True, I suppose. Dammit. I just want a new Amiga.

Amiga OS is tied up in BS, AROS doesn't have any apps yet, and I can't get hold of MorphOS at the moment.

Bah. At least I have my classics and UAE.

@all

Hmmm...
Bolton Peck said of the year 2000 regarding classic:

Quote:
When I got there in 2000, Bill McEwen told us all that 'Classic is dead. There's no money there at all in that market.

Bill McEwen said of the year 2000 presumably regarding classic:
Quote:
Amiga set forth in 2000 with plans of forever changing computing and the landscape by creating a series of products that would guide us through the launch and creation of a new operating system that we could all be proud of. A portion of the Amiga operational budget came from the sale of the existing Amiga hardware and operations and we expected those revenues to help us stretch the initial funding so that we had time to properly get to the second round of funding for Amiga which was always planned.

Quote:
Think of my surprise when I learned that all of our inventory was sold for $75,000.00 to a company in India, when we were generating more than that on a monthly basis. This created a big operational hole for the company and caused us great harm in our ability to move forward. This hardware was not even put up for bid or auction, and nobody was consulted in the process.

Err...I suppose there would be no money in that market since someone sold all the inventory for 5 cents on the dollar (or less).

@cgutjahr

Do we know why the three aforementioned negotiations didn't pan out.

I don't remember the AHT Europe (two years ago), but at the time ACK look oh so promising, then there's ACube (who can say).

We could do with knowing AInc stance on the whole, we need information not just rumours.

That's as a good a summary as any. Hell, even I am getting fed up with this silent treatment and lack of official h/w-partners, and I don't actually want aos4.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here.
The disagreement has been going on during all that time and could surely have come into play with all the projects you mention.

I remember Tronman being called a liar , as well as some unrepeatable names, when he first told his story. Times sure have changed. Hope he gets his money.

Apparently, they are willing to license OS4 - why else would they negotiate with different parties, for several years now?

So rejecting every company or individual that has asked them for a license since 2001 somehow translates to "they are willing to license OS4"?

Is thou insane?

More like those individuals concerned are keeping their mouths shut.

They should be ashamed, but I very much doubt some of them are.

Exactly.

Yes, but the poster I replied to said they "won't license OS4 until the they come to an arrangement with Hyperion". IMHO, the available evidence suggests otherwise:

If they wouldn't want to issue licenses at all (until disagreements with Hyperion are solved), they would not enter negotiations with other parties. If AInc are not interested, they'll ignore you.

It's probably just a question of how much money you're willing to spend.

As evidenced by their complete lack of negotiation regarding, or even presentation of, Amithlon. Yep, convincing argument you make there....

I think this is quite true, what were they going to do, make an Amiga 700 running AmigaOS 3.9.1 ? The Classic community did not represent a potent market; they (classic owners) wouldn't make an incremental upgrade, unless the cost was negligible. AInc had to go for something new, at least PPC based or similar. Staying in the hardware market was another risk altogether so targeting only the OS was a perfectly sensible move.

What did they do they ? They ended up outsourcing the OS leaving them with... nothing. And the market they were targeting were the very same classic owners who they wanted to disregard. It's madness to think that they would have attracted a whole new class of users to Amiga, tempt them away from their bland Windows or shiny MacOS.

Amiga Inc are irrelevant now. Here are some fairly straightforward predictions:
1. AROS will continue to improve, slowly. It will reach a turning point if/when emulation for 68k/PPC and classic API allows it to run classic software with no changes. There will always be hardware for AROS.
2. MorphOS will continue to improve. Pegasos's (Pegasii ?) will continue to be produced. If Genesi disappear (and it is a volatile world as we know, one bad decision could spell the end), MOS team members will target other hardware or drift away to other things. EFIKA means that Genesi should be around for a bit longer though.
3. AmigaOS 4..... hmmmm, if Hyperion don't manage to find hardware that will run it or find a way out of their licence agreement with AI soon, then OS4 will be in very dire straits.

Makes me realize that what I think a lot of us want and what Amiga Inc. and maybe even people like Bill Buck want are 2 totally different things and that is "Amiga Everywhere" (yes even Bill Buck as he wants the Amiga name someday so his products can be labled Amiga too, but that's a whole nother topic)

I don't want Amiga on hundreds of millions of desktops. It never was. That will just lead to viruses and spyware and all the crap the Windows has to deal with.

Part of what made Amiga unique was that we were small -- and I consider even a million users small, but even if we were a community of 100,000 someday that would great too.

This is all conjector... This is what a plan WOULD HAVE--COULD look like:
But if we could control the hardware, and I don't mean "custom hardware" that is expensive, but just 'Amiga' hardware. Something that Hyperion would program for that would be cheap. Maybe Hyperion could choose a small form factor x64 board to port Amiga OS to. One Board, One Chipset, Less than $100. There are 100s to choose from. Why would we choose any other route? We certainly can't afford any other way?

No one wants to look to the future, problably because we've all waited so long now. So many years.

But what comes after we finally (IF we do at all) get some $300/$400 PPC board delivered in the next 2 months that runs at 500mhz or whatever that has 1or 2 pci slots? Then what?

Where do we go from there?

We stay with less than 1000 users with a board like that and then we just never have any software and just die off like we are doing now?

The cheaper the hardware is and the easier it is to get into AmigaOS4, that IS THE ONLY option to get NEW people to try it out. NEW people is the only way to get people interested in and to get people programming for the platform. It's that simple.

no hardware = no programs.

Mr Peck has my sympathy. I've worked for several companies of the same ilk as Amiga. All have lied through their teeth to their employees and pretty much left them to dry up and drop dead whilst management eventually reap some sort of vast financial benefit. I hope he gets his money.

Amiga Inc. are pretty much dead in my eyes. I really hope all goes well for Hyperion and they finally get to reap the rewards of their hard work. Unfortunately they have a big fat tumor called Amiga Inc sitting on their shoulders (a bit like the company I work for at the mo) just waiting for the money to roll in .
