I agree, it's not exactly a marvel of design.

Well, IMO the last nice design of Apple was the blue-white G3

But it's a good machine.

No doubt about it.

The specs are rather better than I'd expected, particularly the Radeon 9200. That's a fairly capable chip, and faster then the GeForce 5200 they put in the iMac G5.

I would wish for something better than the 9200, but obviously not at that price.

Wonder when they'll reach the UK. I'm very tempted.

Considering the pricing of Apple in Germany, they will probably convert dollar to Euro one-to-one and then add 50%. At least that seems to be the case with other Macs.

@Interesting

A nice/fair price for an even nicer machine!

I can feel the pull of the Darkside (okay it's just the Grayside, PC's are the true Darkside). But damn it's a heck of a temptation to have all that power in a box about the size of an old amiga external floppy drive.

@Bean

I'm just looking at that now, thanks. That hasn't helped me resist buying the damn thing! Trying to get the price but the AppleStore is BUSY!

It still needs more to be the iPod of the living room, I feel. It could be the iPod of MY living room, but we'll see. Maybe they'll sell it to the Mac faithful now (who owned iPods before anyone else) but market it well and come out with the remote/software later?

I liked the more colourful designs too. The iPod minis are quite funky. I'd like to see another machine in Bondi Blue!

Nice machine and specs, but IMO it's DROP DEAD UGLY. Ugh! *shudder*. Looks like a tissue box

Why can't apple designers come up with a nicer case?

But hey look at the bright side. With such a small size It's a case modders dream.

If I ever bought it I would rip it to bits and try to install it in my car or under my keyboard or something

Darn typos

The UK price turns out to be £339, which is quite good -- $499 = £266 + 17.5% VAT = £313, so they're only overcharging by £26.

The Eurozone price (519 EUR) looks a bit more of a rip-off, though.

I'm so, so tempted to whip out my credit card and buy one. But I suppose it's sensible to wait for some reviews, just in case there's an unpleasant surprise hidden in the design somewhere.

I expected something like that as well. And they do indeed convert one-to-one, but they didn't add the 50% here..... so I just ordered mine
Took a lot of clicking... the webshop is having troubles with the load atm

This will give me something to play until I can buy a ready-to-run, pre-installed Micro-A1i in a Fantasy-case. That's what I'm waiting for on the Amiga front now.

Onno

@CyberStorm

When the rumours said $500, I immediately added a couple of hundred dollars and did the kind of currency conversion that would make a loan shark blush. Based on that I'm reasonably pleased!

@ohno

Still waiting for the A1-I. Also, my IBM Stinkpad is at death's door, hanging every couple of minutes, and I like having a PC laptop, because I'm sad like that. I don't have the power to resist, and this is why I live in rented accomodation!

As a post-iPod assault on the living room, it seems like a huge missed opportunity to me. I really wanted TV out, a remote control and some kind of Tivo-like capabilities.

I think they will sell them very quickly, maybe even have trouble meeting demand. Then about the time Tiger comes out, that will drive some sales, then if they add some TiVO capabilities just before Christmas 2005, they can boost sales yet again.

Apple takes their time doing things...but usualy they get it done, before its 'too late'. anyway...who knows, its just a guess, but I think they are on a roll...and certainly will add much more media centrish stuff as time goes on.

@Intuitioned

It's interesting and the Apple Store and site are swamped right now.

I did a quck check and a properly configured machine comes in just shy
of $1,000 before the display

One other poitn of note...I'm guessing those ATA drives are 2.5", if
you wanted to use it as an audio/video workstation that pretty much
means you are buying an external firewire/usb drive....wodner if
they'll get matching cases out of those???

@RobertDupuy

Makes sense. I'd definitely hope for that.

In case you're interested, the DVI to S-Video/composite adapter is £15 and there's a remote control with a slightly awkward infrared receiver for £40. My Sony Ericsson phone can be used as a remote, but it's not quite as intuitive and that kind of has to leave the living room.

@JKD

And it looks like there's only one memory slot, hence the hefty price tag for 1gb.

Sorry if I'm swamping this thread! I'll shut up eventually...
