Custom Chips Question

Hi all,

Do any of you know of any real limitations or expections I should be aware of for a Amiga 500 PAL ver 6A motherboard when it comes to custom chips? For example - can I put a Fatter Agnus in it? Can I use a Super Denise? How about the other custom chips? I noticed on Big Book of Amiga Hardware that you have an option to add an Agnus up to 2MB, but wasn't sure if they all would work or just specific chip numbers for specific Amiga model numbers. Thanks.

Ed

The main differences between an NTSC and PAL A500 with ECS is that 1) the traces on the motherboard are set accordingly and 2) the clock crystal is a slightly different frequency. There are many utilities that switch between PAL and NTSC mode in ECS or AGA systems so I would think that the chips themselves will work regardless of the native configuration. If you want to put 2 megs of Chip RAM into it and it has 512k on the motherboard and 512k on the trapdoor slot, you'll need to sandwich a Megachip board under the 2 meg Agnus to get 2 megs total Chip RAM. (The Megachip board supplies the remaining meg-of-chip. )

Oh. I was under the belief that if my current Agnus (512k) was replaced with a Fatter Agnus (2Meg) than I would have 2 Megs of chip ram. . . without adding anything else. Also, is there any real benefit to not only add the Fatter Agnus, but a Super Denise as well? Thanks.

The fatter Agnus only provides addressing of, and access to, more video RAM. The "thinner" versions have address registers with fewer bits, so can address less memory.

The actual RAM must be provided elsewhere.

Ok, thanks for the clarification on that. So I guess my follow-up question is this;

- What is currently available that can add 2 MB of Chip Ram to the Amiga 500
- If nothing is available other than an occasional E-Bay sale, can a good company like
AMIGAKIT be cool and make something like that for me (us) ?

Thanks.

Ed
