| Hi,
here I am again... made up a new thread for my CD ROM problem on SAM440 and Debian (Gnome or XFCE).
In my other thread about mounting a AmigaPartition I wrote:
Quote:
Still have the CD Problem though.... fstab: /dev/scd0/ /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 ro,user, noauto, hide 0 0 can only mount as root, when using mount command from shell... not even an Icon (just a alway a ghosted one).. |
Only if I mount the CD Rom manually as root, it will be available after the next log in as user. ???
Geri answered:
Quote:
That's normally a permission problem. GNOME has a nice preferences program for this called "Benutzer und Gruppen" under "Systemverwaltung" were you can edit the membership of your user for the "cdrom" group. |
O.k. I checked that, in the "Benutzer und Gruppen" (User+Groups) Dialogoue a can tick something like "Use CD Rom drives" (Properties Dialouge for an user)
I allowed that for user and root, but still no automount, an CD can not be mounted manually by a user. I also checked "Gruppen verwalten" (manage groups) but I cannot find a "cdrom" group. How do I create one, they ask for a number ??
Thanx for infos
@Geri have a look here http://cruxppc.sunsite.dk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=957#957 I think thats the same you concluded, isn't it ?

You don't need to add root to the cdrom group. It already is almighty! Can you please post /etc/fstab, /etc/groups and the output of "ls -l /dev/s*"?

Yes, he talks about hardware graphics acceleration.

It looks like glxinfo was executed on a Pegsos2 here (at least the hostname implies that). I guess glxinfo should report "direct rendering: No" on your Sam440ep, right?

Morning,
O.k. here we go:
Quote:
FSTAB
# /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/sda3 / ext2 errors=remount-ro 0 1 /dev/sda2 none swap sw 0 0 /dev/sda7 /media/AmigaXChange ext2 rw,users 0 1 /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

Did not find /etc/groups, but I have this:

yes there are:

Do I have to worry about this one/what does it mean ?

Here is the rest of the kernel log, which deals with sii3114.ide Controller and CD Rom things:

I don't think that's something you have to worry about, because you can still mount a disc as root.
But wait a minute: Quote:

no difference, I can manually mount as root, if I try as user from shell it says: mount can only be done by root
How come, or is it normal, that under "Benutzer und Gruppen" -> "Gruppen verwalten" the user "alo" does not belong to the group "users" nor to its own group "alo" (same for user "test" see screenshot).
How come that, If I log in as root, I have to manually mount CD Rom, shouldn't it be automounted ?, and already available ?
This is somehow strange...

Okay, set it back to "user". The problem must be somewhere else.

That looks like XCFE has a bug! Your user "alo" is both a member of "alo" and "users", if you take a look at your /etc/group file.

Okay, can you check, if the XCFE volume manager is enabled (see Enabling Auto-mount)? For GNOME you could check, if gnome-volume-manager is installed (with the Synaptic package manager)._________________ A1SE: G3@600MHz, 2GB, 1GBit network card A1XE: G4@933MHz, 2GB, refitted AC'97 codec microA1: G3@800MHz, 1GB

very strange, I just installed a xfce mount panel plugin, and I can mount CD ROM as user easily, once I have logged in. But cannot use mount cli command (s.pics). If I mount CD via mount panel plugin or as root via mount cli command. I can access CD Rom only via the folder /media/cdrom0. Cannot access via "Arbeitsplatz" (see Screenshot) neither an Icon comes up, like it would do with my USB Sticks.....
.... O.k. checked for gnome-volume-manager and xfce volume manager. The Gnome one was already installed the Xfce one not, I installed that one to with apt-get install as well. I checked preferences which looked alright. But doesn`t make a difference at all.
Any ideas ??

How does GNOME behave? Does it show the CDROM icon under "Computer"?

Strange! The Etch installation on my x86 machine shows the correct group settings. Sounds like something went horribly wrong during the installation. What Debian version actually comes with the Sam440EP? Etch (4.0) or Lenny?

Doesn't really matter wether Xfce or Gnome. Cannot see CD Rom under Gnome as well. If I open "Computer" Icon in Gnome I see exactly the same as on the screenshot posted above (so only a sort of "ghosted" CD Rom Icon).
It's Debian Lenny on the SAM440EP. And I donnot think something went wrong during installation (not from my point at least), because I reinstalled Debian about 3 times from the scratch.

I have to check how my Lenny installation behaves. But ATM I don't have a clue what the problem could be. It would be worth to check the bug tracking database of the Debian project._________________ A1SE: G3@600MHz, 2GB, 1GBit network card A1XE: G4@933MHz, 2GB, refitted AC'97 codec microA1: G3@800MHz, 1GB
