AmigaOne repair people

Hi

Can anyone point me in the direction of people who may be able to take a look at my AmigaOne XE as it is in need of repair.

As I'm in New Zealand there doesn't appear to be anyone handy with whom I can swap CPU modules etc so I'm forced to look overseas.

Got no idea what is wrong with it so even a diagnosis would be handy so I can make the decision whether to repair or let her go

Thanks

How do you know it's a CPU problem? I've had various problems over the years; none CPU related. The A1-XE has a lot of connections.
1) start with a fresh good battery.
2) if the video screen is still black then:
the video card may need a cleaner connection
the UBoot chip may need a cleaner connection
3) if your not sure about what I just said, then I recommend 'Amiga Repair Center', France. JJ does good work.

@Snuffy

Thanks Snuffy but I've tried everything on the common to-do list and still came up blank. There is nothing at all coming out of the serial port (9600 or 115200/8/N/1/OFF). I'm not sure at all it it's the CPU or the motherboard but the CPU is easiest to remove and swap and gives me an idea of whether it is the CPU or motherboard that is the problem.

My monitor recognises that something is coming out of the port as the display on my monitor changes from 'Check cable' to 'No signal'. I've replaced the battery, battery holder (old one was getting wobbly) and booted the system with nothing connected except a NULL modem cable and the motherboard power...still nothing.

I'll send one of the two places mentioned an email to see what repair costs are likely to be

Thanks both of you

@dangermouse

That the spirit. Don't give up.

I'm in the same spot. A1 won't show a uboot screen. I too have tried all the items on the list.

I ready to replace the battery holder next.
If that doesn't work....(sigh)

The France thing is too expensive for me.

BTW, I emailed Acube to see if they could test and fix just the cpu, but they are no longer offering this service.

Good luck,
Michael

@dangermouse

I also asked Acube about their A1/OS4 products...

So, they offered me info on buying a 4xxflex board or system.

I'm thinking about it.

I also thought it might work to have amigakit be a middleman for the france thing.
As I don't speak French. The mailing address on the web site has either changed or is not up to date. And that makes me even more nervous.

Michael

i will look into Amigaone fix`s next year after iv completed my Blizzard PPC/Bvision Cyberstorm PPC/CyberVision modifications.

my Blizzard PPC/Bvision is completed and below is the new standard config.

Blizzard PPC 060@70Mhz 603e@320Mhz ( 80Mhz bus ) Bvision @100Mhz.

work on the Cyberstorm PPC will begin early next year maybe i will look into Amigaone at the same time.

note this does not include Extreme Overclocking which i do have a Blizzard PPC card which is faster than above. there is also a new world record for the Bvision Overclocked over 100Mhz and should work also on the Cybervision but has never been tested.

I don't know if you have already tried the following:

- loose DIMM connector: boot while pressing on the DIMM module, clean the module contacts, move the module to the second connector, try another DIMM module
- use another PSU
- unplug the CPU board, chek the Megarray connector for any bent pin, then plug it back

First of all AmigaCenter services are not cheap... In fact they are very expensive. I myself had used their services little more than two months ago, so I can tell you my own experience.
AmigaCenter was very friendly and warmed me many times CPU reflow *is* a risky task that can completely and irremediably destroy the CPU module.

I decided to go on anyway, I sent him my nude mobo *and* the CPU module (prefer removing it from the mobo to prevent destroy during transport), he successfully did the reflow and tested it during 3 days then sent it back to me after payment. Between sending broken A1XE and reception of repaired "only" three weeks happened (and that was because I had to go to post office to get my packet back).

I was very happy !!! .... Until 15 days ago when my A1 got the same symptoms again and decided to stop working again.... *I* *think* the soldering didn't last because of the cooling system my CPU has (original one never modified) is too heavy and presents some vibrations.

Now AmigaCenter does not want to try again the reflow too risky this time, and I was left with no Amiga OS 4 machine.
I tried to contact retronix France (it seems a subsidiary exists) but didn't get any answer to my email after two weeks. Tuesday I emailed them again with a copy to someone from the main site (U.K) to see if it changes. To this moment I got no answer neither from the French subsidiary nor from the main site

Well Paul at Amisynth in Melbourne is happy to look at my AmigaOne so fingers crossed the outcome is favourable. He's also looking at my PPC-less CSPPC so, if I get really lucky, I'll get both fixed.

Cheers to all who replied and thanks again for the hookup ajs!

@Johan

Thank you, I finally had an answer from them.

Now I'm considering organizing an effort to group A1 CPU reparations first from France or nearest countries, so if anyone is interest let me know.

Replace the battery first, and then try a different PSU.

If that does not help connect a null modem cable to Serial (RS232) port, if you don't get any text from serial port then your CPU is most likely dead.
(use putty or hyper-terminal to display the text.)

If you do get text, then I suggest you look for problems whit RAM or Graphic card or PSU.

Kurt Grach at Revanche LLC in New York does A1 board repairs. (I just read recently someone refer to him as a place which still does the work.) I had him do the USB and DMA fixes on my XE a couple years ago. Still a lot of miles of shipment all the way from Sacramento, but at least it's still in the USA.

@Paul

I recommend Revanche, LLC (Kurt Grach) for A1 motherboard/CPU repair. However, if you have a big CPU heatsink/fan, you might consider disconnecting it before shipping. My heatsink fell off during return shipping, ruining the CPU module. I am now saving money for a 7457 rework. You will want to contact Revanche first to verify if they still do motherboard/CPU repair.
