Hyperion, what about a status update, progress report and roadmap for the os4?
Just let us know what are your plans.

Thank you

@AmigaBlitter

I'd guess something like:

|Work on OS4---(2 weeks)--- Release something---(2 weeks)---Release more---(2 weeks)---you get the idea.. up until ---(2 weeks)--- Release Final---(2 weeks)---keep going!

@AmigaBlitter

Hehe, this topic feels like a flashback to Xmas 2005, 2004, oh wait...

Honestly, what's the point in releasing OS4 now?

The only version that would make sense is the one for BlizzardPPC and CyberstormPPC. But I guess they are still fiddling with driver-support. (Nevertheless, I wouldn't mind about a Prerelease!).

@BinoX

All the AmigaWorld member wish to see the final release of the OS in just one week, but as we all know, more time is necessary.

I hope this discussion can be positive for all the Amiga users. No criticism for Hyperion, but only suggestions.

Just a way to involve the users in the development of the system: a sort of wish list.

@AmigaBlitter

Taken from the Pianeta Amiga fair webpage (URL):

Rough translation:

"AmigaOS4 is the latest, eagerly awaited version of the Amiga's operating system. Its development is proceeding since years and, after the release of the forth update of the developers' version, a release of the final version is expected for Pianeta Amiga. There's still no official confirmation, still the fair held in Empoli could celebrate its tenth anniversary with the most awaited announcement by the Amiga community. Moreover, there are rumors indicating a probable presentation during the fair of new hardware for OS4. Wait for more news on these pages."

Pianeta Amiga will be held on 23/24.09 in Italy.

I take this news with a pinch of salt, of course; still, I will be very happy if it will happen!

@Varthall and AmigaBlitter:

Your information is outdated.

This is the official Amiga OS timeline:

As you might already know, it will only happen if there is new hardware.

@AmigaBlitter

OS4 will be released...

Booom, the world will end...

A nude spacemouse will lower from the stars to sell mankind the perfect system,
with a perfect OS installed: SpaceOS v0.7...
(It's darn expensive, all whales of the world have to be sold!)

A strange looking guy with thick glasses, calling himself ... Winnie ... will
come along and "update" the OS, turning it into an unuseable piece of slow crap,
called "WinniOS"...everyone will use it because it's based on SpaceOS...

After the world is as boring as today, an archeologist will discover ancient
floppy disks with AmigaOS3 installed and some guys from Hyperion (the moon, not
the buisness) will advance and adapt this OS to the latest hardware available:
"human brain cells"

After 12 years of development the "human brain super computer" will talk it's
first words: "Amiga, you don't know it by now, but you can't kill us!"

Every WinniOS based computer networked with this little machine will blow to
pieces (and these are nearly all, cause UniNet is everywhere...)

The whole universe will start using this OS, it will be adapted to every single
"brain cell computer" out there and life will be as fantastic as it never was.

...

In the distance a nude spacemouse is floating by, mumbling to itself:
"Selling them the same S*** over and over again is simply fun...muahahhahahaha"

Three decades later a small boy is born, his mother calls him ... BILL

@polka.

I think the fair's page is more up-to-date, the news item is dated 14th April 2006.

@polka.

You could say there were some "delays". Evidently these dates were wildly optimistic. I guess that's why Hyperion won't give dates anymore.

What? Even more recent than a 6-year-old announcement from Amiga Inc.?

@polka.

I don't think anyone will argue about a news item posted this year being more recent than one posted 5 years ago

Indeed, that and other parts look not much valid anymore.

@all

You do realise that timelines for software projects are generally a load of BS, right from the start. You cannot predict the amount of time required with any accuracy. As a result, there isn't a single software company (that is more than a few years old) in the world that hasn't had release dates delayed and multi million dollar budget blowouts due to things taking longer than expected. Sure a lot of those incidents can be attributed to mismanagement, but even when things are managed well, eventually you will have a project that gets delayed.

Having said that, if you don't set deadlines then projects are likely to suffer from feature creep, where developers continually think up cool new features to add, delaying things further. Plus people demand release dates.

Hans

I generally agree on that. A few months over the schedule is nothing special or extra-ordinary, just look at computer game companies.
OTOH, software projects require a sane and reasonable timeline, at least one that is not exceeded by more than 5 years. Otherwise you simply run out of money since development costs will kill you without having any revenue.
