@elwood

Thanks to your hint I used mount -w /dev and was finally able to completely upgrade to feisty. Next I plan to upgrade to gutsy which I believe is the latest version available for PPC.

No because the Ubuntu file is not a CD so you can't boot it directly.
I suggest you wait for the LiveCD ACube is working on. It will be much easier to install.

Any further word on that LiveCD from ACube?

In the part of the Crux installation where you are downloading the kernel image, couldn't 'wget' be used for that?

Just curious. I don't even own a SAM board.

@Valiant

Sorry for the delay. I would like to have notifications when someone post a message....

ACube focused now on Debian. We would need someone to work on a Ubuntu CD :-/

@RacerX

Just use any software you want to download the kernel.

@gerograph

Same question like you. waiting to have debian on SAM to receive my SAM

on same HD, impossible. Need to wait after a new uboot, available in a couple of weeks, as previously posted by m3x on a post, on this forum, somewhere.

see this post on amigans: Debian / Dual boot on Sam 440EP

@elwood

I'm verry happy that Acube is focused on Debian on SAM with AOS4.1 on same HD (IMHO, not have the real information).

@elwood

Personnal informations about his point are welcomed

Thanx for infos...

thats bad news, because we thought about buying 3 SAMs in a PSILE case for our company (sitting in the entrance area and showing AVI or Hollywood presentations, as well as Internet for our customers. Mainly OWB is not in the state where Internetbrowsing suits our needs, we wanted to back up with a linux browser as well and replace by OWB later

@elwood:
Any news on the LiveCD for ubuntu ?
How do I get into the ACube FTP server (anonymous is not allowed) ?
Can you update your article to directly install ubuntu 8.10 ?

Unfortunately I cant boot of the ubuntu LiveCD (Desktop 8.04 ppc) because the CD-ROM seems to not recognize the CD (I tried a CD-RW).

Is is possible to copy ubuntu files to an USB stick and to boot it directly for installation ?
How do I do it ?

As far as I know, Ubuntu Team dropped PPC Support from V 6.something onwards. Fedora 10 works though, and I am just installing Debian...

But, hey I am not a Linux Expert at all, so donnot count on me...

I did put Debian on a seperate HD. Just to see if it worked. It does.

I did not put Parthnope on my first (amiga) HD so to boot Deb I have to switch cables.
I was not to happy that the kernel did not have modules. I hope Acube at least
releases a config file for (whatever) kernel.

No, it does not.

I have to mount it as root. Then look at it with the file browser by selecting
>File System >cdrom. That is if I mount it as - - mount /dev/scd0 /cdrom

@Mechanic

So, stay tuned on this one

AW.net - Thread

Normally it should mount fully automatically, as root mount command works, as user not... BUT: If you use the panel mount plugin from the Xfce4 DesktopEnvironment you can mount CD Rom as User... strange...

But I donnot know anything about Linux, expect the things "Geri" told me, so I have to relay on him...

thanx Geri...

@gerograph

Or, before you change too much in your configuration files (and screw things up),, try this.

~$ man sudoers

Read for awhile then;

~$ su root
(your password)
: visudo

Now go down the file until you see
root ALL=(ALL) ALL

And add another line just below that one.
alo ALL=(ALL) ALL

That is it. Now save the file (Exit), yes.

Now you have THE POWER. Be careful. When you understand more about Sudoers you can
change this file to allow users to do only some things, and limit the amount of time a password is good for.

Now, Right click on the screen and select Create Launcher.

'TYPE:' 'Application in Terminal'
'Name:' MountCD
'Command:' sudo mount /dev/scd0 /cdrom

You can click on the icon and pick a different one.
Click 'OK'

You should now have a MountCD icon on the desktop. Put a CD in the drive, wait for the light to
stop blinking, and double click the new icon. Open a file browser and see if it worked. You can
also create a cdrom folder in your /home directory and mount it there. Just Trash any icons that
are not useful anymore.

One more Launcher, to UMOUNT the CD.

Same as first one, only name 'UmountCD', and command will be - sudo umount /cdrom

Or do the xfce thingy.

@Mechanic

so, this means I as "alo" have the same rights as "root" has ? If so, why don' t I log in as root directly (always) ?
Plus yes doesn`t realy solve the problem, still no automount. So if I understood right, I think its better to use the Xfce panel mount thing... it is always a workaround, isn't it ? I am using Xfce anyway especially because of the window manager.

But thanks for help anyway so now I know what sudoers is about. What about discussing the CD Rom thing in the thread mentioned above ? Might get a bit messy otherwise..

see ya

@Thread

I added this note on my tutorial about setting up Xwindow with different video outputs:

If you use a DVI or HDMI (i.e. digital) output, you should comment out a line in the xorg configuration file, or the X server won't start. To do so, edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and comment out this line:
Option "ConnectorTable" "64,2,1,2,60,1,1,1"

Note: You must NOT comment out this line if you use a monitor thought the DVI->VGA adapter (analog output).

Thanks to Giuseppe Coviello for the information.
