Hello.

I really liked KingCONs features(mainly, a scrolling CLI!!!). So far, after installing OS4.1s latest updates, I haven't installed KingCON, for fear of conflicts.

What's the word here about this?

@BrandonLee

I can't live without KingCon even under AmigaOS 4.1. It runs smoothly without the slightest problem from the first time I installed AmigaOS 4.1. Try to find the latest version of KingCon, which is 1.8 (from AmiKit) or 40.4 (Aminet) and not the previous one from Aminet too (1.3).

@danwood

I haven't read about problems. I just thought that, since there is no version on OS4Depot, it wouldn't be "compatible".
I haven't spent much time thinking about it until today. My spare time has been short, but today I decided to complie a few things and really missed KingCON. ;)

@BrandonLee

I use KingCON v1.8 as a console program for my ARexx scripts (mainly because of the scrolling feature). Works fine with AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2.

I use ViNCed with OS4 because it has lots of features/options and a very flexible auto-complete function.

Is that the same VinCed that I had with OS 3.9? I tried it with an OS4 prerelease and it crashed. I switched to KingCON and have been using that ever since. To be honest, ViNCed has so many features and options that I like the simpler KingCON better. Some of us are easily confused

@AlexC

Now this is what OS4 should have had in the beginning! Even if I prefered KC and the sunshine shell.

Sorry that was bad even if I kept it up there.

Unfortunately OS4 wasn't the replacement for OS3.9. It was the follow up but it lacks many of OS3.9's features. And other OS features.

The shell is just one of those things brought back to OS3.1 style on OS4.0.

@all

Hard to believe after all these years AmigaOS still doesn't have a CLI with a scroll bar as standard! Tabs would be nice too :o

*patiently waiting for SAM 460 to arrive*

@Xenic

Yes I'm using ViNCed 3.91 from OS3.9, both VNC: for the shell, and VNR: for raw output, to have a scrollback buffer.

I can't remember how it behaved with the pre-release but I've been using it all along.

@djrikki

I think the problem is that KingCON is just too good

A replacement console has been in the works for ages, but I suspect since KingCON is a great workaround for the crappy default one, other features and bugfixes keep getting prioritized over it. Hyperion is a fairly small crew after all.

@djrikki

Well we got one with OS3.9 but since OS4.0 doesn't inherit OS3.9 we miss out. It has tab completion though. That can be handy on a bare shell system.

@Hypex

Yep, it's a shame, but in reality OS4.0 was based on 3.1, not 3.9, and so while a lot of the features were re-implemented, many (like the inclusion of ViNCEd) were skipped. Since ViNCEd was a separate addition to OS3.9 I suspect it might have been a licensing issue which prevented it being included as a contribution. I miss it myself, but not enough to have tried to bring it across from my 3.9 machine. Maybe I'll try it tonight...

Maybe they could offically add KingCON to the OS.

@BrandonLee

Both KingCon and ViNCed were third-party contributions, binary only. To add either to the OS would require full sources, permission to modify them for the latest API, etc, etc. Such permission may have been sought, I don't know, but we certainly don't have the sources.

KingCon only replaces the con-handler and uses the existing console features. Many of its features are now included in the new console and some in the new con-handler (which work as a pair). You can still use the old KingCon (handler) with the new console, but it's hampered by not knowing about the new console features and can't use them.

I tried ViNCed once back in the old 3.5 days but I thought it was awful and I've never tried it since.
