As an ardent fan of the 24 TV show, I'd tape it every Sunday from Sky whilst I was up the pub. Getting back home after a few bevies, I'd rewind the tape (yes, old VHS) and watch the week's exciting episode.

However, disaster struck the other weekend when I missed the penultimate episode, and couldn't for the life of me spot when Sky were rebroadcasting it. A kind friend of mine who is also a fan of the show put it on a CD for me, for he downloads the episodes.

Unfortunately, when trying to view the episode over my girlfriend's house on her Windows XP PC, I was unable to view it. Neither Microsoft's Windows Media Player or Apple's QuickTime would play the AVI file, which was in an H.264 container format. I tried downloading the appropriate codecs, only to discover a complete lack of administrator privileges.

At this point I was nearing tears of frustration, yet there was light at the end of the tunnel. Getting home and putting the disc in my AmigaOne, I started up DvPlayer and dragged the file into the window. Seconds later, Kiefer Sutherland was telling me the time...

Thank you Steffan Felner and all other contributors to this wonderful program. This is a quality piece of software that rightly deserves to be registered by each and every OS4 user, and shows what is possible on the operating system.

@amipal

Probably you had an older QuickTime version. DvPlayer is very nice i agree, a must have for every OS4 user.

@amipal

Thanks for the feedback!

Although I've been pretty quiet about it lately, development is ongoing. I did put a hint of what's to come in the screenshots section of the dvplayer webpage.

You didn't try VLC ?

Agree that DVplayer is mature now, and a software that can compete with even VLC.

I considered installing VLC or MPlayer, but since I didn't have any luck installing plugins for the other two media programs due to lack of admin rights, I just gave up in a huff!

Agreed. I also have to say that DvPlayer is the most stable piece of software I have on my AmigaOne. I've never had a crash or freeze due to it. It really stands out as an example to all who develop for OS4, or any other operating system at that!

@amipal

Yes wmv playback already works with sound, I just have to add index handling (to allow seeking) and a/v sync. I also started looking at the Flash Video (FLV) format, it looks pretty simple, much simpler than asf/wmv so I think that will be next after wmv is finished because that format is becoming more and more popular.

@R-TEAM

Thank Chip (Csaba Simon) for h.264, etc., he is responsible for avcodec.library which contains the codecs.

And of course let's not forget those gentlemen who work on those codecs, without their work minotiry platforms like ours would have no chance to catch up with today's multimedia requirements.

Do we dare hope for the ability of streaming wmv and flv files from an internet source (and perhaps an IBrowse plugin)?

DvPlayer r0xx0rs and is well worth the reg money!
Keep up the good work Cobra and Chip et al.

@Monoxyde

Having wmv and flv videos play from disk is the first step. After that I should implement the ability to download videos directly from a URL and play it while it's downloading. Implementing a streaming protocol could come after that, however if someone would write an I/O plugin for some streaming protocols, that would speed things up, the SDK for it is available

FRIGGIN' AWESOME!!! I had _NO_ idea DVPlayer was so A D V A N C E D!
That's a real winner of a product! I'm so shocked and impressed!
Oh man, I really want an OS4 box now! DTS, 6 speaker, WMV, DVD... Delicious!
I'd pay DOUBLE what you're asking for it, if I had a new Amiga!

@COBRA

I love DvPlayer, the only thing that irritates me is that it leaves a small black window in the middle of the WB if it can't play a video. I have to re-boot to get rid of it.

Looking forward to being able to play more codecs.

@sundown

Sounds strange, if it can't play a file, it should just display an error message. Can you email me a small video which can reproduce your problem?

@COBRA

The error message says "File is not recognised as a supported movie format" & a black box is behind the error window, the same size as the DvPlayer gui. I have a torrent avi that I stopped right after I started downloading it so it's corrupt & shows the problem for me. I'll send you a screen grab of my WB that shows the problem & the corrupt avi file for you to try.

Edit: e-mail sent

@COBRA

Seeing all those recent threads about how good DVPlayer is and all. I decided to test the OEM version that came with my OS4 final in order to see if I should add it to my "to register" list
My French ISP (Free) provides me with a hardware (Freebox) that enables me to access Internet (of course), to phone (i.e. just plug my home phone on the freebox and I can phone via VOIP), and look TV via ADSL if I hook my TV on the box called FreeboxHD. This latter hardware embeds an HD which can be used to record TV progams. Thoses recordings can then be accessed via a builtin FTP server to get them back to the computer.
I tried to play one of those files, but of course as they are of great quality they have a huge size, the file I tried was almost 2GB. Problem I have is that I can't view it (nor even know if DVPlayer supports the format used : ts) because it seems DVplayer wants to read most of the file before even starting playing, I waited many seconds (minutes?) with DVPlayer eating 50% of my CPU before I choosed to reboot (what invalidated my partition BTW, but that's another strange thing).
So I have the impression DVPlayer try to read most of the file before even starting to play it (MPlayer reads it, even if it spend some loading time at startup, it finally launches it fine after 3-5 secs).
Is it a limitation/bug in the OEM version that comes with OS4 Final ?

EDIT: many typos... should reread before submitting
