Hi as i see Pagestream is the best DTP program for amiga
computers. There is also this papyrus.

As papyrus is probably going to be made for os4 and pagestream5
will be made also im wondering what i should register.

My main thing is that i want to have a good program for printing
CDLabels and CDFront/back.

There is also a program called turboprint but i hope i can live
without one more program. I just want to use a printer, probably
a USB printer on my A1 using OS4.

To make some gfx i believe i could use Pfpaint or other and than
import in pagestream/papyrus and choose cdlabel. I believe there
are templates for this.

But i still dont know what to choose. Pagestream from grashopper
or Papyrus from Titan. And ofcourse there is alot of printers.
I dont know if everyone would work. Maybe some are specially
good for cd's etc.

Thanks for help

@Kicko

Pagestream is currently available and runs on an amigaone, papyrus does not.

how good papyrus will be, we will have to wait and see, I have placed my pre-order, but pagestream will do all you want to do.
The current version of Papyrus still needs Turboprint, but i understand this might change when an OS4 version is released.

@Kicko

I voted PageStream because it does what you want & is available now. I will certainly look at Papyrus if/when it comes out. I'm a sucker for new programs.

@Kicko

I give my voice to PageStream because I don't see Papyrus in action and don't know how works!

I think the ultimate office suite bundle would be (until OpenOffice gets here, which is more a traditional office suite)...

PageStream
Ignition

@Kicko

I voted for Pagestream since I consider that to be THE dtp application for AmigaOS. But I've already preordered Papyrus from Titan.
I've got Pagestream 4.1 and that runs fine in OS4 already. Will probably upgrade to 5 when it becomes avalible.

@Kicko

shows how much i knew, i belived papyrus was an word type of program with a db thing....not dtp.

ahwell i have used pagestream for years and i love it so i voted that (and it works fine on os4 atm... papyrus is a pipedream atm (for all i know atleast.. 60 pre orders and still no official comment from titan...)

@Kicko

They will probably both do what you want, but Pagestream is a true DTP package, whereas Papyrus is more of a "document processor". I voted for Pagestream as it is DTP you need.

@Kicko

I voted for PageStream as the layout of CD covers is a DTP type of job where PageStream has the tools you need. On the other hand, while we don't know what Papyrus for OS 4 will be like as I word processor I expect it will be better suited to writing long text heavy documents than PageStream.

Of course you can layout documents with lots of text in PageStream but it's not really designed for the actual text entry. As ever it's horses for courses!

@Kicko

pagestream prints really fast with a usb printer here using it's own drivers, you just need to create a dosdriver for the usbprinter.device and tell pagestream to use it...

So you don't need turboprint (in fact turboprit is much, much slower than pagestream, iirc it takes about 3 to 6 times longer, depending on the complexity of the page of course).

@Severin

Thank you all. As i see it DTP is the one that would suit
me. Yes its nice with papyrus that its more an office package
but as you say they need 60 preorders and the a1. So as they
havent started with it it could take ages before its finished.

And in the meantime maybe openoffice comes. So to be on the sure
side Pagestream will suit fine. However what i have seen the
gui on v4.1 looks really old. I hope v5 when it comes will look
better on os4. And pagestream have been on amiga for a long time
and they use it for magazine etc. Cool.

I dont know when im going to buy it. I believe wait until v5
comes out. In the meantime i could search for a nice printer
for its purpose.

Wasn't there a demo of PageStream in the UK about 2 years back (during the roadshow maybe?) that had sported a classy OS4 look. It looked quite good from a screenshot that I remember.

Problem is that Ignition isn't realeased, and noone knows if and when that will change

@Kicko

Wether you need Turboprint or not depends on the printer your useing and what quality you want as a result.

All you need is to run Pagestream, and it has the default Workbench look, you don't even need to set a screens.prefs entry for it like other 'old' programs.

that clearly depends on what you want to do with that program.
-> writing mainly letters and such stuff? go for papyrus.
-> having full control about what to place on the "paper" and how to place it on the "paper" with more manual actions to do? go for pagestream.

This is not two comparable programs.

Payrus is an Office suit which includes a DTP program.
Pagestream is a full fledged DTP program, among the best in
the world. It's a bit unfair to compare these two IMHO.

Papyrus is a better product for the majority of non-professional DTP
users out there. For example, most user have NO USE for
90% of the Pagestream functions, though very good for professionals
needing them in their work.
Who would like to write a simple letter in a DTP program???
Who would like to make small database of their CD collection in a DTP
program?

Apropos Pagestream... i'm eagerly awaiting the OS4 Version.. any news about that?
The last life sign was that the work has been restarted because of the arrived A1..

@Kicko

They're two completely different bits of software.

Pagestream is a pro/semi-pro level DTP application, NOT A WORD PROCESSOR, whereas Papyrus is a small/home-office application, with a few page-layout capabilities. They're almost incomparable and would probably compliment each other in the right environment.

Pagestream looks more like what you're after though.
