Hi!

Today, I sat down with headphones and though i'd have a data/music session.
I fired up AmigaAmp and started playing some tunes while surfing. And withing minutes, sometimes within seconds my A1 froze.

I tried AmigaAmp, Amplifier, Songplayer and TuneNet (MP3 and Stream) all hung pretty soon. :(

I then tried Sid4Amiga, I have it running now, and it doesn't seem to crash.

I have the latest mpega libmad from OS4depot, and the latest mixer. Does anyone have a clue?

Sys: A1XE/G3, Soundblaster Live, Upd4.

I'm glad you brought this up. I was going to start a thread on it myself but wanted to do some investigation first.

When I updated to Update 4, the old Soundblaster Live and Ethernet problem appeared to resurface.

I checked the versions of AHI and the EMU10K1 driver, it turned out that the EMU10K1 driver was the fixed one, but still older than the one I was using under Update 3. I updated back to that version, so now the AHI setup is exactly the same as it was under my previous working config.

I still seem to be getting problems, but I haven't done any thorough testing. I'm a little concerned that this is the old issue and it has reoccured due to changes in the Ethernet driver.

Chris

I say always the same things.... so i'm going to pass this time....

Try at least to downclock the cpu to 600Mhz and try again.

@ikir

I've changed my CPU fan again and while I haven't thought of it this problem seems to be gone!

I'm listening to MP3's right now, browsing aw.net without lockups. I'm gonna try to download some big files from FTP though to see if it really works now or not.

I'm using a Zalman VF700-Cu LED now (instead of the Swiftech MCX159R)

UPDATE:

It's been downloading from FTP for 5 minutes now. It never lasted that long with upd #3 and the old cooler so so far so good.

The 500MB that I downloaded are done now and the music playes on.

My system:

A1 G4 XE @ 800MHz
512MB RAM (don't remember the brand, sorry)
ATI Radeon 7000 64MB
SB Live!
SII 0680

I did just put another 600MBs of files to download...

No crash yet...

Latest IDE-drivers... update #4 installed over update #3...

I used AmiFTP to download...

@hotrod

hmm.... so ya'll think this could be a heat problem? i don't think so... i've changed to a better fan.. it was a while ago, but still.. it runs ok.

That's the only thing that I've changed... that and the CPU module (burned my first) so instead of a 7455 I got a 7451 now runing at 800MHz.

Ikir was the only one who didn't have any problems back then (using a XE) and he got a big cooler...

OK, I thought to myself. I'll spend some time with the insides of my A1 today.
I really _SHOULD_ have an onboard sound there, as my a1 was among the first ones. The strange thing was that i had no connectors on the back of the computer. Puzzling. :)
i'd also want to check the fan, and remove some dust etc. Springcleaning. :)

I checked some images showing the chip, and it seemed like I had one, after that, just to be sure I ran PCIScan, and yepp, there it was, the onboard audio. Happiness. But, why no connectors?
I examined the back of my A1, and found the place were they should be, hmmm, what's this? A metal lid that I've forgot to remove, peel peel peel, and there they were, the connectors. I happilly ripped out the Soundblaster Live that has been troubling me with lockups, installed the onboard sound drivers, connected the speakers, fired up tunened, and here I am, no crash yet! NEEDLESS TO SAY; I AM A HAPPY CHAP TODAY!!!.....

anyone wanna buy a soundblaster live? :P

yaaaaawn... after some more testing I discovered that I still get the lockups even with the onboard audio... :/
seems it wasn't related to my SoundBlaster Live then, something else is lurking around in my system... I just checked my cpu fan, and it's spinning as nicely as ever, and it's a G3 CPU so it shouldn't get anyway near as hot as a G4.

must be some software error then... i could try to change fan just to really really rule that out, what fan do you guys recommend for a G3 cpu?

and that other advice, about trying to downclock the CPU to 600mhz, how do I do that?

edit, re-read the thread, so, is Zalman VF700-Cu LED the best fan?

Good list. Out of curiosity...what is your internet connection?

@spotUP

Do you have dnetc running?
If yes, i doubt that it has anything to do with your cooling
If no, get it, let it run and see if it locks up, too, THEN we can talk about
cooling in the first place.

Run SnoopDos, let it log the output to a file (either RAD: or to a SFS partition
so you won't end up with a unvalidated partition.

Run the music soft and play some tracks, if it locks up, see the logs...

Sorry, no more ideas here, though you might already have tested on a blank system?

I had to ask, because results (issues) have proven to be different based on type
of internet connection.
The term "stressed system" has been used many times as well, usually in conjunction
with internet and audio usage.
However, I suggest you do audio testing with OS4 native apps, since I have even
seen internet completely shut down with use of a1serial with at least one of the
apps you stated using. I notice these things because of my slower connection.
They might -not- be noticable with a highspeed connection.
I still think the specific audio program used in testing can play a part here,
not necessarily, though, in your case.

yea, i used tunenet in the last test and the a1 crashed then aswell, so..
i am still running dnetc here without problems. it's at 30% now.

edit; has anyone had these mp3 related crashes with the onboard chip?
it doesn't seem to be auido HW related though, as it happens for me with both the Soundblaster and the Onboard chip, so this question might lead nowhere..

running a cpu watcher here now... the cpu is at 100% all the time, dnetc has crunched 50% of the first batch now...

i have never been able to play mp3's this long while surfing and stuff, note, i haven't been downloading at the same time as I am listening to mp3, just casual surfing..

maybe i should start a download just to see what happens?...

there, now i am downloading a 600mb iso at 200 cps with ibrowse.

works so far (3 mins) ... starting sid4amiga now.
