I've run into an interesting problem:

After a couple of minutes, the A1 locks up. Solid. Even the caps lock key doesn't work.

Basic info:

Installed the final version of OS4.
USB mouse and keyboard (mouse is wireless...)
MicroAmigaOne, base system. Only updated the ROM once so far. UBoot 1.1.1, 750Gx, 256MB RAM.

The only thing connected is a network cable to the router.


There isn't much troubleshooting one can do before it freezes. Does anyone have any clues?

Worked fine before the update.

Check your cooling system. Does it mount default ram?

The machine locks up without running anything. I start the clock so I can watch the second hand, and within a couple of minutes it locks. Does it with YAM, or while playing with the prefs.

It just locks. Under the previous system, it ran fine. (I don't remember if I did update 3, but that shouldn't be an issue.)

OS4 final was installed by booting off a fresh CD and installing it that way. (I backed up the boot drive first...)

Changing screen modes just meant bigger icons, then it would lock again...

Have you put Run >NIL: in front of "C:AddNetInterface QUIET DEVS:NetInterfaces/~(#?.info)" in sys:s/startup-sequence"

That way if you have a network/router connection problem it will not hang youre system.

This sounds like what happened to me. I moved my machine to the kitchen table where I had lots of room to do the install. It was not hooked up to the network. Worked just fine after clean install. Moved the machine back to its normal location, hooked up the network cable, powered on, system came up to the Workbench screen and mouse and keyboard locked up after a couple minutes. Power off/on same. At first I thought it was the KVM switch. Then I unplugged my network cable and the system booted up and worked fine (no network of course).

Note, all my computers are hooked up to my router which has built-in ADSL modem. Access ISP over ADSL. All the computers use DHCP (dynamic).

Here are the steps I followed:

1) Edit Startup-Sequence and change C:AddNetInterface command to
Run >NIL: C:AddNetInterface QUIET DEVS:NetInterfaces/~(#?.info)

2) Setup the internet prefs (I didn't use the internet wizard, so I don't know if it works).
- Interfaces ... in my case dynamic configuration (DHCP)

3) Even though I am using DHCP, I eventually found that I had to configure Default Gateway Address and DNS server address to find my router.
Some router manufacturers use 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1
My router uses 192.168.1.254
- Routes ... I had to add a Default Gateway Address for my router
- Name Resolution ... I had to add a Domain Name System server address for my router


*** Important note regarding step 3 ***

When I was running OS4 Update 4, I did not have to specify the Default Gateway Address or DNS server address because the system and router seemed to be able to figure that out without my intervention.

So, I just did steps 1 and 2 and booted up into a pitch black (workbench?) screen instead of the normal Workbench screen. Reboot using ctrl alt alt and it came up fine into the normal Workbench screen. Shownetstatus command revealed that the system had by this time discovered Default gateway address and DNS servers.

So, I added them manually into the config as in step 3 and everything has been fine since.

I found step 1 pretty much solved my problem. Instead of doing your step 3 I setup my machine with a fixed address and the problem went away as well.

Something is wrong with Roadshow and/or DHCP. These are just workarounds that we should not have to do.

Any devs out there?

After going over my network settings, I agree that

Run >NIL: C:AddNetInterface QUIET DEVS:NetInterfaces/~(#?.info)

fixed my problem. Now I have a feeling that I did it last, instead of first.

As long as I use DHCP, I do not need to define default gateway or DNS server, in fact, I can even delete the following files and the system still comes up ok:
DEVS:Internet/routes
DEVS:Internet/name_resolution

Network status is populated about 3 seconds after Workbench screen appears.

Local host address = 192.168.1.65 (on interface 'interface')
Default gateway address = 192.168.1.254

My machine is a MicroA1 with 750GX CPU.
My router is a high speed 2wire model 2700HG "Residential Gateway" router (for Telus TV service).
My wired computers are connected to a SMC105DT EZ switch, which is connected to the router.
The router also provides wireless access (ok for laptop and PSP).

If I insert my old Linksys router in between the SMC switch and my MicroA1, the MicroA1 takes less time to negotiate IP addresses (I changed the IP address of the Linksys router to 192.168.2.1 so it wouldn't interfere with the main router):

I tried some things including turning on Debug in the interface file. Turning on Debug fixes the problem as well so it didn't provide any useful information.

I'm trying to dig up an old hub so I can use a sniffer on my network. Unfortunately all I have is switches which doesn't allow me to see all of the traffic.
