Reminds of a day in 1996 when Microsoft bought SoftImage, they later sold it off since they never knew what to do with it.

Caligari, the most expensive piece of software ever sold for the Amiga. Caligari, the funnies tutorial video EVER done, especially since it wasnt supposed to be funny.

@Tigger

I loved Caligari and recently tried to reinstall it on my 4000T but just couldn't get it running properly with the CV64/3D card. What a shame, it's such a cool program.

It must be because we beat Microsoft to the punch on Aladdin 4D.

LOL

Where is the tutorial video you are referring to?

Refer to XNA tool chain.

@DiscreetFX

This is so upsetting to me, you have no idea..........Microsoft also bought Blue Ribbon Sound works at the peak of their Amiga fame (coincidence?) and Bought Out COREL as well just when they were about to strike some sort of deal with Amiga Inc to create Linux for the Amiga or something (Coincidence?)

I must say that I think Microsoft is the smart one here and that Caligari, Blue Ribbon, and COREL are the idiots..............they bowd down to Microsoft, and guess what? who the heck cares about those companies now? I would spend a cent on any of them now.

I dont think I still have a copy. When Caligari Broadcast came out, Roman did a tutorial video, and he doesnt speak very good english and has a very strong accent thats a mixture of Czech and Italian, so some of the things the program can do are illegal in several states in the US as I remember it. I usually tell people to watch it with the Audio OFF.

I think I may still have that video. I can put it on YouTube if I find it.

@scala47

Caligari has not been an Amiga company for a long time. Roman even promised me the source code to the Amiga version of Caligari Broadcast but never delivered. Unless Roman is just looking for a nice exit payday I don't think his company being bought by M$ is good for it long term.

That video was a real hoot!

Another Amiga 3D developer that was (temporarily) owned by Microsoft was Martin Hash's company. Their Amiga software was originally called Animation:Apprentice in 1987 and is now known as Animation:Master for both the PC and OS X. They just recently released version 15 of that software!

Roman's accent was hysterical, but I think Martin's video was even more amateurish. He shot himself in his kitchen and would pause the tape by reaching into his pocket to press the remote trigger.

True enough, they were a legend at the time, but the finacials were a different story. Blue Ribbon's offices were here in my town and as a Bar&Pipes fan I spoke with them serveral times. At the time of the MS buyout, the Amiga market was colapsing, BR's sales and income were falling and MS made an offer not only of cash but of new employment for BR's developers. At least a couple of them went to work for MS developing the windows version of Music Construction Set and later, audio portions of DirectX. It was a sad unwelcome end, but when you have to feed the family, counting on the Commodore market at that time would have been the choice of the real idiot.

As a footnote, It was the effort of one of the BR folks at MS that finally brough the Bar&Pipes source code to open source so that it could live on. Now maintained by Alfred Faust.

Back around the time when Microsoft released the abomination known as Bob. The Amiga program had morphed into Will Vinton's Playmation for Windows. I'm not sure if MS actually owned Hash, Inc., but Martin Hash went to work for Microsoft during that time. I'm probably wrong, but I always assumed that Hash and co. came up with the animated paperclip, wizard and search dog that most users Windows users have come to hate.

He and Microsoft parted ways when they bought Softimage, which was later unloaded to Avid.

[EDIT] I googled around and I think my chronology may be incorrect. Bob was released in '95 and MS bought Softimage in '94. Hash released the first Playmation in '92, so he might have joined Microsoft at the time of the Softimage purchase.

@Thread

In an interview 15 years ago or so Bill Gates said that his goal in life was world domination. I wonder if that is not coming true soon.

@Niolator

That time is so long gone now...

Google is now the company best-poised for "world domination."
