is based on magellan

it is some months old too so recent changes are not included. I plan to offer a new updated version in near future

@OlafS25

simply copy the files of a current nightly over it. the latest changes are _very_ much improving the user experience, even if mostly on amiga hardware.

@SaludaLabs

i dont know how amigaforever works.

but assuming you have an aros drive defined as a directory of your (win)uae host, you can simply point the emulator rom settings to both rom kickstart image files in /boot/amiga subdirectory. it should start right away.

Looks like time to try it out on my cyberstom fitted A1200. I've never managed a full boot on this, something I'd always assumed to be due to the presence of the ppc, but maybe it was the ide (the CDROM is on the 4-way IDE interface as my SCSI CDROM died some time ago). It would be nice to be able to show AROS on the A1200 too at the Recursion computer fair next month.

Cheers,
Nigel.

@ntromans

you need to edit your s-s in order to include something like that:
boot/amiga/AROSBootstrap ROM boot/amiga/aros.hunk.gz
followed by paths to and names of you p96 rtg driver files (.chip and .card) (that assuming you want to use graphic card.
id also advise to delete prefs/env/sys/theme.var to get rid of skinning. you can enable it later again if you want.

im booting aros on my a4000/csppc all fine. takes 35seconds cold boot from amiga 4000 ide.
