| In an active AmigaWorld.net discussion thread, the notion of creating an Amiga community totally independent of commercial forces is expressed. Although the thread may be viewed as strictly retorical, it does raise the question about just how creative today's Amiga users are. In this week's AmigaWorld.net Sunday Poll, you are kindly obliged to answer whether or not you have ever made any software and/or hardware contributions to the Amiga platform at large. _________________ That'll Put Marzipan In Your Pie Plate, Bingo 💻 Pro-Amiga, 🌍 Pro-Globalism, 🍅 Pro-Vegan, 🛦 Pro-NATO & 🇪🇺 Pro-Joint EU Defense Intervention Initiative |

I obviously can not vote for others, but submit this for your reference, since he will likely not be posting:
http://www.ianstedman.co.uk/Amiga/amiga.html
Also Chris is a member here, so:
http://www.e3b.de/usb
And Jens: http://www.jschoenfeld.de
Doubt Ron would post, so: http://www.aht-international.com Let's call that one AHT and related
All the above fall into 5+ category one way or another.
You can add Dennis Van Weeren (Minimig). He comes to irc, but I doubt he'll respond here on AW.

Pehaps it would be a good idea in these dead times for coders to post WORKING examples, say; how to use system librarys and devices etc ( fully commented of course )
This would help novice programmers to get up to speed quickly.
Not bother with simple C stuff like "Hello World" because this can be learned from any C book.
Pref OS3.xx with OS4 option ( because 99% people have OS3.xx and OS4 is not alvailable to the masses yet)

Well, yes, but your question leads to more questions. By "contribute", do you mean anything, or only works that are contributed to the public domain? Most of my work on the Amiga is free, but I have also developed a commercial app that will never be seen or heard by the community "at large". That involved embedding an A1000 (!) in a factory as an advanced machine controller. Only a few of the operators even knew it was an Amiga. I have also developed some hardware that is free to MIDI users at large, on any platform. I did the development on the Amiga, but it's now out there "in the wild" where any Windows,Mac, Linux, Amiga, or Atari ST fan can use it. Finally, the work I'm probably best known for I didn't write at all. I maintain CAMD.library, which was ported by Davy from AROS code written by Kjetil. So it's hard to even claim credit there. I've been switching off between three "new" projects just this weekend, but unless I think it's useful to others, most will never leave my computer. I mean, how many others would want to set up automatic watering of their vegetable garden using OS4? So I answer YES, but without any numbers. Depends on what you're asking for.

I thinking something similar.
As someone who read the spectrum magazines of years ago I found it very easy to learn and understand code from following examples.
What would be ideal would be a compilation book of listings show you examples like creating a simple GUI based mp3 player using mpega.library, a simple paint program, a little app that could load a 3D object viewer that kind of thing.

Not all of the Amiga users are in position to contribute something back to the platform they use. The majority of the Amiga users are simply that - users. They play games, wield with programs - old and new, draw some pictures or track some mod for own enjoyment, read some Amiga sites, and just enjoy the platform. The only contribution they ever made to the platform was when they bought their Amiga. They make impact for the platform only if they surf the web with their Amiga, on the website logs, which almost nobody reads anyway. But that doesn't mean that these users are irrelevant. In fact these users are the most important part of the community, since as I already said, they are the majority of the Amiga users, and only they can make any serious buy/use of new hardware/software released. _________________ Games, programs, reviews |

I'm on that list but I only made an icon. I'd like to do something a bit more useful. |

I've created the following:
tunenet-docky.lha - small docky for TuneNet
amipal-mi.lha - album covers in 32x32 and 64x64 sizes as drawer icons
mediarequestor.lha - handy window to assign using AllKeys to run different audio/graphics tools
vbamuigui.lha - simple GUI for VisualBoyAdvance emulator
Sure, none of these are compiled code, but they provide something for all Amiga users. Though I have started learning C, I'm no where close to producing anything useful, so find things like rxMUI serve a purpose. _________________ After a decade away from the scene, I am back! |

yes so am I

This list is a little misinformaing for doing ports of other 'alien' software is faster than creating your own software. But its more satafying doing your own, atlest I think so.
And you get the best fealing when you see or hear that other people use your code.
Take for example my Screen blankers that I modified to run under OS4. Some 6 months ago I was at a small party and I did see all the AmigeOne there was present was running mine blankers.. that made me fell really good :D
