| Maybe the dumbest question I've had to ask yet.
How does one get out of a CLI and back to the Ubuntu desktop in Ubuntu?
I got in with Ctrl^Alt^F2 and assumed Ctrl^Alt^F1 would get me back out, but no, all that, or anything else I could think of to try, did was get me to a log in! I kept having to log in again before I could try anything else, all in vain. |

Ctrl-Alt-F7 is what works on my PC with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I assume it should be the same on PPC. |

Generally in Linux with X: TTY1-6 are logins, TTY7 is X. TTY8 has been sometimes used as log messages, but not in Ubuntu afaik.
Ctrl-Alt-Fx switches TTY, where x is obviously something between 1 and 12 inclusive.
It used to be fairly easy to create extra TTY functions (more logins, logs, other functions you use often), but for some reason now everything is abstracted to a level I don't seem to understand. Getting too old, maybe
Edit: Ah, it was as easy as adding a file named ttyX.conf in /etc/init, containing what you want it to run. For instance "tail -f somelogfile", "watch cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/temperature" or just some more getty's for extra logins. Last edited by olegil on 02-Oct-2015 at 11:53 AM.

| Ctrl is only needed to leave X11 behind, once you are in consoles, you only need alt+Fn to change virtual console. _________________ B5D6A1D019D5D45BCC56F4782AC220D8B3E2A6CC |

If Alt-F7 doesn't work, try Alt-F8. I'm running Linux Mint Debian Edition, which is based on Debian Stable, and it uses Alt-F8 for some reason.

| @all the above
Thanks! But how did you know? It doesn't seem to come up with "root@whatever$: help."
Olegil's response was over my head, but I'm going to study it some more.
