Need feedback on ffmpegGUI - New V1.0 released!

Just completed and uploaded, to OS4Depot, an initial attempt at writing a GUI for the ffmpeg video manipulation program. Currently it supports some basic settings but allows command line options to be added to make it useful for the power user as well.

I have several ideas for further enhancements but I decided to release this early version to get some feedback on what users would like to see added. So here is your chance!

I'm no video/audio expert so I need your advice!

What additional features would you most want and use?
Are there additional or different selections that would be useful for the features already implemented?

Here are some ideas that I have for additional features.

Adding a "VCD/DVD" section to make creating VCD/DVD ready file eaisly.
Adding a "Presets" sections for easy "2 click" creation of files to run on various deviced such as iPods, cell phones, mp3 payers, etc.
Adding a "Advanced Video" section to allow padding and cropping of video.
Saving and restoring settings to and from a file.

@ktadd

Thanks for the effort, I have been waiting for a GUI for FFMPEG/MEncoder for a long time. I don't have here my A1 atm unfortunately, but I'll take a look at it when I get it back repaired from ACube.

@ktadd

It would also be good if you could get it to do a 1 click import for ipod/psp etc, using the "Presets" option, straight from DVD.

Regards

Mark

@ktadd

Tis GUI is WHAT I've been waiting for since a loooong time. I really want to thank you for this program.

All is working perfectly and I can convert my enourmous MOV file from my cam to AVI with only one mouse click.

Very great

Thanks again.

I would LOVE that feature. Me and sundown tried creating playable dvds out of mpeg clips etc, but we were unsuccessful.

Unfortunatly all is not quite working perfectly. I just found and fixed a bug where if you use the tooltype CMD_PATH to tell ffmpegGUI where to find ffmpeg, the "Infile File Info" gadget cannot find the ffmpeg program.

Everything else works though, as far as I know.

If this feature is important to you then you need to put ffmpeg in the same directory as the ffmpegGUI program. I've already fixed the bug and it will be included in the next release. Sorry!

@all

Thanks for the great feedback so far. I am considering all inputs and will have comments at a later date. Right now it's 3:00am here so I guess I should get to bed.

Ah, a progress bar would be great too

Concerning the path, I just put FFmpeg in the drawer where stands FFMpeggui.

This section could be useful, although I don't know what geatuures ffmpeg has.

Recently I have taken some 'movies' on my didgital camera which are in .avi format, and to get a better closeup etc, I had turned the camera 90 degrees so the movies are on their side. Which is great when viewed on the camera, but the pits when viewed on a TV, or a computer. I wanted to rotate them, and I had to try and do this on my laptop, on an OS I don't like and with programs I didn't know. I had to uncompress the file, rotate it and then compress it again.

If ffmeg is capable of rotating video in this way, but it would be very useful to do it in all in one program.

Unfortunatly I don't believe ffmpeg has the capability to rotate video or pictures. I could be wrong though as I'm not expert and ffmpeg has a lot of features I don't understand yet. If anyone else knows a way speak-up!

Is there any other Amiga cli program that rotates videos? If yes, then it would be possible to support rotation from the GUI by calling that program.

The only other way I can think of to do it, and it's very painful, is to use ffmpeg to strip the audio track, save the individual frames as pictures, use some other program to rotate the individual pictures, then use ffmpeg to turn the pictures back into a movie and add the audio back in. It might take a while to process all that though as there is likely to be a LOT of individual frames unless your video's are really short.

If your intrested in attempting such a such a thing, see the Hints & Tips section of the ffmpegGUI.guide file. You can try it out on a small section of the video.

I thought about that as well. Unfortunatly since all I'm doing is starting up ffmpeg I have no way to determine how much progress is being made. I thought about capturing ffmpegs shell out put and trying to use that but I didn't see anything in the shell output that I could use to indicate how close to being done it might be. If anyone has any ideas on this I'm all ears as I would like to implement a progress bar.

Yep, that's the workaround until the next version is realeased.

Hmmmm....this is likely the next feature I'll take a look at as I would like to be able to do this as well. I've already looked at some information on how to do it but that doesn't mean there isn't a problem with this version of ffmpeg that keeps it from working. I'll have to do soem experimentation.

So, you want to RIP DVD's do you.
This isn't something I endorse on copyrighted material so do it at your own risk. (I have to say that.)

Having said that I have thought about this feature a bit as one of my son's has an ipod and the other has a PSP, oh ya, one also has a DVD video camera. I think the biggest issue here is if our version of ffmpeg includes the proper video codec. I think the PSP requires one that we don't currently have.

If the guy who compiled ffmpeg is listening, how about compiling a version that links to some external libraries, if that's possible on the Amiga, to include more codec's?

using dynamic libraries will be possible when the SDK update is out.
The guy who compiled FFMPEG is AFXGroup i believe ;)

From: I'm actually flying into a bug!

An idea about scaling videos:

If the input video has a width not divisible by 16, make some non-obtrusive notice (not a new window) about this. Scaling might be equipped with width, height, keep aspect and a button to round the width to be divisible by 16. Doesn't matter much what it is called since it should have a bubble help or documentation entry.

Yes, you can scale these in mplayer too but that's not ideal.

Where do those videos come from? Think HDTV, 1440/4 = 360, doesn't necessarily work with mplayer video layer, although SDL output is okay.

Just uploaded a new verion of ffmpegGUI v0.7. Sorry but I just had to fix the CDM_PATH bug and while I was at it I added a new feature. See below.

Version 0.7
Re-arranged gadgets on Video and Audio Tabs to make Codec the first gadget.

Fixed bug where the "Input File Info" feature could not find ffmpeg if the CMD_PATH tooltype was used.

Added a "Clip Setting" section with a Start Offset and Duration gadget to support clipping portions of a video or audio file.

very small wish: please make the file gadgets editable. Sometimes it's faster to change a file name with keyboard instead of ASL requester.

@Timo

Also, there should be a working list, so that you can put some videos in a row to be converted with the same way.

Maybe you should consider to put the source code in the package as well just as an example for newbies programmers who would like to check this out.

Good work. Keep it that way.

I took a look at changing this but unfortunatly the way the getfile gadgets
work it isn't as easy as allowing entry into the string gadget. In order to
accept input from the string gadget you have to setup a hook function to be
able to get the input. I had a hook function setup at one point in my code
to deal with a pop-up chooser but removed it because it made the code a bit
messy. If anyone knows an eaiser way let me know.

I've found that it's pretty easy to click the getfile button and edit the
filename directly in the string gadget of the file requester. I might still
consider adding this in the future but not at the moment. Sorry.
