Lets all be thankful to Hombre for this first and promising screenshot of Feelin running under OS4. Let's cheer him a lot, even more because he don't sleep a lot because of that

Excellent! Well done!

I'll be having a look to see if I can use feelin in future projects.

Cheers,
Bean.

@Gofromiel

Now you can see why Hombre is burning the midnight oil on both Feelin and the Amiga Fantasy design.

@Gofromiel

It does look nice indeed

The part that now follows, is no critisism agains Feelin, you've done a nice job.

Just a thought though,
do we really need yet another GUI?

There is allready Reaction, MUI, Triton, just to mention a few, adding Feelin to those, will add
the amount of different files that will need to be installed in OS4.
I don't want OS4 to go the same path as Windows, ending up with 20000+ dll-type of files.

Linux has a lot of different GUI's too and it can be quite frustrating at times, "this app is incompatible with KDE, Gnome etc." so you need to install another WM".
Does OS4 need to follow them?

@tomazkid

Just visit the Feelin website, read a bit what Feelin does, and you'll know why it's not one more "GUI kit".

[Edit]
If it was only that, i would totally agree with you...

@tomazkid

Even if you run GNOME desktop you can run KDE apps and vice versa. You just need the libraries.

I think it's not any problem if there is many gui-engines. Feeling looks quite interesting. Ofcourse it would be nice if there would be consistent look for the Reaction, MUI and Feelin, all of those three are configurable so that should not be any big problem.

@Gofromiel and Hombre

Well. I am following the development of Feelin and I think it is good.
I also wrote about it on Wikipedia envoice of "History of the GUIs".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_GUI

Here is my suggestion:

Andrea Palmaté some times ago ported Cairo engine on AmigaOS 4.0.

Feelin is based on XML.

Is it possible to integrate the power of XML and the vector based system of Cairo and join both them to create the first true vectorial GUI on Amiga?

Vectorial GUIs are being experimented actually in Windows, Linux and OSX.

I just saw screenshots of a desktop on Linux, based on Cairo... Really impressive.

It features funny thingies like vectorial icons and objects, and the capabilities to dump entire screens on printer in a real WYSIWYG.

3D GUI's are being also experimented on other OSes, but these are complicated and the worst fact is that they ARE NOT INTUITIVE to be used in a real desktop environment.

IMHO I think 3D GUI's have no chance and no future.

Instead of it, Vector based GUIs are very promising, are enjoyable and more they feature lots of enhancements, bonuses, and advancements.

I think that Amiga should explore also the new fronteer of vector GUI's, just to stay close to the mainstream.

Yep those are just useless toys, atleast those which i have seen. Current 3D desktops and guis are nice if you want to show some "cool" things to your friends, but not if you want to do some serios work.

@miksuh

I'm whit tomazkid on this one, how there nothing that me or tomazkid can do about it progress is made every day.

System library and gadget classes should be made by OS developers not by 3rd parties, simply hate looking all over the net to find a MUI class,

It's not that I'm saying no progress far from it, I like what feelin can do, and I think it's needed, so way not port GTK it object oriented is it not? any way some one is, doing just that! so now we have GTK, MUI, Reaction, Feelin and so on.

My biggest problem whit this is, when we add classes and library's to the system, we add memory usage too, as system classes and library's becomes more or less resident when programs start using this system resources, as result we are under minding the integrity of the OS, AmigaOS is no longer fast when it needs to swap memory in and out of disk storage every second.

Well it's 100% better then using static compiled binary
(this is when library's are included in the program binary as you find whit many compiled Linux programs)

No and I don't think developers is going to stop using MUI or Reaction now that feelin poped up, even if feelin is 100% times better.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Feelin' is a small library with memory management features in addition to the user-interface designs. If it bothers you to think about it as a GUI engine then think about it as a general-purpose runtime library for programs (because it is closer to the latter than the former anyway).

BOOPSI is not going to go away since the Datatype subsystem depends on it but I sometimes wish it would because of the overhead involved.

[edit] Note that MUI is pretty much a MorphOS fixture and Zune is an AROS fixture and Reaction is an AmigaOS feature but Feelin' runs on all Amiga-like systems now.

First of all, Feelin is not just a GUI framework but a general object-oriented framework, which could be used to replace BOOPSI or OOP on AROS. Feelin is new and beacause she has no heritage she can be whatever she wants to. Feelin is open-source and I do my best to provide support, and the most advanced features. Feelin uses Dynamic IDs and can generate objetcs as well as complete and running applications from XML files.

Feelin is not just another GUI, she brings many features that are completely unknown to the Amiga and that would be VERY difficul to reproduce with other toolkits.

Using Cairo is one of my next move. Cairo seams very nice and powerfull, but I guess I'll have to give up low color depth screen support. It's something I wanted to do for a long time... wait and see

You should really have a look to GTK documentation. It is not object-oriented, and IMHO, it's very painfull to develop applications with it.

You can launch a lot of applications using Feelin with less than 2Mo of memory available, even more if their GUI is defined using XML. Remeber that Feelin provides its very own memory management system and that it's very efficient.

The best part is that Feelin is in intensive development, that I want to make great and nice things with my baby, and that I'm open to discussion, concepts and ideas.
