I just bought an A1 and found the firmware was very old.
Then I downloaded u-boot 1.1.1 from http://www.hyperion-entertainment.biz:8080/

CDROM was successfully loaded after power on.
I executed 'diskboot 500000 0:0' then 'bootm'
2-3 seconds later the system automatically restarted.

See the err screenshot

Can anybody help?

Thanks

@dahdao

Bootm is for loading Linux isn't it? Boota is for AmigaOS, or are you trying to load Linux?

Oh hang on, you've not managed to update the Bios yet? Oh, err.. sorry can't remember it's been so long since I did it? Could be a faulty disc/burn?

Edited again to add, what IDE cable do you have your CD drive on? 0:0 will (if my memory is correct) will boot from the master of the first channel

try 0:1 ??

Holy cow, 0.1.1 is really ancient. I am not even sure that the update works with that. My guess is that it doesn't.

Where did you buy it from? If it is a dealer, then he might be able to send you a replacement ROM.

If not, things might get complicated. Can you boot OS 4 on it? If yes, you might want to try BIOSUpdater.

@Stephen_Robinson

I re-burned disc and it failed all the same.

Don't know if the filed downloaded from http://www.hyperion-entertainment.biz:8080/ is the correct one for my A1.
The file name is A1Firmware_ISO_06-Oct-2004.zip

The image seems to be okay, the header says "Firmware Updater". I rather think that the firmware is too old for this updater.

@Rogue

I got it from a friend so I don't know who's the dealer.

I haven't try OS4 boot. According to some online document u-boot need to be upgraded to 1.0.0 or later for OS4 installation.
Anyway I will try and see if I can use BIOSupdate in OS4.

But if that doesn't work, the situation will be egg vs. chicken.

Thanks

@Rogue

A step by step upgrade should work, no?

from 0.1.1 to the following version and so on.
Don't recall the version numbers, but recall there was like 2-3 updates before version 1.1.1.

Actually having looked at you picture again it's finding the image ok, so that's not the problem.

Both are 1.1.1
One is ISO for CD boot and the other is image for floppy or network(TFTP) boot.

At least you still have a UBoot! I remember that UBoot couldn't be directly flashed to the current version. We had to update from one to another. So at one stage some might have needed to do two in a row. If you have it, you might need to look inside the OS4 updates to find older UBoots to gradually update from.

In the case of acquiring OS4 and/or firmware 2nd hand, I would advise you to contact Rogue direcly thru email and describe your case. Check his profile for contact info.

Added quote from HJF from last year, which is the latest I can locate regarding this policy:

Quote:
If you want to transfer the ownership of your OS 4, send me an email. To make things easier, please include:

- The serial number of the OS 4 copy you want to transfer
- The username of the person that has the copy registered NOW
- The username of the person that should receive the copy

If the above does not fit your exact situation, then just describe as accurately as you can what your situation is.

Here's one reason why...
You can actually type in a valid nick and password on Hyperion's site (which should make all the firmware and OS4 updates "visible" and available to you) but...
If the ownership is still under another person's name, you won't see these files even though the nick/password might seem to be accepted.

I went over this last night with someone else in a similar position and confirmed what he saw with each click step-by-step. If YOU have entered a nick/password and don't see the March, 2005 uboot listing under "downloads/amigaone firmware", then this might be the case.
In fact, you won't even see an entry for OS4 files if you are not truly registered.

Wasn't there some kind of problem with the original ROM chip that it couldn't be re-written? I remember replacing the ROM chip in my A1 way back when. I think this was the reason.

Would that fit the symptoms he has?

Intuitionbase has description on how to replace the ROM.

http://www.intuitionbase.com/static.php?section=rom_puller

You need to get ROM from some where, but thats an other problem.

Some of the early firmware were write protected.
Talk to your local Amiga Dealer for a chip should cost you under a tenner

@dahdao

I have found the info sheet that Sven Harvey sent to me when he returned the UBoot ROM chip in Oct/Nov 2004 and I quote:-

Please find enclosed your AmigaOne ROM chip. Please note that the chip returned to may not, in fact be the original chip sent to me, as in some cases the flashROMS fail upon erasure. The chip enclosed has, however, been fully verified and is now user-reflashable, using an appropriate boot floppy or CD-ROM

End quote.

If your UBoot is an original one as fitted by Eyetech it could well be that it is not user-reflashable and the only solution is to buy a new one from an Amiga dealer.
Have checked my version although it is v1.1.1 it has a date of March 3 2005 and if I recall this was a slightly updated version that I was able to reflash myself. This is availale from Hyperion if you are registered as an AmigaOne owner, but if you cannot reflash yourself, as stated you will have to buy an up to date ROM

If you need a replacement ROM, I have the equipment here and spare ROMs.
