Is there a "Ultimate SAM&AOS4.1 Hints & Tricks" web page somewhere ?

I've installed AOS4.1 and SAM boots nicely. Next thing to solve is the loss of USB device that happens every now and then. Usually keyboard "drops off" after SAM stands idle for some time. When I disconnect and reconnect, it comes back but mouse drops off ....

USB has apparently been improved since OS4.1 beta for Sam was done. So when they release non-beta version of OS4.1 for Sam, USB will hopefully be much better...

Perhaps I should try to get in the Betatester group/lists because I definitely feel like betatester when I use SAM with AOS4.1beta...

(currently I have about one night per week for Amiga hobby, at this rate my SAM becomes a fun machine ... in a few months? I've "waited" PPC Amiga for ten years, so ... most likely I manage with it.)

It seems that I do something wrong in the internet settings...

btw, does SAM support 10mbit at all? Only 100mbit?

x86 linux boxes work in my home LAN by just plugging them in
settings are given by the router & DHCP
But it does not seem to work with roadshow & SAM...
What do I need to do?

UPDATE: I remembered that I had also 100Mbit switch waiting to be taken in use.
It works! So it seems that SAM is 100Mbit only?

now writing from my SAM ... fastest web browsing I've ever done???

more info: My 10Mbit hub was a "Target" 8-port hub, from about 1998 or so (and it seems incompatible with SAM) and the new is A-link 10/100 8-port switch and it works perfectly with SAM.

btw. USB status is the same, USB stack works as long as I keep the kingston connected, otherwise USB mouse& keybord is dropped off soon.

@KimmoK

Yes, it is a known fact, that the SAM is not able (or mostly not able) to switch "down" to 10MBit - most people will never know, 'cos nowadays most home networks (router, switches, dsl connects) already work with 100MBit. I have a 10MBit home network - except my windows machines all my old stuff (Amigas, RiscPC, SUN Workstations...) are only 10MBit. I use a dedicated switch for my which does the the downshift to 10MBit for my SAM - works perfect.

@cha05e90

I don't think that's right. The 10/100 selection is performed by the hardware controller and the Sam doesn't care what speed the hardware is running.

Currently (while my Sam is in this room) it runs at 10 MBit through a hub, but if I plug it in to another socket it connects directly to the 100 MBit router.

At both speeds it runs flawlessly and you can't tell the difference. Well, actually, I can see the light is yellow, not green, so that means it's running at 10 MBit, not 100.

@tonyw
I found that an ancient 10Mbit hub did not allow my Sam440 to work, but I assumed it was some other incompatibility like (maybe) Sam440 drivers not supporting half-duplex or something.

EDIT: This was apparently fixed by the Quick Fix.

This is why i said "mostly" - i don't know wether it's a hardware or software issue, but there are several people out there (incl. myself) who have problems operating the SAM in a 10MBit enviroment. Using a own 100MBit switch with the SAM is usually the stable "workaround".

I wonder if this is caused by the screenblanker ?.

I have a problem where the screen blanks and I can not get any response from the computer.
I have turned off the screenblanker to see if it happens without it.

@Spectre660

On my SAM it happens regardless of the screen saver.
But with a kingston USB memory stick in port2, USB works 100%.

Update:
It seems that kingston stick "helps" also when it's in (either one of) the J19 -port.

@all

Again: Is there a "Ultimate SAM&AOS4.1 Hints & Tricks" web page somewhere ?

And is there a manual for AOS4.1 somewhere? (not just quick guide)

Is the AOS3.9 manual the latest & best there is?

I find the learning curve a bit steep when I've not used Amigas for a few years....

@KimmoK

There is document directory in volume sys:

you can find even more documents in the SDK: if you think about starting to program.
Anyway the I have the old AmigaDOS manual for 1.3 handy, book form is always nice.
And don't forget http://www.intuitionbase.com/

@KimmoK
I'm not aware of any proper manual for OS4, that covers basic usage. My A500 came with a simple guide to Workbench, aimed at true beginners. I'm not sure if there has ever been an official beginners guide after that! But as OS4 operates very similar to OS3.x, any guide you can find for that should be fine.

Something for me todo:
"The QuickFix works great, BUT only when you enable the Debug Kernel"

FIX:
"Doing this in the Shell:
Rename Sys:Kickstart/kernel Sys:Kickstart/kernel-REAL
Copy Sys:Kickstart/kernel.debug Sys:Kickstart/kernel

And then doing a hard reset. Your Quick Fixed Sam should now be pretty stable!"

Better fix:
"Just open the file SYS:Kickstart/Kicklayout in Notepad and change the line "MODULE Kickstart/kernel" to "MODULE Kickstart/kernel.debug", then save and do a cold reboot (ctrl-alt-alt)."

(source: http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic_id=29712&forum=2&start=60&viewmode=flat&order=0 )

But the danger is that I end up playing with the MacMini... argh... I must resist, because my SAM is most likely the only SAM to be shown in next club meeting (against several bluebutterflyminis.... ).

While we are on the subject of tips an tricks... How do I change the background and font color of the CLI? I don't know if it's possible with the stock one, I know I could do that with VINCED and KingCON, but never figured out how to do it with the stock.

@RuDeE

You can change the color by sending ESC code sequences to the terminal, this ESC code sequences can be put in S:SHELL-STARTUP

The ASCII ESC code sequences are described in the OS4 SDK (I think), if you have some old utility disk or demos for Amiga1200/500 that does this, then just check the DF0:S/Startup-sequence.

Hopefully that will make a Mac Mini easier to resist . Although I'm really looking forward to the next OS4.1 update, which has a lot of improvements.
