| I'm not worried about when OS4.0 will come out. I'm worried about what hardware I can run it on. If there is no hardware it won't matter when the OS comes out. _________________ Operating Systems: AROS (hosted through Linux) Ubuntu 7.10 Palm 3.5.3 Computers: Cymru |

Let's think...... 1) The first consumer release of OS4 is finished, just not released. 2) When the original AmigaOnes were finished, the OS was still in Alpha/Beta development, so that is why users had to wait. 3) New and different AmigaOne motherboard hardware will require Administrative agreements and processes from multiple companies. 4) It will also require the hardware to be finished. 5) It will also require AmigaOS4 hardware drivers.
Accurately guessing how long steps 3, 4, and 5 will take is not possible. We just need to be aware of what the next step is, and watch for it. I don't think it makes sense to speculate much until the hardware has actually been finished. _________________ http://www.hostcove.com http://www.youtube.com/hostcove Sam460 : X1000 : X5000 |

Good context. This is rather intersting as NOBODY has answered the question if ANYONE can get a license for "OS4" to run on their board (which are all vapour ATM). This is the question people are dodging as i'm afraid its not a good answer. And before the trolls and fanatics come in, please back up your claims..

I think you only need the license to sell an "AmigaOne", and only if all three partners endorse it. Not all of Eyetechs boards were called "AmigaOne" IIRC, they had "a1" in the name instead. I wonder if even Eyetech ran into licensing problems with Amiga Inc?

Amiga companies WILL NOT answer direct questions because everytime they do, it turns out to be complete ####.
I just wonder when the long overdue version of OS4 for CyberStorm PPC and Blizzard PPC cards will be released.

To the Amigan it doesn't matter. My µA1-C runs AmigaOS 4 - that's what mattered to me when I bought it.

Really? I didn't know it was released and thought it still to be in Beta.
Okay so when is OS4.1 coming out? |

I think the rumor mill has that answer as "yes". From what I've heard anyway. Maybe that's the real reason we never saw any of those "already paid for" MicroA1's that Alan last spoke about. It would be kinda hard to sell them if you are told you don't have a license to do so.
**Please note, that as far as I know, this is rumor and I have no facts to prove this is the case**

Well I've been waiting years to even get a sniff of OS4 on my Blizzard A1200. Knowing my luck, it'll packup for good when it eventully comes out . Just been beta testing Windoze Bloat++ (Vista pb2), and would love to try OS4 on my ageing miggy... Vista slows my AMD 64 3700 down, it's just rediculous, even OSX worked faster !!!
http://newton.sunderland.ac.uk/~specfreak/MyAmiga/MyAmiga.html
I realised I need a Voodoo 3 2000/3000 to run Warp3D though, but I had the Banshee from an older machine.
I'll probably get a Spider USB card, and a Voodoo 3 and then sit and wait a few more years for OS4.
BTW, anyone know if OS4 for BPPC supports the Mediator PCI and Voodoo cards ? |

No, it doesn't support the Mediator. Rogue recently stated that there is not even a Mediator-driver in the CVS yet. And that after 6 years of OS4-development! *sigh*
And when you look at the IRC-interview, Adam is mentioning DMA issues. I very much doubt that there will ever be _proper_ Mediator drivers for OS4. Maybe after another 6 years of development. _________________ This signature is in the middle of a much needed facelift! |

reading the latest IRC session with ACK I noticed That Ack reports that Amiga Inc. was very cooperative. Perhaps AInc's quietness is because htey're dmaned if they do and damned if they don't say anything.

IIRC, the Mediator does not "do" DMA properly, but fakes it using video memory as a temporary store for disk data. I don't understand the details, but I think that to support it would mean making special hacked versions of all the associated OS4 drivers, which the devs are not prepared to do.
Thus the DMA "issue" is just that the Mediator hardware does not support it.
*****************************
As for the release of a "final" OS4, it depends on what you define as "final". It will never be "complete", every release is merely a snapshot of the current development. We have had four such snapshots released so far. Had there been plenty of available hardware out there, any of them could have been called "the final", with later versions being given away or sold as "updates".
It's no different now - Hyperion could probably make another snapshot at any time and call it "Update 5" or "Final" or whatever you want. But while there is no new hardware to run it on, it makes sense to continue development so that the next "Update" or "Final" is further progressed than "Upate 4". If that adds features that make the next release more like "OS 4.1" than "OS 4.0", then most people won't complain.

Basically, the Mediator PCI bus cannot write to A1200 accelerator Fast RAM. So, what they do is that... they don't do DMA, essentially. They set the drivers to program the chip to write to local (to the PCI bus) memory, in this case graphic card VRAM, using DMA, and then do processor driven IO to read the data off the VRAM manually. This is not DMA in any stretch of imagination, it's an ugly hack and changing the OS4 drivers to work with it would be a huge waste of time. Last edited by AMiGR on 12-Jun-2006 at 01:24 PM.

I think they aren't saying anything because there is nothing to say. They should give the torch to Hyperion Entertainment and faid into the bacground. _________________ Operating Systems: AROS (hosted through Linux) Ubuntu 7.10 Palm 3.5.3 Computers: Cymru |

Thanks for that explanation. I take it the reverse direction CAN be done, ie writing from FastRAM to the bus IS possible?

| as much as I love the amiga, and as much as i would love to have a new amiga with a modern OS.
I must also face some facts here. After 6 years of development, i think the time for the "when its done" sign to be replaced by the "Never" sign is here, and has been here since x-mas 2005...
Fae it, with all those delayes, AOS is probably never going to see a commercially version.
Don't get my wrong, I love the amiga and I still hope that AOS gets released. But honestly, I don't beleive it any more. _________________

The big $25.000-question is if there are contractual reasons that keep Hyperion from releasing an "OS 4.0 final" at this or a future point in time.
We'll see what happens when new hardware is released: If there will be another Prerelease bundled with it, or a full "final" release.
Apart from changes that might happen due to contractual reasons, I don't think Hyperion is interested in going the desktop route any further (i.e OS 4.1/OS 5.0)._________________ This signature is in the middle of a much needed facelift! |

Knew what? When the A1 came out there wasn't even an OS 4 on classics. Nowadays an adaption will be a lot faster, so I don't know what you are talking about.
Quote:
What's the answer to his question anyway? |
How should there be an answer? It depends on how long before the release of the hardware we get a sample to make the adaption. If we get it like two or three months in advance, OS 4 will be available when it comes out. If they pull a SharkPPC, then it will take longer. So how should I answer that?_________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. Write me a mail |
